Love this snow rake, just wish I had purchased it earlier! It is easy to assemble and disassemble for storage, and the wheels keep the rake from scraping your roof shingles but also get close enough to the shingles to remove the snow. In the past we have borrowed other brands from neighbors and it was such a nightmare--this cuts job time and is easier on the shoulders! i highly recommend that anyone in areas with annual heavy snowfall own one of these-- they are so easy to use and when you need a snow rake, this is the one you want to use on your roof.

so easy to use!! pulled that snow right off the roof and the little wheels - you can feel them gliding along the roof (oddly reassuring that the rake isn't trashing your roof). HIGHLY Recommend!

I was a little concerned when I saw that the head broke off for another purchaser. The instructions say to take passes of one foot at a time. I did that and was very happy with the results, and I got to stay on the ground!

In the aftermath of Snowpocalypse a few years back, I had ice dams form on the roof, and the melting snow did thousands of dollars of damage to my home. So with the Snowzilla blizzard zeroing in on DC, I ordered this snow rake. It came in time to help after we had 30" of snow. It was easy to assemble and went right to work. First, it cleaned off the pile of snow on top of my car. I had tried using my snow shovel before the rake arrived, and hadn't gotten very far. I couldn't believe how much faster and easier it was with the snow rake. Two minutes, and my car was unburied. Then I went for the eaves. The rake easily reached my roof (I have a one story home), and pulled off the snow, freeing the gutters. Now, when the snow melts off the roof, the water will drain away and won't refreeze. If it snows where you live, I strongly recommend this item.

My house has zero overhang in the back so I need to rake my roof if I get more than 5-6 inches of snow acculturation. I got the AVA500 and the SRD20 back in 2012. The AVA500 has stayed in the box and just today (2/14/2015) I broke it out. I've used the SRD20 every year with good success. This winter we've seen heavy snow and the weight and the cold has made it more difficult to rake with the SRD20 when the snow got crusty. The AVA500 cut right through the 14 inch crusty week old snow on my roof and I was able to complete the job like you see in the demo videos. I'll still use the SRD20 on fresh snow because the pole is much lighter and easier to handle but when I've got heavy and crusty snow the AVA500 is the one I will use for sure.

Finally had a chance to try this out over the weekend. First major snowfall here in midcoast Maine. I love this roof rake. Very easy to assemble and use - and I like that you can make the pole as long or short as you need it to be. It gets the job done quickly - and I even used it to "shovel" my driveway (about 4 inches of snow) this morning - I placed the rake away from me and then dragged it toward me (wheels helped) creating a "ridge" of snow, stepped sideways, and continued. After working my way down the drive I then used my offset shovel to take care of the ridge. Record time!

Purchased this rake after returning from Florida and finding about 3 feet of hard packed snow on our roof. This rake handled the hard, crusty snow which required some hard tugging to break through. The handle is 1 5/8" diameter which definitely helps. I had seen others that were only 1" diameter and I am sure they would be way too flimsy. With 20 foot handle I was able to get most of the way up the roof on our single story L shaped ranch style house while standing on the ground. I will be ordering a couple 4 foot extensions to avoid having to get up on a ladder to finish the job.

This did a fine job in a year of record snowfall and cold here in Massachusetts. The wheels are good for not scraping the roof too hard and the plastic snow blade was insurance against damaging my flat rubber roof that extends over my kitchen. The rake is strong enough if you use it properly, but none of the snow rakes are made for fighting with ice. On the sloped roof I removed deep snow from the bottom of the roof first and gradually worked my way to the top. I manuvered the rake to rise over the top of an eight inch high ice dam at the bottom of the roof. I melted channels in the ice dam by draping stockings filled with ice melt over the dam for a few days. The main thing is to get the soft snow off the roof so it doesn't keep melting and sending water to pile up behind the ice dam.

I bought this when an ice dam caused a leak recently. When I unpacked the parts I found the rake head had 2 small cracks. I contacted Avalanche support and customer service was efficient and helpful. They immediately shipped out a replacement part. I have used the rake twice and found it worked well, is light and easy to use. The poles are easy to snap into each other and take apart after use. The only exception is that it was hard to get the final pole into the rake, but I suspect this is deliberate, so that the rake head-pole connection does not flop around. I leave the rake attached to one section of pole, when storing. The sections are only 4 feet, so it is still easy to store all the parts in a corner. There is a tradeoff between weight and ruggedness in snow rakes and I like the design. Ruggedness seems fine. When it gets hard to pull, backoff and pull a bit less in each pass. I strongly recommend the Avalanche SRD20 as an excellent tool, backed by a reliable manufacturer. They mold both the URL and 800 number for customer support on the rake.

I only used this a few times but it worked well. As other reviewers have said, this is not a bulldozer. You have to treat it gently. I waited until late in the winter when snow had piled up and melted and froze. That was a mistake because much of the snow-ice was too stuck to pull off with this. I think the best thing to do is use this regularly during the winter so that ice-dams don't form at the base of the roof. Before you buy a snow rake, I suggest looking at the terrain of your ground and your roof to make sure that the rake can reach the areas of the roof that you want. For example, if you have a cliff in your yard, the angle to the roof may be too steep for the rake to reach very far up on the roof.
