5 weeks for all three of my cats to figure it out and now they love it. We put it on our bedroom door ...
This works so well. My cats never have a problem with it. It took about 2.5 weeks for all three of my cats to figure it out and now they love it. We put it on our bedroom door because we live in a house with 5 cats but only 3 of them are ours. I keep the door closed to keep the other cats out of my room. I was sick of having to get up to let my cats in/out in the middle of the night. This was the perfect solution. The only downside is that both the locking mechanism and the door flap are kind of loud when my cats go through it which isn't ideal for a bedroom. But it's definitely better than having to get out of bed and open the door.

My cat can finally eat in peace!
I used the cat flap as a door into a plastic container so that my little cat can eat in peace, safe from the bigger cat who is always stealing her food. Notice I put the door near one end, seeing how previous reviewers mentioned that the tail can "hold" the door open, allowing other pets to enter. This way when my cat goes in, she has to turn to the right to eat the food at the far end, thus removing her tail from the door. It took a day or so before she could get out on her own, (I lifted her in to eat and replaced the cover,) and then another week to be able to get all the way in and out on her own. You can see the tape I put on the door to help me to show her how to push the door open from the inside. I would pull on the tape so she could see it open, then let go when she moved forward. Notice too how my hubby drilled holes in the container, so that there is never a fear that if somehow she couldn't get out, there will be enough air for her. Also, it allows the smell of the cat food to entice her into the container. Amazingly enough the bigger cat didn't need any training at all! The door is locked for her, but she went right up to it, (to eat the few pieces of kibble I had put there to entice the little cat.) Then she bonked the door, trying to get in! LOL Now she just walks off and so far hasn't bothered trying to get in again. Except for 1 time I closed the door to the den where the container is, to keep the bigger kitty in there while we ate supper, and when I opened the door to let her out, the whole container had been tipped upside down, I guess she had a try at getting in to the container. :) So this is working really well. ONE caution, if you use this for feeding issues, weigh all the animals right off the bat, so that you can keep track of any pets gaining or losing weight. My little kitty gained a quarter of a pound by being able to eat in peace, but the big kitty lost almost a whole pound, now that she couldn't steal food! Now I have to remember to feed her a little extra food, because that much loss is dangerous for kitties.

Highly recommend
This cat door is rather miraculous. The door is a bit tighter than some other models but my 12 lb cat has no trouble using it. Luckily she was already used to the previous version of this door that recognized a collar tag. Maybe because of that she didn't need to get used to the sound or any lag time in the door opening while reading the chip. The collar tag version was also much trickier to set up because the angle at which the cat entered the door affected it's ability to read that collar tag - took me forever to get that straight That is not a problem with this door. She went thru the door once, and voila! In addition, because the exterior of the door is not simply sitting on the outside of the unit, but inside a kind of semi tunnel, it would be very hard for any critter, even if quite clever, to figure out how to get in. Note: I briefly posted an irritated review because the battery sensors had rusted over after a year and I could not fix them. Then I decided to reach out to the company to ask how to fix it and they sent me a new one in a matter of days! So, customer service is also excellent.

Great for keeping intruder cats out
I am very impressed with the microchip door. It is easy to instal. I did have to purchase a few extenders given I put ours in an exterior wall. It replace our other non-microchip cat door. Had to do something about an intruder cat that kept coming into our house to eat my cats food and it would also look for her to attack her in her own home. This cat is huge and mean and not afraid of me at all. I'm so happy to have found this product to keep my sweet kitty safe in her own home. I did have to buy a microchip after buying this door because as I tried to program the door and it would not program it was discovered my cat had never been microchipped at the humane society were we got her from. Easy fix tho. I bought a microchip off Amazon. (A mini) it was easy to inject into my kitty and she didn't even flinch. The door programmed just fine and is working quite well for us.

