Great disposal unit. Very quiet, but you will hear it run. I found it relatively easy to install, by myself, using a jack to raise the unit to connect it to the sink bracket. I was replacing a 1/2 horse InSinkErator unit with this 1 horse unit. NO need to replace the sink fixture; just use the enclosed wrench to disconnect the old unit and easily install this unit. I have NO idea how easy or difficult it would be if you are changing from one manufacturer to InSinkErator. NOTE: You MUST buy the electric cord seperately. Why InSinkErator would sell a garbage disposal without an electric cord is beyond me, but don't forget to order it - and the hose to connect to attach the dishwasher, if you want them connected, or you will be SOL until you do. From someone who is NO MECHANIC, but now feels good about accomplishing this replacement job, I want to encourage you to 'go for it".

I gave this to my wife as a birthday present as a slight joke, because about once a month our old disposer (Badger brand, same as InSinkErator, just lower brand) would clog our pipes and I would need to mess with getting it unclogged. So far we are over a month into this new InSinkErator model, and it works great. This comes with everything you need except a power cord, so be prepared to put one on, not a big deal, but I don't understand why one isn't included. I did need to change out my drain on the bottom of my sink also, as this one connects differently than my old one (both looked nearly identical to me though) How Well It Works Of course you want to know "But how well does it work?" This thing has tons of power, and is really quiet. After I got it installed I had to throw something down it. We had a could spongy apples, so guess what I did? I threw one of those apples down there with the disposer running and water running. This apple was chewed up and gone in a matter of seconds. Great!!! Overall I am very happy with this disposer, and my wife was even excited as a birthday gift. Don't worry, it was followed up with jewelry and other gifts for her birthday also (I'm not crazy).

I researched this heavily, looked at competitors and selected this model as a replacement for a 15 year old Badger 1 model that had rusted and fused the cutting area inside due to lack of use. I was concerned about the Evolution Excel fitting into the confines and plumbing geometry of my situation. The discharge opening is located around 11/16" lower and about 3/4" further away from the center axis which when you look at the two disposers is remarkable because the Evolution appears so much larger. The Badger 1 had a discharge tube which had a very large inside radius which concerned me thinking the new Evolution Excel might come with the same thing. The really good news is the new one has a tiny 1/16" inside tight radius. This allows you to connect your existing plumbing without any modification. The discharge tube sits a little lower but allows you to mount your existing plumbing much higher (where it originally was located) on the new tube because of the small turn radius. The only thing I needed to modify was to shorten the length of this new plastic tube by about 1/2" which I did with a hack saw. Because you can easily rotate the disposer after it is installed and the tighter tubing design, my new Evolution Excel fit beautifully into the existing plumbing geometry. I stuffed a whole bag of old oranges one at a time into it as a first test. I couldn't hear it as it is so quiet but could feel each orange being bounced around a bit. Within 15 seconds the disposer consumed each. The other comments about sound are accurate. You really have to listen to hear it running. The sound level does go up a bit if you remove the circular rubber baffle in the drain. Another really great design element of this disposer over the Badger 1 is the rubber baffle is easily removable for cleaning the underside and eventual replacement. It seats securely and is a very safe design. Easy, clear instructions and product mounting dimensions come shipped and are also available in PDF at the InSinkErator website if you want to check dimensions, etc. prior to purchase. It comes with a heavy, double ended allen wrench, a 90 degree and also a long straight discharge tube and a nice polished fixed stopper with rubber gasket. I am extremely satisfied with the entire experience of this product.

My family's been using In-Sink-Erator disposals for years. My grandfather was so impressed by them that he bought stock in Emerson Electric, the parent company, in the 60's! So when my no-name disposal quit in my new house two years ago, I knew I wanted the best. This disposal is the top of ISE's line and I didn't spend too much time on the decision. I am no pro, and I very much appreciated the professional who came out to install it - my particular sink required an extra-long flange mounting and it's good to know that can be ordered, though a local Home Depot actually had it in stock. The other things you need are plumber's putty and the ability to wire up the cord, but my plumber had it in and working perfectly in an hour. The disposal is vibration-free and super powerful - it grinds up thick beef bones with the same ease as it does a plate of yesterday's veggies. The rotary action auto-reverses itself and, after two years of daily use, I've yet to have to reach for the jam-clearing wrench - it simply doesn't jam no matter what you put down. Every so often I used to have to unscrew the plastic U-trap with my old disposal, and clear it out - potato peels were a particular problem - but not with the Evo Excel. Whatever it's doing, nothing survives to get stuck. There is another model, built for nervous people and homes with children, where you pack the disposal full of food, put a lid on so no hands can possibly enter, and only then will the motor start. Because that exists, I have tried using this disposal that way - just jam all the food down while the disposal's off, then turn it on. You do this with an ordinary disposal it'll stall out and never come on. The Excel whirs to life and just gets cracking on its job. I am a little nervous myself - I don't like poking stuff down the disposal while it's on, even though I've never had a problem doing it - and so this is the main way I use it now. Most unbelievably, the Evolution Excel is super quiet. You can't get the thing to make enough noise to drown out a low conversation. If you have an open floor plan and someone's watching TV in the room next to the kitchen, they won't complain when you turn this on - because they won't hear it. When I first started using it I thought there must be something wrong with it - is it working at all? Can it possibly be grinding this stuff up? I half expected to open it up and find the last month's worth of disposed food lodged inside it. But no, it is working - it's quiet, efficient and bulletproof. The 7 year warranty - well, after some of the stuff I have thrown down this disposal, I gotta say they must not be too worried. This disposal is a tank, it's super quiet, it grinds up everything, and it's good for your pipes and your local landfills. So if you're on the fence, or you just can't believe what you're reading, I want to tell you, yes, it's all that and more! If you want the best for your kitchen the Evo Excel can't be beat!

