Best toy investment ever
We purchased this over a year ago for our 3 year old boy's birthday and he's used it almost daily ever since. At first he needed the help of his big brothers to decide where to put theW track pieces in a way that made sense, but now he's enjoying designing his own layouts and is proud that he can click them together himself. We actually decorated his birthday cake with it, which made a really fun surprise when we drove it around the cake. He still talks about that regularly. It comes with a nice selection of extras like signs, etc., which are nice b/c it give them something to manipulate and change around. The favorite is the gate which stops the train until they raise it by hand, which keeps them involved. We did not put the stickers on anything because we kind of liked it simpler and open to imaginative interpretation and he never felt anything was missing. As parents, what we really like is that it is one of the most durable toys we've ever bought. Yay, VTech! We have 6 kids so we don't even bother to buy things that aren't "industrial strength". It seems almost impossible to find toys these days that don't break immediately! The second thing we look for after durability is long term pay-off. In other words, once the novelty wears off is there enough to actually DO with the toy that keeps their interest? Toys that do everything themselves become boring space-killers FAST. This one is a firm win in this department. Right away we loved that there are two switches on the train- one to let it go itself, and one where you can push it (but it still makes the sounds). But out favorite feature is the hand-crank on the hill! This requires child activity every time the train goes on that piece! The crank requires them to practice manual dexterity at just the right level of challenge for a tot of 3-4, too. GREAT FEATURE! This is one of the best investments we've ever made for our kids. I was surprised that the older kids have trouble keeping their hands off it. I've even caught the 13 year old at it (don't tell :). The 7 year old clearly loves "helping" his little bro with it and it has been a great way for them to socialize and develop their relationship. I don't see the 7 year old outgrowing his love for it anytime soon, so it can clearly satisfy a large age range. In fact, our biggest problem is that now we have to buy another one for our 2 year old girl b/c she keeps taking the train and tearing apart the track. But again, with any other toy I feel she'd have broken it by now, especially considering how they clean it up by throwing the pieces across the room into a wooden crate! I studied the other products in the Go Go Smart Wheels line before buying this one and feel this one offers by far the best payoff. The other sets seem to all be lacking in terms of the number pieces you can manipulate (like with this there are just enough track pieces to allow different configurations). It seemed to have the most activities that kids actually have to do themselves which keep their interest, too. I thought by now we'd be wanted different sets, but we're going to go with duplicate train set for Christmas b/c that's what all 3 of the little guys want and the other sets seem to be lacking in track size and high-interest features. The only think I don't like about it is the noises, but I guess that's what sells toys (typically to people without kids!!!) I don't hate them like I do with most toys, but they make this toy less valuable as a distraction for when siblings are doing schoolwork. We still use it for that b/c it keeps them happy for a long time (1-2 hours!) but it does interrupt us. All I could ask for is a sound free switch for the pieces that make the train talk, and another train set with different but similar features.

Super fun toy for 3 year old. Please see uploaded photos for a good track layout
I've read several reviews where the customer couldn't figure out a how to build a track that uses all the pieces included in the set. I believe that I've found a solution and posted pictures in the customer photo upload area. My layout uses all the pieces, and it also enables the train to complete a circuit around the track and hit all of the SmartPoints without manual intervention. I have a 3 year-old son who loves this train. He is able to turn the crank to help the train up the ramp just fine. The train is able to turn corners, and does not get stuck on any track pieces (maybe other reviewers got lemons?). I think that this set is well worth the price, and is a lot of fun to build. I don't think that a 1-2 year old would be able to build the tracks, but they would probably have fun pushing the train around the track or watching it move on its own. It is possible to disengage the motor by pushing the button in the smokestack (therefore making it a push toy). Similarly, if your train isn't moving, push the button again to re-engage the motor to have the train run the tracks on its own. My 3 year-old doesn't have the patience to put together the track on his own yet, but I'm hoping that he will when he gets older. My only criticisms of this set are that the instructions could provide better diagrams for the various track configurations, and that they should include a few more red curved directional pieces (the ones that insert into the orange cross track pieces). The diagrams for the track layouts are a bit difficult to read, and the photos included in the manual are way too small to see all the details. Even so, it's not rocket science to figure out how to build a track configuration that will work. I may order a few more red pieces from vtech's website (under "Customer Support", go to "Order replacement parts"): vtechkids.com For those of you who have misplaced the manual, it's also online at the vtech's website (search for "go go train" and you will see a tab for downloading the manual PDF file)

Fantastic toy!
Just a really great toy. Our little one wasn't really able to play with it appropriately until he was about 2 years old, and he still can't necessarily turn the crank to get the train up the "hill" (your child might of course have different abilities), but it doesn't really matter. He loves building the track with us...and loves playing with the train. One note - we also purchased a extra set of plain tracks from VTech. You'll find those sets when you search on Amazon. They are somewhat critical for having better connections to other playsets (the garage, etc.), but they are not built with the same quality...nor do they have the grooves, so the train can't drive on those. Obviously I'm not rating them here, but I wanted to mention it, since you might consider purchasing. And you still might want to...VTech really just needs to make a change to that particular item.

