Solid, quality tool at a good price (but kinda stiff)
I bought it to install vinyl floor tile, and will use it to cope crown molding. It feels solid in the hand. The steel pins are small, allowing for accurate reads. But it is kinda stiff. Not a problem for me, but you can't use this tool to profile softer materials. There is no mechanism to adjust the tension (the housing is riveted together). Since I don't foresee ever wanting to profile a soft material, I won't deduct a star, but look elsewhere if this is your intent.

profile gauge use
I'm an architect and involved in the rebuilding of a 130yr old laboratory building. The profile gauge has worked well in cataloging the traditional wood mouldling shapes. It's sturdy, well built and easy to use.

Does exactly what it's supposed to, and well.
I didn't even know a tool like this existed until somebody described it to me and I searched for it on Amazon. It did exactly what it was supposed to. The "teeth" are easy enough to move but not too loose so that it retains the shape you pressed into ti, so you can trace it or bring it to the mill that will make your casing. Saved me from having to ballpark it, now I can make the new casing match exactly the old one that has been in my house for over 100 years :)

If you know what your doing, this is a nice tool. It would be nice if they made it in a longer tho! I finished off my fireplace where the drywall met the rock. Tough to cut the trim to match without something like this.

worked perfectly
knew about this from a catalog years ago and kept it in mind if I ever needed to work with molding, so when my wife and I put in a new pergo floor we used it. Works flawlessly.

Solid tool
I wish there was a longer version but nonetheless I've used this for countless hours. It's really solid and with simple care it does just fine over time and in the tool box.

Once you loosen the pins up it's great!
As it comes out of the box it is quite stiff in its action - so much so that the metal pins can bend - or scratch the object - when trying to profile something. Lubrication didn't help. The tension is supplied by the two brass-colored caps with dimples on the ends that hold the whole assembly together. By CAREFULLY slipping a screwdriver blade under each end cap, both sides, both ends, and prying up a little at a time, you can adjust the tension so that the pins slide more easily. Be careful you don't pop the end caps off, I imagine you'd have a re-assembly mess on your hands... If you get the pins too loose you can just use pliers to press down the brass cap ends again to restore some tightness. But this won't be a problem if you just go slow and easy. Now I can use this tool to profile guitar necks and anything that is delicate or fragile or subject to scratching, without worrying so much about damaging it.

My husband is laying vinyl waterproof laminate flooring in the entire house and this little gadget is worth its weight in gold for making exact cuts around door frames and other things. It really makes the job so much easier.

It's simple to use. Be patient!!!
If you are not forcing this tool it works perfect. Its lighter than it looks and is durable. Reset the tools pins to 100% flat before pressing it to your object . If you do this , it forms well to most shapes.
