Highly recommended...get one
Wow...I'd read some unfavorable reviews...but really...you must have gotten a bad copy. This is a great sharpener...just like the one I used in grade school...although, the name is different. It has two cutters that are razor sharp, and it only takes seconds to sharpen a pencil to a nice point. The wooden part of the pencil is nicely shaved...and smooth to the touch. Whats not to like. I purchase this one after my decades old electric pencil sharpener failed. It was purchased for the grandkids...and they love it too. I mounted it in the garage, so it's out of the way and yet easily accessible. It's so sharp that you need to be careful of over sharpening. Today's pencils sometimes have the lead slightly off center...and it that's the case, the sharpener may not stop when the pencil is sharp. The pencil lead just does't hit the back of the sharpening mechanism and it will keep going. A little practice and you'll be very happy that you purchased one of these finely crafted pencil sharpeners.

This is awesome. Yes
This is awesome. Yes, it is not heavy metal like the old days but thank goodness. Those things were HEAVY! However, the blades are just as good. My suction is a bit off. It works but if you put this on say a granite counter top, it will work itself loose. Like it is too slick to stay on very long. Attach this to wood instead. I sharpened 40 colored pencils and 10 regular #2. Right away I got a blister though on my finger. lol. I only mention that so if you are a teacher and need to sit down to do this, you will want yo cover the black rigid piece on end of handle or put a guard on your finger. That piece on handle is a stiff rubber, not soft. As far as it sharpening "uneven." Nope. First of all, it sharpened all 40 of my pencils flawlessly. A few regular pencils didnt come out so well for two reasons. Lead and wood on pencil was not even/centered. Also, most of us familiar with these sharpened know that the pencil goes in and with a bit if pressure dead center of blades. You hold pencil and sharpen. Once you feel the blades begin to loosen their grip or spin "around the pencil, it is done sharpening. If you press down on pencil, almost bending it, inadvertently applying pressure to one side of pencil, it will sharpen uneven and keep grinding it away. If you keep sharpening and sharpening, your lead is not centered to begin with.

It really is perfect
Electric and battery powered sharpeners bother me because you have to depend on one more thing that isn't necessary. Nothing beats a good manual sharpener and the feeling of controlling the process rather than letting the machine decide. There's something very tactile and rewarding about holding the pencil and feeling when the blades tell you it's sharp. Love the sharp chrome finish. Love even more the ability to mount it under a countertop so it's both highly accessible and out of the way. Yes, I mounted this to the "ceiling" and the shavings chamber flips the other way just fine.

I love this thing!!
I am really loving this pencil sharpener. I was so sick of automatic pencil sharpeners breaking down after a half year of home use (which isn't that much). This pencil sharpener seems to be heavy duty and I am hoping it will hold up for a good long time- especially since it is manual and there is no motor or electronics to break down. My 6 year old finds it easy to use and she also thinks it is fun enough to as if she can sharpen an entire package of pencils. I am pretty sure that after the pencils reach a certain sharpness, they stop sharpening more, as all the pencils are about the same sharpened length. I also like that it has different hole sizes, although I imagine that I personally, wont use them other than the pencils. I wish I would have bought this last year instead of spending nearly $50 on automatic pencil sharpeners that killed over after hardly any use. This automatic sharpener is so less frustrating and does such a better job!

Don't hesitate!
Exceeds my expectations. When I ordered this sharpener I didn't get my hopes up, I just wanted a sharpener that was better than the piece of crap electric one I wasted my money on. I wanted one that worked like the old school classroom sharpener. Well I got what I wished for. Some reviewers said the metal is thin and cheap. Yes, the main body that encases the "insides" along with the shavings is not made of cast iron. It is thin metal, but to me that is not a big deal because it doesn't actually do anything. The sharpening apparatus is quality, and sharpens every pencil wonderfully. I haven't had a single problem with this device. I mounted it to the under side of an upper cabinet and it is very sturdy. Overall I am very happy with this purchase (especially for the price!) and am happy to have sharp pencils again. :)

The BEST pencil sharpener that actually sharpens the RIGHT way!
It is critical that you have a working reliable and high-end pencil sharpener if you are going to use pencils in any regularity at all. After wasting money and time not to mention damaging Prismacolor pencils on a crappy Prismacolor pencil sharpener (the irony!), I decided to invest in a pencil sharpener that reminds me of fond memories of days long gone. This pencil sharpener WORKS and I'm already crazy about it. I sharpened over 20 pencils yesterday. It didn't mess up once. The pencils which the previous sharpeners had broken sharpened just fine, and I used a variety of different pencils. You can adjust the size by switching to the right knob up front. It is important to install this somewhere on a wall or a desk or a flat surface where it doesn't move. That is key to having success with this model. Also, your finger may get red and tired from sharpening 20+ pencils at a time (yes, I know, I'm an overachiever!) so watch out. BEST pencil sharpener I could ask for. Now I have everything I need to continue with the coloring business :)!

I decided to go old school and found this guy that vacuum mounts and it works great! It suctions right now onto any smooth
I got sick of using hand sharpeners and I've never purchased an electric sharpener that's lasted more than a few months. I decided to go old school and found this guy that vacuum mounts and it works great! It suctions right now onto any smooth, hard surface, and lets go when you release the handle. Sometimes it sticks a bit beyond that, but you rarely have to coax it up. The thing sharpens like a chainsaw. You can sharpen anywhere from kinda sharp to extra stabby. Do exercise restraint because if you just grind away, the pencil will be so sharp it breaks as soon as you start writing. Even sharpens those cheap-o holiday pencils the kids get from their friends at Christmas and Valentines Day. And, supervise kids around it, because one of my twins ground three pencils down to mere nubs in literally less than two minutes while I was busy helping her sister with homework. They love to use it, but I find it's better if I help them or stand close by so they don't just keep sharpening.

How to get a good sharpen ...
It's been a few months using this and it works just great. I see what people mean about the lopsided pencil sharpening and I think I figured it out.... If you HOLD the pencil while sharpening it is lopsided. If you just place the pencil in the hole and don't "hold it in one place" then the sharpener works best... the pencil will rotate and sharpen evenly on each side. I guess it should come with directions explaining this as instinctively I wanted to hold the pencil in place while sharpening.

works great
A lot of folks saying this sharpens only one side. Did you folks never run into this at school? Twist the pencil as you sharpen and it won't happen. Sharpening one side is common on this style sharpener. Twisting the pencil allows the teeth to cut evenly all the way around the tip.

Saw this and just HAD to purchase!
I wear many hats...and one of them is a homeschool teacher to my son. I saw this "old-school" pencil sharpener and my school memories came flooding back (they are good ones). I ordered it for our schoolroom and mounted it to the wall. (Hardware is included for drywall, but I recommend mounting into a stud with 2" screws. The screws that came with it were too short to reach the stud). My son was very intrigued by this "archaic device". Yes, he nearly got grounded for that statement. But now he prefers it to the electric sharpener. He says it's fun and it sharpens more evenly. If I had known he would truly think it was archaic, I would've buried it and let him find it on a dig! That would've been priceless! Happy purchasing!