Great interactive toy!
I was truly surprised at how interactive this set is. I never dreamed our 2 1/2 year old would move around and get so much exercise while playing with it. I was concerned about that before purchasing it; I didn't want something that would encourage him to just sit and watch. With this set, he is constantly getting up and down, stretching, turning, and even running around the track to beat the train to the gates. Our padded 8' x 12' area rug in the family room is perfect for this purpose and can be see from the kitchen so mom can keep an eye on him while cooking and cleaning. This toy has turned out to be his favorite. Not only does he love to help the train go around the track by putting gates up and down, trying to turn the crank (which we must help with), loading the cargo, etc. but his very favorite thing to do is put the track together himself. He will play for an hour or two putting it together and taking it apart, all the while happier than a pig in mud, lol! At bedtime, we literally have to take it away, which he's not too happy about. There are several configuration options with this track and the hand cranked ramp does not have to be included in all of them, which can encourage independent play for the young ones. I am purchasing more vehicles and the add-on tracks simply because he enjoys this toy so much. Way to go, Vtech!

Perfect as a first train set for a toddler
I was initially contemplating purchasing a larger train table set after seeing how nicely my son played with it in a store. However, I am so happy that I opted for this instead. My 15 month old had been playing with it for the last month and I have seen him step all over it, throw tracks, chew on process and soul juice all over it. It has miraculous held up really well, especially considering how affordable it is. I bought this as a distraction so I could pack up our apartment before our move, but he has played with it every single day since I got it for him. I have figured out that the best configuration is a simple large loop. This way he does in the middle and doesn't mess up the tracks. Overall, it's a wonderful toy, definitely a great first train set for a small toddler. It's a lot of pieces, we don't use all of them yet since he hasn't been interested in assembling tracks. He primarily likes to watch the train go round.

Hours and hours of fun!
My 4 1/2 year old spends hours playing with her train set! She enjoys building new tracks and manually rolling the train up the hill. The train itself has some serious power behind it! The wheels have this incredible grippy material on them that keeps it moving all around them tracks, even if there's some dust or something on the tracks and the batteries last a long time (sometimes we'll take the train off the tracks, put it on the floor and let the cat chase it around the living room, that's really fun!) I wish they included a couple more single sided corners because we run out of those every time we play trains but other than that this is an excellent train set that's durable, fun, bright and colorful and best of all, something the whole family can play together!

If you are getting this as a gift get a second train to make the gift even better for parents
So worth it. My toddler loves this toy and especially the train that drives itself..he lets it go everywhere in the house. Only bummer is the train that comes with it is the only car that drives itself...all the rest you can buy you have to push. The train doesnt last very long..we are on our third one now but my boy loves it so we keep getting more. You have to go on the vtech website under replacement parts and order another train. I suggest you do it now cause yours will eventually quit and your kid will want a new one asap. If you are getting this as a gift get a second train to make the gift even better for parents. PS.. we use this train on the little tykes table ansd its fits perfectly on it! Little Tikes Easy Adjust Play Table

Great Toy for Creative Play
This is a prized toy at Grandma's house, which we will get out only at certain times. Both my 10 month-old and 4-year-old enjoy this track set. The train has a little motor to pull itself around the track, and the smart points call by name the train and additional vehicles, and plays cute tunes. We have additional play sets, as well as additional cars and they all work well together. The train station set is a little more complex than some of the other Go Go Smart Wheels playsets, and really requires an adult to help set up the track configuration(s). It comes with some suggested configurations, so I let the 4-year old pick one out and I help him put it together. After a while, he takes it apart and then does his own thing - great for teaching kids to think outside the box, follow direction, and creative play. If you get this, you should know it comes with a bunch of 'stickers' that go on the track that you'll need to spend some time on. If you prefer something less complicated VTech has some simpler and smaller sets to get started with (they are all very cute).

Wonderful, but buy some rechargeable batteries
Bought this for my 2 year daughters birthday. It has been such a hit. Great for her little hands to put the tracks together and play with the train. Love that the train can move on it's own or be directed by hand. I can definitely see us buying other sets in the future. The train runs out of batteries REALLY fast though. We went through two sets in the first week. So I recommend rechargeable batteries. Because even though it doesnt get played with as much as it did the first week, it is still a very popular toy and runs out of battery once a week or every other week. So yeah. Save yourself some money and get rechargeable from the beginning.

Whats not to love?!
We absolutely love this product! We have this set and one other vtech set like it and they all connect together wonderfully. The great thing about it is that if you lose the instructions on how to properly build it that it doesn't really matter because it works anyway you want to build it. You can use all the pieces or just a few pieces and make it how you want to make it. My 2yr old son can easily connect and disconnect the pieces and he can use his imagination and create something that he wants to. The only complaint that I have is that it only comes with one little red piece that connects to the orange pieces, I will note it in a photo. The train that comes with it can run by itself or can easily be pushed. There are stations in the set that the train can roll over and it will talk & light up. You will find a ramp that is hand cranked to move the train up it to the higher level of the track. Many other great features are included in this set. This is one toy that I know he will want to play with for years as my 8 year old son likes to play with it too. I would definitely recommend this toy to everyone!
