Great product!
Works great! Our downstairs central air conditioning heat pump went out. While waiting on our new ductless replacement units to come in & be installed, we decided to give this 14k, dual hose air conditioning heat pump unit a try. In 95+ degree weather it is easily & effective cooling 750 ft2 down to below 70 degrees. We have now opened up the other 1300 ft2 of our downstairs & with the use of oscillating fans it has also dropped the temps from 95+ in those rooms to 81 degrees. I have no doubt that 2 of these units would effectively cool our entire 2050 ft2 downstairs to a reasonable level, if we decided to do that instead of the ductless heat pumps that we've ordered. I can't yet speak for the effectiveness of the heating function. Not sure about how the cost of running this unit will compare to a more efficient unit, since we haven't gotten a bill after we began using it, but the paperwork stated that the annual cost to operate it is estimated at $198, with an energy efficiency rating of 11.2. I'm not sure how this will translate to the utility rates in my area, but that sounds pretty good. At this point the only negatives about the unit that I can see are the noise & the ghetto appearance of the hoses. The appearance & noise are no worse than the regular window unit air conditioner that I had growing up. The noise rating is clearly stated in the description at <56 dBa. The dBa noise meter on my phone fluctuates between 55-58 dBa, sitting right beside it. We can easily carry on conversations & watch television in the room with it running. I always find it odd that folks will review a product & then complain about features that are inherent about the nature of the product, so understand that this is not my intent. I just hoped to provide insight for potential buyers.

Definitely puts out cold air!!!
Naturally the central A/C unit blows out just as the heat wave hits. New unit est. $3K+. I only need to really cool down two rooms for a couple of hours on the really hot days. So why cool the whole house. This unit arrived and was cooling the two rooms within 30 minutes. The instructions are almost idiot proof. They could be printed a little large for older eyes like mine. You only need a #2 Philips screwdriver. I'm cooling about 350 sq. ft. If the heat pump cycle works as well as the A/C this coming it will be awfully hard to spend the $$$ on a new central unit. So far its costing less to run than the central unit. Only drawback is it is a little loud for the bedroom. But it usually cools off by 10 pm so we open the windows and turn on the fans anyway. Dropped from 90 degrees to mid 70s in about an hour.

Great unit for AC and heat
This thing is awesome. Its pretty big and the plastic panel that goes in the window is slightly flimsy but it does its job and has never fallen out. I have heard people complain about the noise and have no idea what they are talking about. I have to be really paying attention to tell the difference between when it is just the fan and when the compressor is on. This thing cools the whole upstairs of my bungalow style house with ease, even when I have my huge TV, huge monitor, laptop, and gaming pc running to their max. Tubes are of high quality and I wrapped the exhaust tube with that foily bubble wrap stuff. UPDATE: Now started using this as a heater in the winter too for my upstairs. It does a pretty good job with the intake hose off and exhaust hose out the window. I'm not sure if it is as efficient as one of those ceramic heaters though, it takes about 1200w on heat mode and I don't see any specs on how many BTUs it gives off.

Much quieter than expected heats my 20x25' 500sq/foot bedroom quite well with a secondary heater on the other side of the room.
Only used the heat pump mode thus far, I will have to post a follow-up review after summer has set in and I use it as an A/C unit. Heat works well but I did have to remove the intake hose to recirculate the inside air rather than drawing in arctic-cold air. Much quieter than I had expected, remote control requires good line of sight to function properly, even a slight angle can cause it to not send properly. I have ducted through pipes into my attic which works quite well for the exhaust, I'll have to follow-up come summer for the intake. My bedroom is large and I do have some air leakage so I do use a small secondary heater to keep it at a temperature where the unit will function properly, it blows quite warm and doesn't stay on constantly so it's cycling properly when it reaches the set temperature.

My son bought one of these last summer and loves it so, I figured I would give it a try. He advised me to buy the one that heats, also. Simple set up. The heat works way better than I thought it would! I have been using it to heat things up on the nights that go down into the 30-40’s and it does a great job! I can heat 800 sq feet easily with it! Ive tried the a/c once or twice on warm days just to see how well it works and it looks promising!! The noise level it pretty high but, no higher than the window a/c I previously used. I am not noticing much of an increase in my electric bill....summer will put that to the test. I am going to get a drain hose because the unit shuts off because the water needs to be drained out frequently or the unit shuts off and the drain is way in the back on the very bottom so, it is a little hard to manage draining the water without getting water on the floor. Overal, I am very happy with this purchase!! Just di yourself a favor and read a lot if comments. It will save you from simple mistakes in running this unit and give you some helpful hints and a good education about the unit because a lot of the questions are answered by the manufacturer.

Works as advertised... great machine!
I have had this unit for a week now and have been very impressed with it's performance, enough to write my first Amazon review. It's been abnormally hot here in the Pacific NW this summer, and my 575 sq ft apartment had gotten up into the mid 80s inside with little to no relief even with windows opened at night. This 14000 BTU machine does the job though. Set up would have been easy, but I have casement crank windows which proved to be a little tricky. I ended up going to a plastics company and getting a piece of acrylic cut to the size of my window screen, with two air ducts cut out for the hoses. Put it up in the window with weather stripping tape and was good to go. Temperatures have been in the upper 80s and low 90s consistently this week and this machine has easily kept the apartment in the low 70s without issue. I've gotten it as low as 68. Could have gone lower, but have no interest in doing so. Have not seen any condensation collecting. The noise level is acceptable (what do you expect, it's an air conditioner?). The one hose is warm to the touch, but not hot enough to conflict with the cooling of the room. To date, it's been a lifesaver. I'm extremely pleased with the purchase and the AC's performance.

It does the job!
The Whynter 14,000 BTU Dual Hose Portable Air Conditioner with Heater (ARC-14SH) is wonderful. We have a 1 bedroom 1920's apartment unit in Los Angeles, which has no air conditioning. Our Whynter has been running daily since the day we received it. I can now sleep comfortably at night. There has been no leaking, and no need to drain. The sound of the blower isn't quiet, but it's not that bad. We got so used to it, that on a day we really didn't need it on, we ended up turning it on anyway to drown out the sounds of neighbors (TVs, music, dogs barking, baby crying). We had forgotten how loud neighbors can be. To hear our own TV over the sound of the portable unit, we use wireless TV ear buds/headphones; this way we can keep our TV volume low and adjust the volume on our headsets. Installation wasn't hard. The window fitting that came with the unit did not work for us. We had to craft our own, which was not an issue. We used the window fitting that came with the unit as a template to cut the right size holes for the venting hoses. Our electric bill increased about $40 a month. We turn the unit off when we leave for work and turn it on when we get home and run it all night. We haven't used the heater yet, so I can't comment on how that works.

Recommend the one without the heater
I’ve had this model for the past 5 years and I can say that it runs at least 16 hours a day and 24 hours a day on the weekends, yes even in winter when I use it for white noise. Although the heater gave out a few years ago the air conditioner runs solid. 400 sq foot Master bedroom and it keeps it as cold as you want it. I wash the filter every few months=important. Solid as a rock, reliable, just keeps going. Recommend the one without the heater.
