I used to find that our dogs drinking water would get an icky slimy feeling after only a day or so. It bothered me a lot, so I finally purchased the ceramic pagoda water fountain (on sale with an additional coupon from Petco - worth the wait) and haven't regretted it! We have an RO system, as we live in a hard water area. I use the charcoal filters and switch them out once a month, at the same time as these foam filters. After a month the charcoal filter and foam filter has a very slight "fish-tanky" smell if I put it right up to my nose, so honestly it might be better to do the switch every three weeks perhaps, but the water is never slippery feeling. Our dog used to refuse to drink from her water dish when it wasn't perfectly clean (after a day or so), and she hasn't ever stopped drinking from the pagoda fountain with my current cleaning schedule (she used to bark once when we were running water at the sink, to let us know she needed water, so she knows how to tell me when her water isn't fresh lol) I have found that these foam filters do catch any hair, dust, the occasional gnat etc before the water goes through the motor so I am sure that the foam filters will increase the life span of the motor I believe that the charcoal filters keep the water fresh for much longer. I used the fountain a couple of times without the charcoal filters, the first time I ran out, and the water seemed to get slimy again immediately. (I will post this review there too) I top up the water daily and pull it all apart and clean everything once per week religiously. When I clean everything I run water through the charcoal filter and shake it out a few times. I also clean this foam filter really well with hot water, before re-assembling it all. I don't put any parts in the dishwasher, just wash out everything with very hot water (except the motor which I rinse out with cold) Very pleased with this whole set up, and it is well worth the few minutes it takes once a week to clean it, and our dog does drink more water than before. And I feel much, much happier now that it never feels slimy, plus I like the indoor water fountain calming trickle. One comment on the sound though, it does get a lot louder if the water level is low, particularly as we have it on a tiled floor in an open plan kitchen/TV area. The changing sound level helps remind me to top it up so that's probably a good thing! If the water level is no more than 1/2-1" below the edge then the water sound is very zen!

I wouldn't skip on getting this extra filter because it does pick up extra things from the fountain. It always gets up my cat's hair that manges to fall in the water while they're drinking. I change mine every few weeks and rinse inbetween changes.

These are somewhat fragile but so is the original. While cleaning the unit which I do daily, my original one disappeared. Later I found it in 3 pieces scattered across the house but, fortunately, all of it was found. Next time I'll keep a better eye on it when I'm cleaning the unit. Please don't let pets or children play with these because pieces could be easily ingested which may require a trip to the ER. The material is similar to rough plastic scrubbies or sponges although it's not as dense. That said, this product replaces the original one exactly. Buy one to use and hide the other one. The manufacturer recommends replacing these every 2 to 4 weeks. I rinse mine well every cleaning but it never looks dirty although the manufacturer cited pet slobber as the reason to replace these often. The unit uses this filter and a second charcoal filter. Some of my cats like it, some don't. My dog has no use for it so we keep it on our cats' food table. We think it reminds him of taking a bath.

These are the correct, official filters for the PetSafe fountains. I have the pagoda-style fountain, and it was very easy to replace it and toss the old one out. Nothing special to know about these, from my experience. You can see when it's kind of dirty/dingy and needs to be replaced. My fountain wasn't working well until I replaced this filter and the carbon filter.

Bought a pagoda fountain for my cat who likes to drink from the faucet. I need replacement filters to keep the fountain clean and running well, or I find him in the sink licking the faucet. While I can wash the fountain and rinse the filters a few times, they do need to be replaced frequently. As a result, I need to keep these in stock, in my home for when I need to change to a fresh one. These filters were perfect fit and are identical to the filters my fountain came with. They help keep my furry friend out of the sink and drinking from his fountain like he should be.

I thought I could get away with not using these little foam things for my cat's water fountain ... boy, was I wrong! I ended up having to buy a new pump :( I have 3 cats that use the fountain and the foam really helps filter out hair and slimy saliva from the pump. My new pump works great now that I regularly change them. I even wash them and reuse them!

I just love our pet fountain, we have the stainless steel model (I had the plastic one but it was much harder to clean) these are a must have and really help keep the debris out of the water. They come in dif. sizes I did not realize that... This is the smaller version but I had gotten the larger one before so I use them both, I just place the bigger one around the smaller one and then around the pump and it seems to work even better at keep crap out of the pump and water.

I was skeptical about how necessary these would be, probably a waste of money. Then I tried them, they are great. Yes, you can get along without them, I did for years. But, why would you want to? They make maintenance cleaning so much faster and easier. Also the water flow remains steady because it prevents the intake from getting obstructed by debris including hair during shedding seasons.

I have placed several orders for this 2-pack here on Amazon and if interested in seeing the price trends I show that information below. Unlike a lot of products, the price on this has trended downward over the past few years and I'm not unhappy about that. I get about three months worth of use per foam filter for the Drinkwell Pagoda fountain as my cats leave very little debris behind in the bowl. I have stopped using my Drinkwell 360 Pet Fountain purchased for the dogs because the fountain did not have the capacity we needed and the dogs would leave behind enough debris that it required a significant amount of upkeep and maintenance. I now just clean and refill a dog water bowl several times a day and feel that's the route to go for my dogs. As of my June 2016 order there is no longer an instruction insert in the package these come in so the scan I am uploading is from my December 2015 order. The other four photos I have uploaded show side-by-side comparisons of the four panels of the package and are provided by way of illustrating the recent package design changes. The Drinkwell design from my December 2015 order is shown on the left side of each photo and the new PetSafe design on the right. The foam filter itself has not changed. It appears to me that PetSafe is downplaying the Drinkwell brand and now calling this filter the Petsafe "#5 Foam Filter". I am guessing they discontinued the Lotus model as it is no longer named on the box panel and has been replaced with the Sedona model. $3.99 June 10, 2016 $4.69 December 21, 2015 $5.44 October 21, 2015 $4.49 June 4, 2015 $6.05 July 31, 2014
