8/27/17 Orig Comment: Came with knife missing - SUPER disappointing... 9/6/17 Update: Wow - so the company emailed me with a phone # proposing to rectify the situation. Got ahold of the actual person, within 2 minutes, the missing knife was being shipped to our home! How's that for excellent customer service?! So stoked. Our son LOVES watching us prep his meals and we picked this set because the toy knife style was the most child-friendly we've seen on the market - the only one we were comfortable w/ him playing. Thanks so much, Melissa & Doug! Updating to 5 stars... :)

My nephew loves this set. We purchased it for Christmas and he has not stopped playing with it almost 2 weeks later. He is 3, therefore, 2 weeks of enjoyment from one toy is rare. He loves making pretend smoothies and prentending to bite the lemon with a comedic "sour face" to follow. We also have fun pretending to "shop and purchase" these fruits from the store. We use the wooden crate as a cutting board and he just loves it. The Velcro worked fine for us but am sure it has only so many times we can "cut it". Although it seems simple enough to replace if we ever have to. My only con (a very small one) with this item is it doesn't come with a "carry case" or away to keep all the pieces together BUT a plastic bag works fine :)

Whoever thought of this was awesome! I bought this for my 4 year old daughter. We've only had it for a few days and she has played with it non stop. I think it is a pretty well made set. Packaging: The set comes in a wooden tray with the sides about 2 inches tall and pretty well made. The fruit sits in molded plastic holding each piece separate. The bottom of the tray has a picture of hay. I took the plastic out so its easier for my daughter to take care of it, she can just put all the pieces in the tray. Knife: Good imitation wooden knife. It's about 8 inches long and shaped like a butcher knife. Fruit: Set comes with a strawberry, pear, kiwi, cantaloupe, melon, orange, and lemon. They are made of solid wood, and the pictures/colors on them are painted on, not stickers. The pieces of fruit are held together by velcro that is inset in the center of each piece. The velcro is white and it about the size of a nickel. I think the velcro could be larger on some of the bigger pieces of fruit (the pear for instance) to hold it together better, but what it has does do the trick. When cutting the fruit, it does imitate real cutting. My daughter actually has to put "work" into it to get them cut. As far as durability, I really can't say as we've only had it a week. I can see the velcro eventually giving out, but that would be an easy fix. I would recommend this product as I know it will give my daughter several years of fun!

We have a couple of Melissa and Doug wood sets (sandwich, veggies, sushi), but this is the best in quality. While others aren't painted on the inside, the fruit set is painted to look like real fruit, inside and out. My 19 month old son loves to pull apart and reassemble the velcro fruit and is starting to really get good at using the wooden knife. We did glue the cardboard backing to the inside of the crate. I know it's just there as part of the packaging appeal, but the crate is so much cuter with the backing.

My 3 yr old just loved this fruit cutting set. Learning to hold the items down with one hand and using a tool with the other hand was something she wasn't used to. She cuts the fruit and pretends to cook in one of her little pots, then serves the items on a plate. For a 3 yr old who is just discovering imaginary play, this set is a simple yet perfect toy. The fruit does seem sturdy, but I did notice small dings in the paint after a few rounds of dropping on the floor. Nothing that isn't expected of a toy that belongs to a toddler.

I love that Melissa and Doug give us alternatives to plastic toys. My 4 year-old son loves to help in the kitchen and had been begging to cut food so I was so excited when I came across this. Now he has his own food he can safely cut and serve. The food is well made. It’s nice that it comes in it’s own crate so you have somewhere to store it. It has Velcro that holds the pieces together. We all know that Velcro breaks down over time so that’s my only concern. Only time will tell. I would highly recommend it.

Best toy ever! I got this set for my boyfriend's 3-year-old for when she visits. These are always the first things she reaches for (along with a few other M&D cutting sets I later purchased), and they keep her occupied for hours. They're great learning tools for colors, numbers, and food names, and I was amazed how within just a few hours, she went from struggling to cut every piece to then chopping them faster than I could put them back together. I love the classic look and feel of wooden toys, and they're extremely durable for as much use as they've seen.

I’m just a huge fan of all things Melissa & Doug. My youngest son loves it all. I love it, because it actually makes him use his imagination! It doesn’t have lights and sounds and he doesn’t have to sit in front of a screen to play with it. This is one of his favorite toys!

We love Melissa and Doug - and our almost 2 year old has enjoyed adding this cutting fruit set to his growing collection. The velcro is strong enough to hold the pieces together without falling apart on their own (even the heavier pieces), but loose enough that it's not difficult for little ones to "cut" through it. We also love that the velcro is soft enough that it doesn't scratch or irritate our little ones skin while he's handling the pieces.

My kids were yanking this out of my hands as I pulled it out of the box! They have been playing with this longer than than they did their Christmas presents. The pieces are wood, well made but not heavy. The pieces connect by Velcro, and the kids use a play knife to cut the pieces in half. I think it will build good band strength to prepare them for writing. The colors are bright and I do not foresee any chipping in the toys. I’m very pleased and would highly recommend this product to another parent!
