Very happy with this machine. I haven't sewn for years, and that was on a basic-stitch vintage Brother portable, so I went with a Brother machine. I watched the DVD and read the reviews and manual before using. I like the machine very much. Stitch selection is easy. Unlike some reviews, I find that the foot pedal operates like it should once you get used to the correct angle for your foot and/or the shoes you are wearing, just like with car pedals. I also find the light to be completely adequate, so perhaps those with complaints about the light have a defective part. I love the thread cutter location. Threading from the spool down to the needle takes practice since the take-up lever is recessed into the machine. Winding the bobbin is easy, as is threading it. My model has the quick-set bobbin, which simplifies it nicely. My machine also has the automatic needle threader, which I have not used and which looks very complicated in the manual and is not adequately demonstrated on the DVD. For the time it takes to use it, it's easier to thread the needle manually, even using the handy old-time manual threader if necessary. Maybe a U-tube video would be helpful, but it still seems like a contraption I don't need and would remove if I knew how. The reverse lever is positioned well and works great. If I could change one thing, it would be the location of the presser foot lever from the right underside of the machine, which requires you to remove your right hand from the fabric. The old Brother machine located this lever on the back of the head of the machine, and you could quickly flip it up/down with your left hand while holding your fabric in place with your right. Also, I wish the lever was metal and not plastic. The carry "handle" is not really a handle, or at least not one I would feel secure in using by itself with one hand. Overall, the stitch quality is perfect. I've given 5 stars in spite of the few criticisms because I would buy this machine again and would recommend it if asked.

I used to sew as a kid but I was never that great. I had a dinky little machine that would always jam up and I was certain it was because I'm an idiot. Guess what, I'm not an idiot. I just had a crappy sewing machine. This machine is decidedly not crappy. The only time it has jammed was due to a little light user error (ok, maybe I am an idiot). This sewing machine has also done wonders for my social life. I make cool stuff for my friends and family and that makes me undeniably more tolerable to be around.

I live in a small NY apt. and the machine was a little larger than expected, but not overly so. It fits out of the way when not in use and works just fine on a coffee table. It is much more durable than a "portable" or "mini" machine, which is great as my 13 year-old will be using it too, and has plenty of stitch options for our use. There is a "how to" video, but I wanted to get to a project ASAP, so just skimmed the included manual and it was similar enough to other machines I've owned that getting started was quick and easy. I purchased a sewing kit that included thread and a magnifying glass in order to thread the dreaded needle with my almost 50 eyes. After I finished my first project, I read further and discovered that there is a "needle threader" attached and ready to go...LIFE CHANGER!!! We have already completed 3 projects in less than a week and I owe it to this nifty little gadget that somehow escaped me when I purchased it. Not sure if this would be suitable for a full time sewer or quilter, but for us DIY crafters, it is THE BOMB!!

I love this machine! I took a very basic sewing class about 10 years ago and I was intimidated to try again but this machine is so easy to use. Love the needle threader, the extra feet and automatic bobbin drop in feature. The stitching is nice and even. All over it is a great machine for beginners. Only thing is it’s not great for super thick Fabrics like jeans etc

I guess I took a chance buying this machine when tere were no reviews on it, as it just recently was released by Brother. However, maybe that is what drew me to choose this machine as well. I spent alot of time reading many reviews for many machines and it just became overwhelming. They all had good and bad reviews. Then I saw this, and it was within my price range as a beginner sewer. I wanted a decent machine, but didn't want to spend alot of money since I want to make sure my intrest in learning to sew is something I actually stick with. At the same time, I wanted a machine that would be able to grow with me as I learned, and thought this would be a good one.And it didn't have any reviews to clous my perceptions. Well it arrived yesterday, The dvd is a great help and I was able to get the machine set up and begin some simple sewing on it. The machine runs smoothly, and has many features I like. I think I will enjoy using this machine for quite awhile. So for now..I am impressed and really am glad I bought this sewing machine!

i knew next to nothing about sewing machines until my wife bought this and i borrowed it from her. i spent all of about 20 minutes reading the manual, and after that minor introduction i was able to repair a huge hole in a pair of pants AND to custom-fabricate a sleeve to direct mail from the garage door mail slot into a box located a couple feet away. if you're a beginner looking to get a base knowledge of sewing and to have broad capabilities without spending a ton of money, this is DEFINITELY for you. i can't recommend it enough. with 20+ stitch patterns (including button holes) and a SUPER easy to use threading mechanism, this thing is the way to go. highly recommended.