Great product, works exactly as described
Great product, works exactly as described. Feels sturdy and well made. The flap door feels secure when closed. Easy to program by following the instructions. I am using this product in the same way as another reviewer- I attached it to a large plastic storage box to allow my kidney failure cat a private "room" to eat her special prescription food without my other cat stealing it all. We have the flap programmed to only recognize the microchip of Kidney Cat, and Other Cat has not been able to go inside the box. It does not unlock for Other Cat, and (most impressively) she cannot pry open the little door with her paws/claws. Huge win! I will say that depending on your cat, be prepared with your patience and willingness to spend a LOT of training time. Both of my cats have been indoors their entire lives (9 years) and I guess they do not understand doors. Kidney Cat still does not really understand the concept that she can push open the door by herself, without human help. We've taken many baby steps to train her and she has made great progress, but we are still not there yet after 1 month of consistent every day use for all of her feedings. If you want to know what our training process has been, I will detail it below. Otherwise, my review ends here that this product is really great and I would buy it again if I needed another microchip reading door. 1. Place food bowl next to, but outside of, the storage box. 2. Gradually move food closer to box, until she is eating inside the box with lid off. 3. Cut hole where cat flap will go. Allow cat to walk through hole to eat from food bowl. No flap yet. 4. Install flap, tape open door so cat can walk through opening without needing to figure out the door yet. 5. Gradually lower the height of the flap so cat gets used to the idea of the flap plastic touching her head/back as she passes through. We thought out cat would figure it out at this stage, but she did not. So training continues!... 6. Attach string to both sides of cat flap door. Tape the microchip/locking mechanism down so you will be able to pull open the door with those pieces of string ahead of your cat as she tries to enter. Maybe this helps cats with more brain cells than mine to disassociate the human from the door opening/closing. Since the magnetic closure is pretty strong, this step helped give my cat a little extra help with pushing open the door. 7. Remove tape on the locking mechanism so cat will start to learn that she needs to push the door more quickly once she has put her head inside. Because she has been putting her head in there and day dreaming too long about her food that is mere inches away but since she took forever, the flap locked itself again. 8. Give cat a thousand yard stare as she begs and cries for food, even though her food bowl is full inside her bowl and all she needs to do is push open a flap to get it. 9. Put cat in front of flap and give a little nudge to her front paws to urge her to use paws to open the door if she does not prefer to headbutt the door. 10. Write a review on Amazon and hope that another user will have some more training ideas to get this concept to stick with your cat! Hopeful that she will learn someday but in the meantime at least it keeps her prescription food safe from my other hungry cat. :)

Great for controling diets in multi-pet home
SureFlap's service and product is great. We have a diabetic cat named Bubbles who was having her food eaten by her larger brother. Being how she prefers to eat a little at a time, our lives consisted of closing her in a room with her food, having her complain 5 minutes later, letting her out, having her complain 15 minutes later that she's hungry, letting her back in, et cetera, et cetera, for four hours twice a day. Ugh! SureFlap sent us a SureFlap with a delayed clicking mechanism as our cat is so nervous and jumpy. We mounted the SureFlap into a plastic storage bin, put a cloth placemat in the bin, and Bubbles is now in and out of the bin all night long, eating whenever she desires. We are all very, very happy about this. Well, all happy except her brother. By the way, the Duracell batteries have been fine for a month now even though she is constantly in and out of the SureFlap. for users with a timid cat it took us a few weeks of training her with kitty treats at the door and opening it for her and leading her to her wet food. Then one day she just used it on her own. The boy cat is normally very resourceful about stealing her food and has yet to succeed. Thanks, SureFlap, for fantastic service and product.

Awesome product
This product is awesome. Works just as advertised. We have used it for four barn cats. No opossums, raccoons, or strays get into the pole barn, We took cats to local farm store who has a vet visit for immunizations. This was more than half the price to get chips implanted. I'm just getting around to doing this review. We have had it three years. No problems. We change battery once a year and clean the door when it needs it. It is installed where it doesnt get rained or snowed on. I don't know about hot or cold air coming in around it. Ease of installation depends on door or wall where you want to put it. My husband is a handyman so it was easy to install in a metal pole barn.

Works Great!
This is one review I am glad to participate in. I love this thing. I only had a few days to install it, program it, and teach my cat to use it. Teaching him to go out was easy, but going in was a little harder since it is smaller than the other door he is used to. It's kind of a small tunnel going in. Anyway the first two times I had to force him in and I was afraid he would get mad and hate it. But after a day or so I picked him up and brought him over to it (he hates when I pick him up) but I released him in front of it and he went in without too much resistance. That was all I could do before we left him to his own for 2 weeks this past Christmas. When we got back he was lounging on the couch happy as can be. Success! He uses it all the time now.

and all the people who moved in had cats so it was a good selling point
NOTE,- YOU HAVE TO HAVE YOUR CATS MICROCHIPPED FOR THIS TO WORK AS IT PAIRS WITH THEIR CHIPS, NO NEED FOR NUMBERS [ IF YOU CANT FIND THEM ] , JUST THE CATS WILL SET IT FOR YOU. This is my third one as I have moved house a few times and left them behind, and all the people who moved in had cats so it was a good selling point, none of the buyers knew that they existed ! .........They are fantastic and work like a dream.....my cats come in and out but the neighbors cat can't figure why he can't come in too....funny ! So easy to install....you need to cut the shape out of your door first....if you follow instructions , you will be fine. Batteries last for a about a year for 2 cats coming and going.Awesome product
