Excellent Amplifier
I was able to purchase this receiver for $150 and it is easily worth over that price. The sound is amazing hooked up to an old pair of pioneer speakers and streamed through a ChromeCast audio for music or HDMI for movies. The amp is crystal clear and the auto calibration is a really helpful tool when setting it up in a location where speakers need to be in weird locations (like a dorm room). At the $250 price tag, it may still be worth it but I would definitely give it a little more thought before buying it. At the $150 price tag, I would buy it immediately because it may not stay on sale for long and is easily worth this price.

Superb stereo, friends are jealous!
Very good receiver, I installed T50 Folk audio speakers as my front speakers and JBL book shelf speakers as my surround sound and the sound is unbelievable, had to caliber the treble and the bass to a maximum and bought a powered JBL sub woofer and it turned to be the best stereo I ever had, I have 3 Sony home theaters at home with small speakers for every every room but I decided to try a receiver and multi speakers in my newly built bonus room , I’m glad I bought this Sony receiver , sounds expensive and I bought a used one without manual for $ 129.00 , best used product I ever purchased. I spent about $600.00 with the speakers from Amazon including a Folk audio center speaker. I’m not regretting it because the sound is like a millions bucks to me, nice treble, bass , easy to operate and I never read any manual and I’m a lady. I’m glad I don’t have any neighbor and I live in a wooded property because my new room rocks , if I lived in an apartment , I could have been evicted because this is a very powerful stereo , I wish I had it years ago. I listen to Spotify internet radio and it sounds like CD crisp bass and treble , don’t wanna live my music room as much as possible but I have to work long hours and do some gardening. I bought a Sharp 4K big screen TV to match this receiver to watch movies and it sounds so great. Life is good with this receiver!

Can't beat this for the price!
This is the bargain of the year in my opinion. If you are looking for a good quality, "no frills" receiver that has excellent audio quality you can't beat this for $150. Plenty of volume for small - medium home theater rooms (maybe large ones depending upon your desired listening level). I have a room that is about 500 sq ft and it drives my 5.1 surround system beautifully. If it was any louder and the neighbors would be leaving town!. We use it for movies and music and it performs very very well across all genres. Plenty of effect options to get the sound you want. Note that this is 5.2 (not 7.X) and it does not have Bluetooth, WiFi, Atmos or native 4K support. If you need these features spend more. If you don't need them this is the deal of the year for a powerful, great sounding amp!

Great Reciever!
Perfect receiver for my needs. I ordered Yamaha speakers about a year ago for my old reciever. I hooked those up with no problem. Setting it up was a little odd. Had to look up every menu option as I came to it. Which is usually what I do whenever I get new tech. But overall the sound quality, the function, all the different settings. I'm very satisfied. Fortunately for me I don't own anything 4K so that's not a big deal. I have my PS3, PS4, Firestick, and a digital converter hooked up to it currently. All that is going to my ceiling mounted projector via 50ft HDMI cable. No problems with lag, or signal dropping out. I love this receiver and I'm pretty sure you will too.

It does what it says it can do and sounds great doing it.
You might say when I bought this I paid some for the name, maybe so a little but I also know what I'm getting from Sony and they'll stand behind it. The setup with the auto calibrating feature really helps with the balance because it senses where each speaker is. Plus there are quite a few settings preconfigured, especially under the music heading. I have 2 front side and rear speakers along with a self powered bottom projection sub from Optimus, the old radio shack brand. I had to replace the center channel after a weeks worth of reading reviews I bought one by MTX. This amp is getting the most out of these speakers since I first bought them 20 yrs ago. You might day this amp isn't that sophisticated but so what the sound is what counts and if but this same one again.

Nice simple receiver with great sound!!!
The Sony STRDH550 is a very nice basic 5.2 surround sound receiver. Have it connected to a Definitive Technology BP8040ST (towers), CS8040HD (center), and SR8040BP (surrounds). The sound is amazing both listening to music and watching movies. I decided to go with this receiver because I my home's layout is not 7 channel friendly, Plus, I didn't need any apps because everything connected to it is already app enabled. My only complaints about this receiver are in the on screen display (OSD). The OSD is simple/functional but the layout is somewhat poorly thought out. Menu items that should be on the top layer are somewhat buried. For instance, the Pure Direct feature. In the menu its Home > Sound Effects > Pure Direct > on/off. This feature should actually be on the home menu or, better yet, on the remote. Additionally, this receiver is not HDR compatible. this isn't a big deal for me right now considering I don't have any HDR compatible equipment.

Would purchase again
We like this receiver. It took a while to figure out how to access the menus (hint, you must connect this to your TV using the supplied HDMI out and the TV screen acts as the [only] display screen for menu information). It makes sense since this is a home theater receiver and is meant to be used in conjunction with a television but the instructions provided with the unit were not as clear as I would have expected from a manufacturer as prevalent as Sony.

Nice Home Theater Unit
I needed a replacement amp/receiver/home theater unit without concern over 4K and found this one. At $148 it is a silly good buy! Plugged it in, set the supplied mic, ran the onscreen setup and I was DONE in 10 minutes. I really like that it passes the cable box signal out to the TV while in stand by mode! I've got everything plugged into the receiver with one cable going to the TV. It takes care of passing whatever signal I call for. Sound is terrific and the remote is dead simple. I did look at the online 300+ page manual but that's all I did. Look at it. Straight out of the box this is set to go without the monster manual. As regards the complaints about the onscreen display being less than sexy: Seriously, how many times will you be bringing it up once you have the set up done? Never? By this amp and don't listen to the nit pickers.

Perfect AV receiver for PS4, Projectors, and more!
I can't believe the price of this A/V receiver--it's truly amazing. I almost pulled the trigger on it's 7.2 cousin at roughly $50 more, but I really only have room for my current speaker setup, which is 5.1. Install is a breeze with excellent terminals for your speaker wire, and RCA outs for up to two subs. The automatic tuning/config using the included microphone was interesting to say the least, and really did quite well in regards to tuning the system. Its measurements of the speaker distance to the mic where totally accurate. It does offer quite a lot in terms of manual tuning as well, but I did not have to adjust anything except the level of my sub as I tend to lean on the side of more bass than usual. In terms of video, it handles my needs with ease. My system consists of a PS4, Roku stick, and an HD projector. You can set this to automatically detect and switch to inputs as they're powered on, but I like to manually set my input, which is a breeze thanks to its intuitive remote. All of this runs from the receiver to my projector--absolutely no issues. Sound and video are perfect IMO and I often get comments on how beautiful my system looks and sounds. At the heart of this is the Sony receiver. Highly recommended!

1st timer for a Sony Receiver and we love it!! EZ to setup.
Bought this as a replacement for our Denon receiver which cost us 300 more that stopped working after only 7 years. We have only receivers bought 15 and 20 years ago that are still running. So disappointed in the Denon products now. Although there is no book that comes with this, it is easy to set up, unliked the Denon that took about a day. The sound is amazing and better than the Denon. Much better bass in it We have this setup to our Sony Bravia TV and Klipsch speakers. Do not hesitate to buy. We do not have a 4K TV which I see are the reviews that have given this receiver lower ratings so I cannot comment on that. For the price of $201 for a Sony product I do not see how you can go wrong.
