My husband and his best buddy are avid ocean kayak fisherman. They each got one and were able to conveniently communicate with each other when they had to divide and conquer in the open ocean. The radio also gives me a lot of piece of mind because it allows them to easily contact the coast guard or other vessels for assistance in case of an emergency. My husband dropped his in the salt water a couple times and it still works just fine. The battery life is really good in that he only has to charge it about every 2-3 trips.

Solid radio. Great quality! I live near the ocean, and although I haven't picked up and radio traffic on this radio, I do get a strong radio signal for the weather and water conditions. I will try to see if I pick up and traffic next time I am on the water, but as far as I can tell, this will be a valuable asset to have while on my boat.

I sail on Lake Ontario, but there is a draw bridge between my slip and the lake. Every time I sail I must call the bridge on my way out...and again on my way in. I naturally have a large radio installed in the cabin, but this handheld unit that is kept on my pedestal guard at the helm is indispensable. It has great range and easily returns to the bridge's hailing channel. This was a good purchase.

Bought this to get familiar with boat traffic before I buy my first big boat. It's been really easy to use with excellent battery life and clear audio. I have not dropped it in the water yet to check its water resistance, but I have heard positive reports from those who accidentallly did.

Works great in my little jet boat on the ocean. Nice to have the security of being able to call for help. After reading complaints about battery life, I've had it unplugged for weeks and have had it on for 6+ Hours 3 times without charging in between.

I have been testing this radio for about 3 weeks now on my truck vehicle to see how communications is holding up. I tried good distance scanning radio for about 8 miles away from coastline and to see if I could hear coast guard communications and it passed my test. The test was done in near California coastal near Santa Monica beach. When it comes to life safety I would not use any product until I’m satisfied not what people say about the product. Don’t get me wrong It’s always is good to hear positive reviews but I like to convince myself first by doing what so many people don’t like to do and that’s spend time and get to know what your buying. Battery life was also holding up very well on rechargeable battery’s and It would give you at lest 6 hours with no problems. I always keep extra battery on side no matter how well the battery will perform. I have not put the radio in water wet test that’s because even when radio is mentioned it’s somewhat water resistant I all ways protect my electronics from getting wet. So that’s my review and I hope this helps you out making your decision.

I bought this to use as an emergency communication device for when I'm snorkeling on offshore reefs. Although it has been built with enough watertight-ness to be submerged, I none-the-less store mine inside a waterproof bag along with a liter of water and a few powerbars to act as a mini-rescue kit in case I run into trouble like the outboard engine failing to operate. I store it in the bag just to keep it from getting salty which I figure wouldn't be desirable if it could be avoided. In testing, I found the range and clarity to be fully adequate for communication back with the main sailboat when I'm a few miles away in my inflatable. It also seems to hold a charge for a week w/o any problem.

I got the radio thinking it will be something that I could use in an emergency. Instead I find myself using it almost daily to get weather updates and if I'm going out kayaking I can get local surf and buoy information too. Crisp, clear reception and broadcasting with small craft to ship or shore stations unless you are close to a craft that has a tall radio mast then you can't receive properly. I keep it attached to my NRS PFD shoulder strap with a handgrenade strap I picked up in a local surplus store for added support. All in all, I would and have recommended this radio to family and friends.

Have not had a chance to test the floating claim but I've been very happy with the radio. The scan features are great as well as the weather alert although so far the alert has never gone off. The emergency channel scanning has given some interesting transmissions but fortunately that's all its been used for. Range on the other hand I'm not quite as impressed with. If you are expecting a replacement for your 25 watt boat mounted radio this is not it - but you really shouldn't be expecting that from a hand held. For the lakes I use this on I am pretty sure I can reach the coast guard/towing service if needed although I may need to stand on my pedestal seat to get the signal out. the 1/2.5/5 watt selection is nice as well although unless you are transmitting frequently it wont do much for your battery life. Last observation, the charger clips to the base pretty well and unless you beat it up or drop while connected I don't see it breaking. If you don't press the buttons when you try to release the charger it probably wont last long though. Overall, very happy with this purchase and this product is definitely deserving of being listed as the #1 seller on amazon for handheld marine radios.

This radio is awesome and a great price. It can monitor 3 safety channels and weather channel simultaneously. You can also program channels and set it to scan through them. It comes with a cigarate lighter style 12 volt charger. You can also grab a 12 volt to normal wall outlet converter if you want to charge at home. I plan on charging it in my truck on the way to the lake but it takes about 3 1/2 hours to fully charge according to owners manual. Seems super durable and was able to turn it on and hear the weather channel from my kitchen table. Pretty cool. Hope this review was helpful, let me know if you have any questions.
