Paid for itself on its first use!

Cheap, but it works. It helped me find my keys buried in 2 feet of snow this winter (don't ask), so I'd say it more than paid for itself on its first use! I've also lent it to friends to pick up lost nails in the yard, and a wedding band - both said it worked great. The headphones it comes with are trash, but you don't need them anyway, and if you want to use headphones, any headphones will work. This definitely won't hold up to a ton of abuse, but if you or a child is interested in metal detecting, this would be a great way to give it a shot without being out a lot of money. While I was looking for my keys, it was picking up the rebar in our driveway through 2 feet of snow, and on bare ground it was picking up metal that I know is at least a foot deep, so it seems to work just fine for amateur use!

Lightweight, easy to use, works as advertised, quite addictive!

I purchased this for my 10 year old, treasure seeking son for Christmas. Due to our lack of more than a few inches of snow this year we were able to get it outside the day after Christmas. Easy to use, basic and there is no question when it finds something it likes. It's taken us to a depth of about 8 inches beneath packed soil so far with no trouble. That particular find was a disinigrating metal bucket. None of our finds have been lucrative, but curious nonetheless and it's gotten my son and I out in the cold 3 times in the 5 days he's had it. I MAY be more excited about it than he is. So far we've combed a lake beach under 3 inches of snow using a bread sack closed with a twist tie over the detector, small portions of our yard and the ditch along our street. Even when we just end up finding a rusty nail, hearing that beep and digging our way towards a mystery object is quite fun and a bit addictive. My mind is already searching for other locations to check. As far as comfort and ease of use I'd rate high. Its lightweight and while my son did say his arm began to hurt after awhile, it was just fine for me. The arm brace eliminates wrist strain. The extendable body has quite a range and adjusts well for adults or kids. I typically don't write reviews until I've had something for awhile, but I haven't had this much fun with something I bought online for quite awhile. It may not do anything fancy like decipher between types of metals with precision but, for a 10 year old, I consider it a great buy. When asking my son to stay out a little longer today to hunt for treasure he said, "Mom, you're acting like more of a kid than me." I reminded him there is no age limit on this device!

Works to find lost arrows

I bought this metal detector to help me find arrows lost while target shooting. If you've ever shot arrows at a target, you know what I mean. They can sneak themselves in just under the grass and disappear in an instant. The box was much smaller than I expected. No big deal - you just have to put it together, takes all of 5 minutes. I took it outside, turned it on, and began to sweep the ground. SUCCESS! After just a minute or two, I found the arrow I was looking for. Flush with my newfound skills as an arrow hunter, I decided to try and locate any other arrows that I know I've lost in the same area over the years. SUCCESS AGAIN! After just a few minutes of sweeping the ground, I found an arrow that I know went missing last year. I know there are more out there, and maybe I will get around to sweeping the whole area. For now, I am more than happy with this metal detector. It has earned a permanent home and is kept right next to my bows.

so we were pretty disheartened by the time this guy arrived

We bought this solely to find my engagement ring which had slipped off while I was waving goodbye to a friend in my driveway. Since it happened at night, I couldn't see where it landed. My husband and I spent two days searching the heavy grass and large bushes nearby in the freezing cold without any real success, so we were pretty disheartened by the time this guy arrived. But, less than 30 minutes after we took this out to the yard, we found my ring. I can't speak to its use in anything else, but it served its purpose for us very quickly. I am very happy with this purchase.

Enjoying it!

So far, I love it. I am brand new to metal detecting and a friend said one in this price range is good for what I wanted. Follow the directions in the short book to learn the difference in tones. I am loving it. Found a hot rock...which is cool for me because I love neat rocks.

Very nice detector

Took it out for a test the first day I had it. I didn't have high hopes considering the price, but I will say I was very impressed. I used it in the yard first to get an idea as to the effectiveness of the unit. I found several pieces of wire around 6 inches down. Afted that I tried it near an old home site in the woods (in the pouring rain). I found that the tones are very different with different types of metal. I had alot of fun and found an old quarter about 3 to 5 inches under the ground. I highly recomend this to anyone considering trying metal detecting its very affordable and easy to use.

Bang for the buck!!!!!

I never write reviews, but I have to say how much I am pleased. What a great beginner metal detector for the money. I utilized this on the beach in dense and soft sand ranging from 1.5-8" What to expect: It not to come in the box you would expect to see on the shelf (see picture). It not to come with two 9-volt batteries (not included). The batteries will A small shovel and dirt strainer (make sure you order one so you get all of them at the same time, you will need it). Water (personal hydration); I must have walked 5 miles before I even knew it. First item found was a large fishing hook about 1.5 inches down in soft sand (this is why you use a small shovel to dig). All other items were found 4-8" down in denser more packed sand. I didn't get to "tune" in the trash setting so I can't comment. I will update once I have time to play with it. The feel/quality and grip feels a bit plasticy...but again, you have to have some expectation with the great price. Head phones are a bit cheap feeling as well, but I used a set I had laying around and they plugged right it. Bang for the buck is right here. Creates a great first time experience for the newbie. Already looking forward to the next level.

So good, I bought it twice!

Written by my husband: A few weeks ago, I lost my titanium wedding ring while playing in the leaves with my daughter. I purchased this item to find it. However, before it arrived my wife spotted the ring - so I returned it. Fast-forward one week later, I lost yet another metal item - this time the cross from my necklace in the sand! I looked for 45 minutes and could not find it. I repurchased this metal detector and, after some practice finding 4 hair clips, 3 paper clips, a long nail, a screw, an aluminum can, and 51 cents, I eventually came across a small blip that turned out to be my cross! Also, for reference, this can detect titanium - so this would have found my wedding ring too had I needed it. Highly recommended if you need to find something precious that you lost, and need to do so cheaply.

Great beginner detector

We are having so much fun digging up junk! We have done our yard, and have hit the beach a few times. WE haven't used the headphones due to ripping them out of our ears everytime we bend down but they work good if you need them. Battery life is pretty impressive, its been weeks and still going strong.

The miracle on ice... well the miracle on snow.

Friends and I were playing in the snow because in Texas it is rare to have snow. My friend lost her phone in the snow and it was only later that any of us realized it. I having just gotten this metal detector drove home and was able to find the phone after about thirty minutes of looking. Without this detector she would have lost hundreds of dollars, instead she lost about 40 cents worth of rice. Great product and a good end to what would have otherwise been a couple hundred dollar mistake.
