Long lasting, quality drives.
I prefer to use Western Digital drives in all the computers I have at home, and I recommend them to my computer repair customers. They have a long life, outstanding tools to help you install or maintain the drive, and even diagnostics should your drive go squish. I purchased this for one of my customers since she wanted a drive that was going to last longer than her 18 month old drive made by one of the other guys. Be aware that this is a bare drive, meaning it does not come with a separate disc with the utilities on it. The drivers and utilities can be downloaded easily and free at the Western Digital site

Good fit for the iMac Intel
Ordered by overnight to fix an iMac that seemed to be losing it's mind. Just installed Lion and since then it had been acting very strange. Googled changing a hard drive on the IMac and found all kinds of help on the web. Youtube has several very good videos on changing the hard drive on the Mac so since I have repaired many PC's I decided to give it a shot. Had to open it up a second time because I missed hooking up one of the connections, but it was good after that. Booted up on Snow Leopard and formatted the drive, installed the OS and then updated to Lion. Restored the programs I need from the time machine and now its working great. The hard drive is fast and the price is excellent compared to Newegg. I really pays to be a prime customer on Amazon. I did download and ran Onyx (free and a program you should have) and the hard drive looks good.Western Digital 500 GB Sata 6.0 Gb-s 16 MB Cache 3.5-Inch Internal Bare-oem Drives WD5000AAKX

Western digital helps me again.
I have a 320GB caviar blue, that was running low on space so a upgrade was mandatory. For $40 which is actually the same price I got my 320GB from a retail store, this was a great deal. The hardware installation was pretty straight forward and painless. but keep a few things in mind when buying this product as an upgrade or for a build. when they say bare drive they mean bare drive. You get a box, packaged product and that's it. You will need some screws or a way to secure this drive to your case for a build or a housing to make it an external. Also if this is for a secondary drive (as it was for me) I would download the proper software from WD prior to installing this HDD. Windows (I have 7) will recognize the drive as a disc drive and not a Hard disc drive if you don't have the proper software from the get go. So to avoid having a redundant disc listing make sure you have the WD software. Performance seems solid so far, it only has 40GB of game data on it, but transferring over the games was painless and they launch perfectly. There does not seems to be an audible increase in noise seeing as two drive run now instead of just one and heat difference is also negligible and if this drive performs as good as my 320GB, this is another win from Western Digital.

Good drive at a good price
I'm overall happy with this drive. Western Digital drives typically last a long time for me as long as they have decent cooling. I've only used this particular one for a week. As expected, no problems. Am reviewing it now because it'll probably be quiet a few years before it fails. I've a touch of buyers remorse in that the 1TB drives are starting to really drop in price now. I think they're the best bang for buck at the moment. Such is life. At least it's quiet. I'm typing this review on the very quiet office desktop this drive went into. I can hear crickets outside and a computer in a different room, but can't hear this little PC two feet away. Big hard drive for not so big price :)
I've already had a Western Digital (500 GB) HDD installed in my PC (well it wasn't the same model but the same brand and capacity) All I can say is the item is very good from a very good company. Now between the 2 Hard drives in my desktop I have 1TB of space. Western Digital is a very good brand and if you were to say go to Staples to buy this Hard drive I doubt you would pay less than $70 for it. The hard drive is fast (for the price) and reliable. Also even if you've never installed a hard drive in your PC before it isn't rocket science and it is well worth it. So i would recommend this to anyone who's running out of space and who's other hard drive is about to croak. Overall I am very satisfied with this product and the price (i paid only $37 i believe) , the price is outstanding! 5 years ago this would've cost you $400 or more.Anyway like I said ,if you have ANY doubts about getting this item - DON'T! You will not be disappointed ! ! !

