A couple years ago we bought a waterproof/fireproof safe by Sentry. In order to make it waterproof they use some sort of water based insulation, I'm not sure if this is unique to Sentry or an industry practice. What happens in our safe is that everything is soggy and even my passport became warped and had some mold on the outside. I kept throwing in those silica packets that came with clothing and other items we purchased and they did not effect the moisture level inside the safe. I came across this and really didn't think I had anything to lose by trying it, the price was definitely right. When I received it, the crystals were already blue. I charged it right away and put it in the safe the next day. It's been a little more than 1 month and I have not yet seen the crystals turn pink. Everything inside the safe is nice and dry, all the paperwork feels a lot more crisp. I won't call the people who can't discern the color an blind like another reviewer. I can imagine some units may not work or people may have trouble seeing inside just like any product you buy nowadays. For me, the blue is a very dark blue. As I haven't seen the pink yet, I cannot comment on that. Although mine seems to have lasted longer than the advertised time, my papers and such are still very dry so I believe it is still working. If your item is defective, I would definitely get a replacement since I find this product to be a life saver (or a safe saver as it is, har har). Hope this helps. Edit 10/2/2013: I came back to post a picture of the pink color beads. I glanced at other reviews trying to find mine, and I'm shaking my head that people think this is for a vehicle or will take the place of an exhaust fan in your bathroom. This is a passive device, despite having a plug. It's strength is really for small places that you open and find mold or for preserving items. Anyway, still going strong here. I'll post a picture of the beads.

I bought this to keep the humidity down in a closet where I store items I don't want as exposed. I was looking for a product that did not require electricity and found this. I've been using it for about 3 months and it works great! My house normally rests at around 70% humidity in the summer, this drops my closet to around 40% humidity. It states you only have to recharge every 20-30 days. I've found that a bit optimistic. For me it's every 14 days I need to recharge it to dry it out. However I do live in a very humid climate. But that's not a huge issue for me.

I have a side by side refrigerator that creates a lot of moisture on the left divider wall of the refrigerator. It soaks a paper towel when I wipe off the moisture. I'm pleased because this unit Eva E-333 takes away the moisture. I ordered a second unit because I want to keep the moisture away when I renew the unit, which can take 24 hr. 10 - 12 hr. plugged in, then time to cool down after unplugged. I have to plug the unit back in because the color doesn't change until it's plugged in a second time. All this is worth it to keep moisture (and mold) out of the refrigerator.

This is my second Eva-Dry unit. I live in west central Florida, less than a half-mile from the gulf coast. The EVA-Dry system is the only way to go. I tried the "golden rod" electric dehumidifier, and while that's a good product... it consumes a small amount of power, and just continues to draw that power 24/7. I'm uncomfortable with having a heater element running 24/7 inside my safe. It's wasteful and it's a little risky. Well the EVA-Dry system eliminates that concern entirely! If you're not familiar with this simple system, the EVA-Dry product uses an internally installed packet of pure Silica Gel beads. These beads are hygroscopic (that means they LOVE water!) Like little "molecular sponges" these beads literally suck water from the air and absorb it into the pack. When they do, the normally yellow colored beads gradually turn a dark green color. That's when you know it's time to dry them out. The manufacturer like to use the term "recharge"... spin it any way you want, the beads just need to be dried out. The EVA-Dry unit has a little element in it that acts like a food dehydrator. When the beads dark green color indicate they are full of moisture, I take the unit of out the safe, remove the small built-in electrical plug, then plug the unit in. It takes about 10-12 hours for the built-in dehydrator to dry out the beads. When the gel is dry you'll see the beads turn yellow again... and you're good to go! I unplug the unit, flip the plug back into the EVA-Dry case... and the box is ready to go again. I place the box back into the safe. No cords, no more power needed. The Silica-Gel beads immediately begin absorbing moisture again. In my safe, a fully dried box will last about 2 months (depending on how often I open the safe). When the color turns, it's time to plug the unit in and dry the beads out again. It's brilliant simplicity! No fears of having anything running all of the time, yet very very effective. In my opinion this truly is the way to go. And the price? Well, you can see how cost-effective it is.

Since getting married, I've discovered just how smelly a closet can get from shoes. For the first year of marriage, I was buying DampRid to absorb the moisture (sweat) from the master closet, but the cost was really starting to add up. I didn't like having to continually buy new packs of DampRid. Then, I stumbled upon this. I love it! I feel much better about spending money on something that is re-usable and will last for years. It will save us lots of money we were throwing down the drain.

The hubby got one of these devices to keep our safe dry, since we live in California, and we have quite a bit of moisture in the air here. Our bathroom is also connected to our room so we have extra moisture seeping into our safe. I have heard the horror stories of molded passports and wedding certificates, and I did not want to go through the same problems! This dehumidifier works wonders, We have not had any issues with it, and it consistently turns pink every 3 weeks to let us know it is time to charge the device. If you do have more moisture in the air, the balls will turn color faster, as it is absorbing more moisture. I think you could use this device in a larger space than a safe, but you would require more charges as the device will be working harder to get the moisture out of the air. For larger spaces, you can also use 2 devices or more if needed.

I have been using these for 10 years. They say that they probably need replaced by ten years, so I ordered several more. They do a great job of pulling extra moisture out of my safes. I did figure out that I can replace the silica beads in the old units. I did not want to do it until I got the new units in place. But there are 4 screws in the back of the unit. You can loosen them and pop off the little door on the side, or take screw all the way out (beads will go everywhere, use a bucket), Dump the beads and order some from EBay. I replaced all the beads in all 3 of my old ones for $16. They are easy to put back together and after you refill the units, you can jimmy the door back in place. It has snap tabs on it, so you can pop the door back in. Each unit holds about 320 grams of beads.

I use this little dehumidifier in my tiny bathroom. Even though I have a fan in the bathroom it still would get mildew spots from the steam. I've had this in the bathroom for a couple months now and I haven't noticed any new mildew spots. I have to plug it in every week or two since there is so much moisture in the bathroom, but that is a very easy process. I love the size and ease of use! Inexpensive way to dehumidify your enclosed space. I use this in a gun safe, and it would have cost quite a bit to run power into the safe, and that would have give a entry point for fire/smoke. This enables me to keep the humidity down without the need for power. I find that it lasts a couple of months in the winter, and about a month in the summer before I have to "recharge it" (plug it in for a day)

I bought this for keeping a safe drier and lower on humidity. It does the job on a waist high two foot by two foot safe. I store important documents and a few guns/ammo in the safe in a damp location. I was worried about the documents or guns being damaged due to moisture but this has done the trick. I have to plug in and recharge about every three weeks so far. You just plug into an outlet overnight and its good to start working in the morning again. Seems to keep the humidity about 30% or so with the door closed and 80%+in the room. Bought another for a friend with a 6 ftx 3ftx3ft safe and he said it works well for him. He has to plug in every few weeks and gets into his safe more often.
