It smells but the cat loves it!
It smells but the cat loves it! My cat has extra long canines, and while it seems that he'd be great at chunky meat, he's not. He has problems chewing shredded/chunky wet cat food, and has a gluten/grain allergy (yeah, he's a pain in the ass but we love him). This is like pâté & he has no probs scarfing it down. Although he has raunchy breath after, he's happy. (Edit) Reading another review, I figured out why he barfs up (if you're buying cat food & have a cat, they barf, so don't go "ewww") the Fancy Feast Grilled varities... There's gluten in them besides being chunky shreds. So he has issues chewing it & digesting it. Lesson learned & pâté only for Boo Boo kitty.

Our cats love Fancy Feast Classic (paté)
This three-flavor variety of 24 cans just arrived yesterday (Poultry & Beef) and so far, all four cats gobble it up! This is amazing to me because for the last three weeks I've been trying to get our four cats to try better food due to the eldest recently being diagnosed with diabetes, so I've had them try several different brands so far without much success (all expensive high protein & fat but very low carbs). They had been eating Friskies canned (pate - 5.5 oz cans-one can divided up four ways, once per day) and until about a year ago they were eating Blue Buffalo Indoor (Dry), but I changed it to Purina One Sensitive Systems (Dry) because one of our cats often upchucking his food (possible allergy). The Purina One did help that problem, but I've since learned that it is too high in [bad] carbs, which IMO likely exacerbated our eldest cat's system (diabetes). Most dry food is too high in carbs & not recommended as a primary source of food. But I've found several cat health web sites with so many people stating that they had switched to Fancy Feast classic with great success, especially with their diabetic cats because of the amount of protein / moderate fat / low carbs. So I decided to give it a try with our cats. Until I can find something better (& more expensive!), this will work. Our (rescued) eldest cat is about 16 or 17 years old and only just started insulin (1 unit 2x per day)...my goal is to get him regulated with food only-no insulin. As for the dry food, I've temporarily put out three different small dishes to see if they even need/want it during the day (Purina Vet DM / Instinct Ultimate / Blue Buffalo Wilderness duck). The Purina DM is through our vet, and although it's supposed to be for diabetic cats (or any cat) it's very high in carbs so I'm not understanding that. Perhaps because the protein is really high that the extra carbs is needed to digest the protein(?) UPDATE: Our cats still love Fancy Feast. We've expanded from these three flavors to other available flavors, but sticking with the Classic pâté flavors. But, I've continued to try them on other canned food brands that are considered "better for our pets" (high protein/moderate fat/low carbs) and they just won't eat them: Instinct Ultimate Protein / Natural Balance / Dr.Elsey's / Purina One Vet DM / Wellness CORE Natural Grain Free Wet Paté / Nutro Perfect Portions. I will continue to try other brands of canned food, but as long as we can find a good mix of brands/flavors that they like & are high protein/moderate fat/low carbs, that will do. As for the dry food to have available in between Fancy Feast meals, I still haven't found one single brand/flavor that our cats like & that's "good for them". They "sort of" like Instinct Ultimate Protein Grain Free Chicken and Walmart's Pure Balance Wild & Free Turkey Grain Free. Wet food needs to be the primary food source because most dry food really isn't "good" for them. I just need to keep a small dish out for them for in between the canned food meals, especially if we aren't home from work yet.

Best cat food for folks on a budget
The fact that you're reading a cat food review tells me you like to do your research. So then you probably know that cats are obligate carnivores, which means they only eat meat. They hunt hundreds of species of bugs and birds and small rodents and mammals. So if you want to save money on vet bills, you gotta feed your cat wet food. Just look at the ingredient list, fancy feast is the cheapest wet food with protein as the main ingredient. Don't bother with grains and starches. I've been feeding my cat fancy feast for his entire life, everyone always comments on how soft and healthy his coat is. For a while i was going crazy and buying frozen raw food, but I worried about bacteria and contamination. I looked into making food (obligate carnivores, just give them some meat, right?) wrong. Remember when I mentioned they hunt like 237 species? They eat mostly meat, but they also need crazy stuff like taurine and other weird things cats get from eating bugs and spiders and birds I guess. Anyway it's hard to get the balance right and you could very easily make your cat sick if you're not extremely careful. My cat has tried all the meat seafood cans and he seems to love chicken and turkey the best. If you can afford to go with the organic free range all singing all dancing stuff, you probably wouldn't even bother reading this. But if like me, you love your cat and are also on a budget: go with the ingredient list, go with the price per can. Do the math: it's always been fancy feast.