I mean, it's a hard-drive...
This is the first drive I've bought since WD started... color coding their drives. Blue is the lowest... But I don't think most people would see too significant of a difference (unless you got the Veloceraptor). The drive... works like a drive should. My logic is, most PC users these days use laptops. Most laptops HDDs have traditionally been 5400rpm with under 8mb cache. So most PC users will still benefit from the lowest end desktop HDD since it's rotating at 7200 and the cache is 16mb. If you're not an average PC user then you already know that this is basic and run of the mill and is fine for storage but not high-end performance. If you want a significant performance increase from your HDD you'll have to get a Solid State drive (or veloceraptor - though that wouldn't provide as much of an improvement and it would create so much more heat) or a RAID setup. Or hell, Both :) So yeah, 5 stars, it's a hard drive just as a hard-drive should be and for 95% of users it's perfectly fine and WD is a great brand. Your windows performance rating will peak at 5.9 because of the HDD. Only HDDs that will really increase that number are SSDs or raided HDDs.

Solid drive
WD's Caviar line is highly regarded for good reason. The Blue line isn't as fast as the Black, but that's nearly always OK. If you really want a speedy hard drive for general purpose usage, you should be getting an SSD. This is more of a media storage drive. I've been using mine as the boot disk and media storage for my HTPC for four months. This isn't the best use, but it is a cheap use. It works just fine. A better use for drives like this is for media storage without the OS partition, using a smaller SSD for the OS and applications. Remember to use RAID (probably 1 or 5) on the drives if they store any data you don't want to lose. The other two colors are Caviar Red for Network Attached Storage and Caviar Green for low-power usage. If you've purchased hard drives before, you know that they all install pretty much the same easy way.

Just note that it is OEM
I am a first time builder and have had my system up for 3 weeks. In the past, I have had experience with Hitachi hdds and so far, I like the Western Digital more than my old Hitachis. For everything that I use it for (ripping/watching movies and running a VM are the most taxing tasks), the WD performs well. It also appears to be quieter than my old Hitachi, which I moved over to the new system and is being used as a secondary hdd. The only thing I will note is it is bare bones so you don't even get mounting screws or a SATA III cable. Fortunately, my case uses quick release latches for mounting and my motherboard came with a SATA III cable. If there was one thing that it didn't matter to get OEM for my system build, it was this piece of the puzzle. System Build: Cooler Master Elite 430 ASRock Pro3 Z77 Motherboard Intel Core i5 3570k Crucial Ballistix 16gb DDR3-1600 (2x8gb) Western Digital Caviar Blue 500gb Lite-on iHAS324 24x DVDRW Seasonic S12II 430W Bronze

Good Drive (Quite)
I just built a ITX machine and the board had a maximum memory speed of 1333 MHz and contained two memory slots. The motherboard had on-board CPU/GPU. I installed the MB, RAM, and assembled the case with this 500 GB Western Digital HD. I plugged in an external DVD and put a Windows 8 system builder in the drive. Finally I set a cross over cable up to my main PC and set up internet sharing to the LAN Port from my wireless,( a second ad-hoc that gave the build internet connectivity.) I slapped in a new Windows 8 system builder DVD and put in the key and went to dinner. When I came back the system was installed and ready for me to set up an account to use the Windows store. Every driver was installed 100% through the internet or Windows 8 disk! One thing for those that are new to Windows 8, right click the little Metro Screen that pops up where the Start Button used to be, (lower left hand corner) to get to the Control Panel.

Upgrading Is Progress Earned
In today's world, no system should have less than 500GB of storage. In fact, all systems should have at least a TB(1000GB). But, when your computer is almost a decade old, you sympathize. I decided that I wanted to upgrade a Dell Dimension C521 and the HDD(Hard Disk Drive) was my first approach. When you're constantly saving 720p to 1080p video captures and planning on playing a few PC games, you're going to be happy you installed yourself a nice sized playground in your tower. No formatting is necessary. You can just take the old hard drive out and plug the new hard drive in with the same SATA plugs, boot up your system, and proceed to install your OS(Operating System). If you have any troubles, there are literally tons of videos online that walk you through the process of installing an OS. Always do your technology and yourself a favor and upgrade.
