Just what I needed.
I bought this hammer primarily for splitting wood and driving grounding rods. Because of some surgery, I can't swing a splitting maul any more without risking a hernia. My three pound blacksmith's hammer just doesn't have enough power to drive a wedge. This one works great and splits hard oak without getting it started with the chainsaw. It's one-piece so the head won't loosen and if you overshoot what you're hitting you're not likely to break the handle. It's a bit heavy for drilling but you can choke up on the handle for more control. For splitting wood the extra weight makes it much easier.

Thor wishes he had this hammer...
This hammer is nigh unto perfection when it comes to drilling hammers. As a drilling hammer, this hammer shines brightest when pounding chisels, stakes, or very large punches, but it is also great for demolition and, to a lesser extent, metalworking. At 4 pounds, the head of this hammer hits like a mini sledge, and the longer handle means you get more power at the sacrifice of accuracy. I have used this hammer in shaping metal, although it really isn't designed to be a blacksmith's hammer due among other things to the fact that the handle is not a consistent size and shape throughout so you can't comfortably grip it up closer to the head. The grip is very tacky, oil resistant, and durable, and I will probably replace it with leather once it wears off (after ten years). The full metal shank means that it will probably take three lifetimes'-worth of overstrikes to break the head off, and I'll be happy to leave that job up to my grandchildren. I haven't had any trouble with the head being too soft, and will update this review if I do. Overall, this has been a fantastic hammer so far and it has been well worth paying twice as much as I would have for one with a fiberglass handle.

I would give it 6-7 stars if I could.
I just took it for a rock hounding trip with our rock hounding club this past weekend. It was the hammer of choice. All the other hounders, found some reason to borrow it. It busted a lot of rock and pounded some big chisels. It does take a stout arm to swing it. It's probably too heavy for most women and a few men. I busted my 2 wooden handled hammers last year and was not going to have it happen again. This was one of my best purchases in the past few years.

Excellent mid sized 4lb sledge.
Excellent Drilling Crack Hammer, with typical Estwing high quality. No glued on head for me! Purchased their 3lb version which is the smaller handle, works great. Then saw this 4lb long handle and had to have one. Glad that I did. Also purchased the Estwing Big Blue Engineers 48oz sledge. That is also long handle, feels like 4lbs incl handle and has smaller head for tighter applications. Ended up with all 3, to nice to use! They look awesome lined up by size. Ended up also buying the $17 Stanley 3lb for using in the shop (Amazon). It is a nice 3lb for the price. The Estwings are all 1 piece of stock where other brands use the glued on head.

Great Hammer
I've had the same Estwing mini sledge my whole life and have always wanted one with a longer handle. This is it and it lived up to my expetion. No need to worry for anything breaking but what you're swinging at and that's the way any hammer should be. This weight is still comfortable for one hand use but you can double down with two and really hit something. Works amazing for removing rotors in one hit almost every time and the handle deadens most of the impact on your hands.

Fantastic rock cracker!
This thing is a beast of a hammer for its size. Its a good balance of handle length and head weight. If you’re a rockhound like me who enjoys cracking hard rock to look for amethyst in pegmatite vugs, and needs to hike with their tools, this is a good choice for you.

Awesome!
Bought this to complement my Kindling Cracker for firewood splitting! Has been excellent and now has gotten me to start a small collection of Estwing products because they are solid and will last you forever. Buy once, not twice or more! Also cool made in Rockford, Illinois my old hometown!

Worth every penny.
I bought this as a gift for a family friend who's a mechanic. He has very large hands and had had a long handle 2 pound hammer. He was having trouble when trying to get certain bolts out of a truck he was working on. He loves this. He's used it on almost a daily basis. He says the handle is easier on his hands and he gets a better swing because it's short and heavy.

Estwing, never broken one, and I've had many ...
Estwing, never broken one, and I've had many styles of hammers and mallets from Estwing in the past 30 years. Still made in the USA. A little more pricey than most retail store 'house brands' but you'll own it forever and leave these to your kids.

It's a great medium weight all one piece hammer.
I use it for breaking up fire wood. I have several devices for splitting wood and I use the hammer to pound the splitting devices into logs.