replacement for an old InSinkErator 1/2 hp Badger which after many years of service started leaking from a crack in the casing. From the picture I thought this one was much smaller than the old one, but it isn't. It's actually a bit wider, but about the same in height and position of the connections. It uses a different L-pipe connection compared to the old unit, but the new pipe which came with the unit (also ships with a straight one) fits perfectly into the existing plumbing position. Also the power cable connection is the very same as in the old one. So all I had to do was disconnect the power cable from the old unit and connect it to the same cabling connections on the new one, untwist the sink connection (it comes with one, though I left the old one in place, so no need to deal with plumber's putty - I also didn't need the power cord or dishwasher connection kit, as the old connections fit perfectly. One small word of caution: to avoid leaking if you don't connect a dishwasher there's a plastic piece covering the opening. This has to be removed if you connect a dishwasher to the InSinkErator - it's clearly described in the manual, but many of us don't like reading manuals - and in this case this could cause some nasty flooding... I think I spent about 10 minutes with the very clear step-by-step instructions, then cut the power, removed the cabling from the old unit and twisted it out, cleaned the rubber gasket and connection, connected the cable to the new unit, hooked the L-pipe into the plumbing and twisted the connection shut. That was another 10 minutes. Easiest swap ever. It's ultra-quiet and powers through anything. I bought it for the anti-jamming and the low noise and thought it pretty expensive. Now that it's in use it exceeds all expectations and I'm glad I went a bit over my initial budget. We plan on remodeling the kitchen 2018 or 2019 and we'll definitely keep this piece - and then I might also switch to the flange that came with it and might use the power cord and dishwasher connection kits I had order with it, yet did not need. Tip: to keep the noise minimal avoid items below your sink to be in direct contact with the unit. The internal parts are acoustically decoupled from the sink mount and drain pipe. This is great engineering and you'll love it. To have the full benefit, keep any objects from touching it as that might allow any engine and grinding noise to travel to your sink or kitchen furniture and become audible.

I bought this to replace a InSinkErator Evolution Compact model which failed after 6 years, and that replaced a Whirlpool model (that came with our new house) that failed after 5 years. I came to the conclusion that the plumber who did our construction did not slope the effluent pipe sufficiently, which led to standing water in the disposals all the time, and early failure. So with this installation I re-plumbed the whole sink so now there is a good 3/4" slope, and for good measure decided to go with the top-of-the-line model as well. Primarily this was because of the higher horsepower and stainless steel grinding components, but this beauty has many other benefits that make it more than worth the price. As others have noted, it is quiet. One of the quietest disposals I have ever heard. It is incredibly powerful too. It grinds up and through anything, no problem. IMO one of the best features on this disposal is not even advertised by InSinkErator, you have to look into the disposal (while running) to even see it: it auto-reverses on every run! This is an excellent feature because if something is not grinding really well or gets "hung up" you just turn the disposal off, wait for it to come to a complete stop, then turn it back on. Each cycle it turns CW, then CCW, the CW, etc. without any input from you, so grinds are always complete and very thorough. It's only been in 4 months now, so cannot comment on long-term durability, but I expect this one to run a long time.

Bought this from Lowe's because I needed for install that morning. A word of caution when buying InSinkErator from Lowe's... InSinkErator is relabeling the Excel as the Prestige for "Lowe's only" sales at the same price as the Excel. I called InSinkErator customer service and asked them to explain the difference. They said that the Excel will remain as their high end disposal unit and the only material difference is due to the Prestige lacking the jam sensor. Unfortunately this information is not explicit on their web page. I bought one of the last remaining Excel units from Lowe's and they honored Amazon's price. It looks like Home Depot is doing the same thing and calling it the Evolution Supreme SS. To clarify, this is the description of what is missing in the Prestige: Jam-Sensor Circuit™ The Jam-Sensor Circuit senses when a jam is imminent and engages, increasing rotational torque 500% while simultaneously pulsing 60 times per second. It also produces a powerful hammering effect that breaks through the toughest jams before you even notice a problem. I highly recommend the InSinkErator Excel unit for as it quiet and known for being the black hole of home use disposal units. I do not recommend buying the Prestige unit because of the lack of feature at the same price as the Excel.