Reversed diabetes!!! I just couldn't believe it!!!
I spent three and a half years (and a small fortune) trying the most expensive grainfree, raw, organic, and prescription diabetic cat foods wet and dry available. I tried everything even whole ground raw rabbit. Gross. I wanted to get my diabetic cat in remission and off of insulin so bad. I am an RN so I checked her blood sugar a couple times a day. I was skeptical when I saw all the reviews saying it stopped type 2 diabetes in cats from progressing and even reversed it in many cats and it took my cat a good 3 months to get used to eating pate only diet. I was amazed that in the first few weeks of being on this food her blood sugar was too low to need insulin several times a week and after 4 weeks on this food I was able to take her off insulin all together. My vet follows my old cat closely and was amazed that of all things it was an over the counter grocery store brand food that did the trick after all this time. The classic pate ones are the only ones that didn't spike her blood sugar. She is 17 years old now and weighs 9 lbs instead of 14. She has been off of insulin for almost a year and has not needed frequent vet check ups or bladder infection treatments or insulin once. It took me this long to be convinced that it was truly going to keep her out of diabetic trouble and I am so so grateful to have finally found this!

Great for diabetic cats!
I started my cats on Fancy Feast Classic varieties when one of them became diabetic. It offers some of the highest protein/lowest carbohydrates on the market and is a great alternative to the very expensive veterinarian brands for diabetic diets. Ordering it on Amazon was very comparable in price to the big chain stores, and of course if you have Prime you can have it delivered right to your door for free. Any of the classic varieties meet the requirements for a good diabetic cat diet, but there is some school of thought that warns against feeding cats too much or only the seafood varieties, as the quality of fish may include fish oils that are rancid or near rancid. The seafood varieties may also contain higher heavy metals, so I feed my animals fish only sparingly. It might have been just my good fortune, but after starting the diabetic cat on insulin and changing his diet, he was able to go off insulin after about three months and did not require insulin for the remainder of his life. I continue to feed my other cat Fancy Feast, because there is some research that indicates the increase of cats with diabetes might be related to a diet of dry food that is high carbohydrate and lower in protein.

We got this [[ASIN:B01N8XE12U Vitapet Probiotic Powder Blend For Dogs and Cats with 5 Billion CFU Per Serving] for an adopted shelter . The vet recommended that I keep my Rosie on flora probiotic she's doing great I will make sure that she stays healthy from here on by using Vitapet’s probiotic. Thank you!

Cat and human both happy
Honestly, it's strange that one of the most common and least expensive wet foods for cats is so high quality, but it is. I did a fair amount of research and found that Fancy Feast has great nutritional value, especially for the price. Wet food is generally better for cats because of the moisture content, especially for cats like mine who don't like to drink much water. We tried a few other foods as well, but she would complain during the night for some reason. When she was on dry food she sometimes ate too fast and vomited. On Fancy Feast she doesn't eat too fast, she doesn't complain at night, and she must like it because she comes running when the can opens! This is keeping my active senior cat happy, so I'm happy.

Best product for the price
My wife is a veterinarian who loves her cat very much. She had a whole set of scientific white papers put together where a veterinary researcher compared the makeup of different brands and varieties of catfood (comparing the amount of carbs and proteins, and other things that escape my memory). This particular variety (Poultry & Beef Classic Pate) was one of the best and the lowest cost among the top rated. I don't remember the other top ones, but this is the food we settled on for our cat. He's very healthy and his coat is silky, shiny, and sheds very little. His diet is supplemented by a few kernels of dry food for treats (cats love carbs), and in the summer whatever rabbits, squirrels, and birds he can catch. Too much dry food and he gets hairballs, but on this food with limited dry food, he does well. He seems to like it and always makes it home for dinner. We also supplement it with Purina Fortiflora Feline Nutritional Supplement Box, 30gm or if you prefer to stock up Purina Fortiflora Nutritional Supplement for Cats (Pack of 6). He realllly likes that stuff. My wife typically feeds him, so one night when I fed him, I forgot to add his fortiflora. Despite the fact that he had been limping on 3 legs all day and feeling terrible, our cat limped in a circle around his bowl and when I still didn't get it, he pawed at the bowl holding the fortiflora packets. He devoured his food after I sprinkled the packet on top.

Diabetic cat? READ THIS!
If you have a diabetic cat on insulin shots, you need to know this. My cat became diabetic and my vet put him on insulin shots 2x day, and a “low carb” diet (expensive canned Hill’s Science Diet). I knew there was now way I could consistently be available to provide my cat the insulin every 12 hours (I am on call and work unpredictable hours). I knew there had to be an alternative. I did a ton of research online and found a study done by a vet detailing how diabetes in cats can be controlled, if not cured by switching their diet. They key is an extremely low carb (NO dry food) diet. The study also outlined the carb content of almost every brand of cat food. One of the lowest carb foods was Fancy Feast Pate’ (NOT the flavors shredded with gravy). It is way lower in carbs than the Science Diet my vet put him on. So after two months of giving him insulin shots, I figured I’d try switching to this food. Within one month my cat was off insulin completely!! My vet couldn’t believe it. My cat went into remission almost immediately. It’s been two years now and he’s like a brand new cat! He’s had no episodes and has a clean bill of health. It’s remarkable really. So if you have a diabetic cat, please try this. I also put my cat on a feeding schedule, never letting him go more than about 4 hours without food. I did this by using an automatic feeder that has two removable wells and ice packs under them. Works like a charm! No more insulin, no more needles! HE’S CURED!
