I enjoy minimalistic designs

I enjoy minimalistic designs, and this can opener is exactly that. It's less bulky and complicated than your standard can opener while doing a better job at what it does. It hangs onto the can just like any other can opener would, but cuts into the side instead of the top while creating a dull edge that won't easily slice into your finger. It also releases more easily since you simply turn in the opposite direction to let go. It also doesn't drench the blade, so cleaning it is much easier and you could feasibly reuse it many times without having to give it a wipe. I don't remember if it's dishwasher safe (probably not) but you shouldn't really need to throw it into the dishwasher ever. Just hand wash it with soap and water, rinse, and dry in less than a minute when it needs cleaning, and I suspect it's far less likely to rust with its simple design. This was really handy when having to reach into a can of fruit and contending with the sharp edges that are created when you open a can with the built-in tab. Not only did it dull the edges of the can, but made it easier to reach into. I wouldn't suggest you press your finger along the edge, but I feel your likelihood of cutting yourself on the edges this can opener creates is far less than the alternatives. Definitely worth the $8 price.

Finally, a simple safe cut can opener that works!

The Good Cook Classic Safe Cut Can Opener is a safe cut can opener that actually works! I tried one of these from another manufacturer and always struggled to get lids off of cans. The other one always took a minimum of two revolutions around the can and then the lid was still very difficult to remove. This opener makes a much deeper, more positive cut the first time and the lid is totally free with one lap around the lid. This one does not have the ergonomic flaws that the other one had either. The handle and lever are where you expect them to be for a can opener. I am puzzled by the reviews that say this can opener is hard to turn. I find this one easier to turn than most others, including the conventional cutting wheel style openers. I suspect that if it is hard to turn there are other problems happening. You only need to set this opener on the edge of the can and turn the crank. Just let the opener do the work. No other forces are necessary. If you are trying to torque the opener in an attempt to get a better bite you will likely cause yourself problems in the form of binding the cutting blade or wearing the traction wheel and mechanism unnecessarily.

Finally a can opener I like

This is the first time I've used a can opener that worked like this one. As they say, this does not leave a sharp edge on the can or the lid, which surprised me. Using normal can openers, I've only cut myself a couple times in my life, but it is nice to not need to worry about that anymore. I was disappointed by other can openers because they seem to wear out quickly. I have an old 'butterfly' type can opener that lasted a long time, but I was nervous that it might have been leaving dust-sized metal shavings in my food. I have only been using this 'safe cut' can opener for three months, but it is showing no signs of wearing out. My wife likes that you can use this 'safe cut' can opener on cans that have pull-tabs. She does not like to use the pull tabs because she is afraid of cutting herself on them. This 'safe cut' can opener has worked well on all the cans that I've tried to use it on.

Works well judging from my first use

Just now received the opener. Opened first can. My vote is: buy it. It was smooth going compared to other openers I've used. The top I cut off fits right back on like a lid. The opener is clean, unlike other openers where residue can get on opener. It's been pointed out these wear out after several hundred cans and must be kept dry to keep them sharp. Fine. I'm ready to order another as backup. And anyway, with Prime it was here in less than a day, so can always order another. I'm happy now I lost my other opener.

Great quality can opener that does just what it says it will do!

I purchased this to replace my original Good Cook Safe can opener. I had it for 10 years! This new one arrived and it stands up to the same quality as my original! Very easy to use. Works just as you would expect a can opener to work with the benefit of it leaving behind a safe, non sharp edge on cans! I highly recommend this Good Cook Safe Can Opener. Makes a great gift because of the great quality and affordability. My 4 year old niece has used it.

Excellent Alternative to Traditional Can Openers

This thing is kind of magical. I don't think it makes a completely safe (i.e., non-sharp) edge. It still seems like it might be pretty sharp, but I haven't tested that theory. However, I've opened at least a dozen cans by now and haven't been cut once. Once you figure it out it's a cinch to use. Getting it to lock on is a bit tricky at first because it's not as severe as other can openers. The lock-on and the cut-completion are kind of subtle feeling. Where as other can openers lock on with a tactile snap and give a force feedback jolt when they are done cutting, this guy is much more gentle. Which is fine, but it makes it a little harder to tell, "Is it on?" and "Is it done cutting?" Overall though this guy is pretty sweet. The lack of a clamping mechanism makes it great for saving your hands from having to squeeze the can opener to lock onto the can. With this guy you just line it up and start cranking. It's been absolutely great so far. And it's profile is much smaller than the typical can opener so it fits in the drawer nicely.

Best can opener money can buy!

Absolutely the best can opener I've ever owned. I had this can opener for well over three years, until it started to fail. I replaced it with a new can opener that cost more than 2x the cost of this one (OXO brand) and the more expensive one was terrible! It didn't cut the cans half the time, and the other half it cut me or gave me metal splinters! I threw the expensive one in the trash and am buying another one of these! I thought more expensive would be better, and I was wrong! Never buying a different can opener again.

Can opening made safe and simple

My husband and I love this type of can opener. Our first one was the OXO Good Grips Smooth Edge Can Opener, but as of late it had become a love-hate relationship. It became unreliable -- sometimes it would work as expected yet more often than not we found we were having to go around and around the can a couple of times to get it fully separated. This one is a dream by comparison. Perhaps it's because it's brand new, but I also think the design of this one is less complicated and will likely stand the test of time, and the build quality seems quite nice as well.

Favorite Can Opener Ever

Love this can opener. Compact, no sharp edges, stays clean and works as expected. I prefer these no-edge can openers because you can pop the lid back on to a partially used can and put it in the fridge. We even use it for pull-top cans if we aren't going to use the whole can. Also, those blades that pierce the cans tend to build up gunk over time - despite attempts to wash. You wouldn't want to eat that gunk. Also, nobody knows what's crawling on the lids of cans when they're sitting in a warehouse or sitting in your pantry. That stuff goes right into your food if a lid cut with a traditional opener drops into the can, or even when juices from the can ooze out onto the lid as you are cutting. Yuck.

Oh! I like it!

Works well and is easy to use, once you get used to it. It takes a minute or two figure out how to work it that first time, and for a few times after that, but once you get the hang of it, it is easy to use, and works well. Once you have rotated the cutting edge all the way around the top of the can, just turn the crank handle backward one quarter turn to release the can opener from the can top. The lift of the can top. No sharp edges, but in some cases, you may see some glue that was used to glue the can top to the can. MACJR