I bought this because I needed a light weight machine to use when doing rag rugs. I read a lot of reviews and decided on this machine. I decided to make a pillowcase for a first project on it. I always use a 1/4 seam allowance with a 1/4 inch foot which this machine doesn’t come with so what I did is put the needle all the way to the right and with the included foot was able to get a scant 1/4 inch so I was pleased with that. I know a lot of people have said the light is not bright enough but I think it’s just fine. I watched the video on you tube and had it up and going in minute. The accessories where in a baggy at the top of the machine when it was unpacked so there is no way you can misss them. I definitely use the manual . Especially when changing stitches so I can see what the recommended length and width of the stitch should be. Im used to sewing with a computerized machine that pretty much sets everything once you chose your stitch. This machine really feels old school to me because you have to really learn how to set your stitches for your fabric to get it right. The only problem I’ve had so far is having a spool of thread wrapping around the bottom of the spool pin while sewing. I used a different spool and the problem went away but really I shouldn’t have to. The spools were the normal size but the holes must have been a different diameter. My husband cut out a circle from cardboard poked a hole in it with a screw driver and I put that on top of the spool of thread and that seems to help the spool not bounce and the thread from my other spool is now working fine. So far I would say this is a great travel or beginner machine. I will be updating my review in about a month to see how it’s held up. It’s just important to remember it’s an entry level machine and your getting what you paid for. Having said that I still expect it to be durable and last for several years . PROS : Easy to set up Drop in bobbin works great Has 3 needle positions Very light machine Has more stitches than other machines in the same price range CONS: Spool can bounce on spool pin when sewing at higher speeds Foot pedal is very cheap and slides all over the floor if you don’t put something under it Accessorie tray is a description but that’s all. It’s really worthless and won’t hold anything. It is also a little hard to get open. Feed dogs cannot be lowered Screwdriver included is hard for me to use

Pros: 1 Built-in easy needle threader 2 Top drop-in bobbin 3 Includes instructional DVD 4 Comes with 6 sewing feet 5 LED light at work area 6. Price ( I paid USD 99) Cons: Does not come with case or cover. Final thoughts: I wanted to buy a good quality, simple to use and an affordable sewing machine, Brother XM2701 fits the bill. Brother has included a DVD which helped me setup the machine in less than 30 minutes. So far I have no problem with this machine.

Works good for a beginner like me. Just a old guy trying to hem some pants and fix some hole in favorites shirts. Lol

I have never used a sewing machine in my life until I bought this. To put that in perspective, I'm 42 years old and a father of 2. When I told my wife I was going to buy a sewing machine, she looked at me like I was nuts. Which, to be fair, might be totally accurate, but I have no regrets about this purchase. I bought this because I hate throwing stuff away: pants that could be hemmed, knees that can be patched, whatever. Clothes are expensive, and sewing by hand is tedious. This machine comes with a great DVD that I watched once and promptly threw away. I threw it away because basically you can watch the same video on youtube without having to fiddle with a remote. I found it a lot easier to just search for "Brother sewing machine instruction video" and watch Brother's video on a tablet sitting right next to my machine. And let me say this, at first, I was pretty worried. Bobbins? What's a bobbin? Feet? Sewing machines are pretty complicated, but the instructional video was very good. I didn't know *why* I was threading the thread the places I was, but once I got it done, I sewed my first stitch! I won't say it was the cleanest job in the world, but I hemmed a pair of pants in a totally serviceable manner. After my second pair, I was rolling. I changed the thread without even looking at the video: new bobbin and all. That's how simple this device is: a totally non-sewing 42 year old can learn it in under 30 minutes. The stuff I sewed held strong and eventually even got to the point where it looked sharp (which is more a reflection on my lack of skill than any problem with the machine). I know, I'm not doing anything complicated here. I'm not making my own clothes or using really complicated stitches, but I think this machine will work for the overwhelming majority of the tasks I'll see in my household. I get that this machine wasn't made for me (the purple floral pattern is a pretty good hint), but I don't think any guy should be afraid of learning to sew. It's a great skill, and this is a great machine to start with.