Bit the bullet and bought the top of the line model. And we are so happy we did! It has been a few months now, and here is what we think: Install was easy. It is heavy, but I just propped it up on some scrap wood (you could use a little stack of books) so I didn't have to try and hold it up while attaching it to the sink. It is hilariously quiet... but it IS a garbage disposal, so it is NOT silent! I think some people might have expected some kind of miracle. If you COMPARE it with OTHER disposals (the one we replaced was an InSinkErator two notches lower in the lineup) this one is SUPER QUIET. But does it work well? If you can't be bothered throwing away scraps you will love this thing because it seems to devour everything under the sun. We love it! TIP: Do NOT buy this from a big-box store. Inexplicably, the name is the same, but the functionality is very different. This unit has an "auto-reverse" feature that is MISSING from the version sold in hardware stores. Every time you turn it on, the direction of rotation changes. This keeps the unit nice and crystal clean. The hardware-store version only spins in one direction... which may or may not be a deal breaker, but if you want the TOP OF THE LINE, this is the ultimate model that you want.

About six years ago I installed an InSinkErator Badger 5 in my kitchen. It worked OK for the first few years but started failing in year three. The problem was that it wouldn't grind certain items enough and they'd clog the trap. Pasta, rice, and any stringy vegetable like celery never gut pulverized enough and potato skins were hit and miss. We finally just stopped using it. I wound up purchasing the Evolution Excel for a few reasons: 1. at 1 HP it's twice as powerful as the Badger 5. 2. it has three grind stages - the Badger 5 has one. 3. it's designed to work through jams by raising the torque and/or reversing - be ready to grab that Allen wrench with the Badger 5. 4. much more use of stainless steel in the chamber and cutting components - the inside of my Badger 5 had significant rust. 5. although not a deal breaker, the Evolution Excel is designed to be much quieter. But, all of that came with a price. The Excel is about 250 dollars more than the Badger. But, what good is saving money if the disposal doesn't work properly? Is the Excel worth four times the Badger? That's a subjective question but for me the answer is yes. Installation went without a hitch. Since I already had an InSinkErator I used the existing collar. I moved the cable connector and the electric cord from the old disposal to the Elite. I punched out the dishwasher plug and moved on to mounting it under the sink. This is where you may run into a problem. The Elite is heavy - 25 pounds heavy. While it doesn't sound like a big deal to lift 25 pounds remember you're going to be lifting 25 pounds under your sink and when you get it positioned you're going to need a free hand to turn the mounting ring. I considered a number of solutions including using a car jack and stacking a bunch of books under it and then lifting it the last few inches with a crowbar. But, my wife was available and I was installing this under a double sink under a 48 inch cabinet. I was able to lift it while she turned the mounting ring. The side of the sink I have this mounted under doesn't drop straight down to the trap; the other side of the sink goes to the trap. The disposal discharges to a T on the other side. Surprisingly the Elite's discharge is about the same distance down from the sink as the Badger 5. I trimmed down the included straight discharge tube and hooked everything up exactly the same as before. After connecting the dishwasher drain, checking for drain leaks, and plugging it in, it was time to give it a try. Rather than go easy I loaded it up with ice cubes, turned on the water and flipped the switch. Gone in a matter of seconds and much, much quieter than the old Badger 5. You can actually talk to someone while the Elite is grinding ice cubes. Overall, I think the Elite is a terrific garbage disposal. It's well made, quiet, and does an excellent job doing what it's supposed to do. I expect to get many years of service from it.

Everything you could want in a disposal and more. While this may be one of the most expensive disposal, it is worth it especially with the 7 year in home (parts & labor) warranty. I've had another disposal in past and like most the warranty did not cover labor and in order to get it fixed/replaced you had to have them come out for service which would have been at least $100. This disposal is of such quality that the chance of needing repair is virtually nil. Also such a warranty tells you something about the company's confidence that it won't ever need repair. Taking all of this into account it is definitely worth it, especially since the quality is second to none. As an aside, after registering my disposal online I contacted the company about a bad link I found on their website but also told them that they have an "error" on there website where they describe the Evolution Excel, "Simply put, they are the best grinding, quietest line of disposals we have ever made" but I told them that they should delete "we have" as it is the best disposal ever made!
