This trimmer works really well. I have an acre and the 5 amp battery lasts the entire yard. I keep it in the low setting for the majority of time because that is all that is needed. Sometimes flip it to high for tall stuff. Not as strong as my gas Stihl but that is a pain to use being gas and noisy. It is so nice to just grab the Dewalt and go. I hate trimming but between the Dewalt and the gas I opt for the brushless quiet battery one. I find I will trim more often than I would with the gas just because I hated the chore of the messy noisy gas one.

I have this unit, and use it for around-the-house trim work. I can clean around the entire house, both small porches, 6 trees, the road sign, and my mailbox, and my battery has used 2/3 of it's capacity. Does tend to get bogged down by larger shrubbery, but Dewalt makes a heavier duty unit that should work better on those. Best part about this is no gasoline/oil mixture lying around, no leaking when you set it down on hills, and the only thing you smell like when you come inside is sweat and grass, not exhaust. The only thing I wish this had (and this is a small wish for how awesome this product is) is a way to shut the battery off to the unit completely. The safety is nice, and works in most situations, but I've caught myself picking this up and accidentally setting it off in my haste. Would be nice to kill the battery's connection if you're going to be moving it to avoid accidental activations, but again, for a product I'm this happy with, I can't complain too much. So far, my shop is a Dewalt shop. Maybe my shed will be as well!

I was afraid it would be under powered and skeptical about battery life. It has hi and low mode. I use low to trim along chain-link fence and it does not rip the line off at that speed, which is awesome! I can trim one side of 1/3rd acre of fence, 13 trees, around house, and kids play equipment 1.5 times on one charge. In the hi setting, it has all the power you need for heavy weed stalks. I think the 40 amp trimmer would be good for heavy clearing but for the average Joe this 20 amp trimmer is all you need.

I purchased this based on hating having to always fix the gas powered trimmers every time I needed to use it. It was infuriating! Plus my husband is a carpenter and his tool box is full of Dewalt so I figured it must be a durable brand and I could always steal his batteries if needed. This has been the single most awesome yard tool that I have ever purchased. I have had it for 6 months using roughly two to four times a months. The battery is amazing and it takes jobs with the same gusto as the gas powered trimmer. I have a bad habit of letting areas of my yard get over grown before doing any trimming and this trimmer eats through like nothing. And I am talking some thick weeds and I have been known to use it to trim back azaleas and other woody stemmed bushes. I show it no mercy and it hasn’t disappointed! It is very lightweight and I (5’2 with no muscle muscle what so ever) have no problem using for extended periods of time. My 10 year old is even able to use safely without much trouble. Husband says the changing of string is just as aggravating as any trimmer (but he is a dude so it’s probably because he isn’t following the directions).

Had this for about three months. Used it a handful of times and everything has been fine so far. Pros Lightweight Gets solid run time out of the 5.0 Ah battery it came with. Never had to run it for more than 10-15 minutes and it's done fine, even when it wasn't all the way charged. I'm sure if you had 30+ minutes of heavy duty work to do it would take its toll. Power on high is good, little weak on low setting. Low setting is nice when you're trimming against anything you don't want to mark up and it will still cut the weeds/grass. I"m 6'2" and it'd comfortable to hold and use. Don't have to hunch over at all. Feeds string well. Easy to refill Cons Balance is a little weird. Head is heavy but you get used to it. Cut path is a little small but it feeds string nicely. Haven't had an issue yet, and hopefully won't, but I could see where the motor on the head of the unit could get a lot of junk in it. The thing that mad me most hesitant in reading reviews was people saying it started grinding and quit. I put the air gun on the compressor and blow everything out of that part of the machine real good when I'm done to make sure nothing is getting trapped down in there. Shouldn't have to but I'd rather be proactive. Not sure if it's working but time will tell. Overall if you are the "average American" (have a yard of roughly an acre or less, trim around the house, fence, kids swing set, etc...) this weed eater should be fine for you. I have my yard set up so I don't have to do a ton of trimming so it doesn't get heavy use and I think a lot of people might fall into that category. I can throw the battery in and go, not messing with gas, choking, priming, smelling like fuel, etc... If you're going to be clearing large areas of heavy weeds and grass, on a regular basis, or you spend more than 30 minutes trimming every time you mow then I'd look elsewhere. This will be capable of doing the occasionally big job but I don't think it would hold up over the long haul.

For the first time in my life I wish I actually had more yard to weed-eat. This trimmer is a pleasure to use and I should have bought one a long time ago. It seems like I was purchasing a new gas powered trimmer yearly, while constantly worrying about maintenance, which gas can had the 2-cycle mix in it, doesn't matter cause they're both empty and I have to drive to the store only to come home and pull on a string for 30 minutes until either the string or my arm broke. I only have bad memories of gas powered trimmers but I was also stubborn with my thoughts of battery trimmer = sissy man tool. Geez was I wrong. This thing has power that I didn't think could be pulled from a little battery pack and it lasts a lot longer than I anticipated. The efficiency of lithium ion these days is incredible. It is so nice just to walk to my shed, grab the trimmer and go. It's way quieter than gas, doesn't shake as bad and turns on/off with the push of a button. This is a no-brainer for those that are on the fence. Honestly I would have paid more than the asking price knowing what I know now. Grab one and don't look back.

Having owned only gasoline powered trimmers I was skeptical as to whether cordless was the way to go. I am no longer skeptical. This machine is a beast. The one drawback I see so far is the lack of balance. The head placed quite a load on your lead hand. I will try to relocate the handle, but I would recommend buying a 6AH or bigger Battery to counterweight the head, and fashioning a shoulder strap, otherwise, I am impressed, this machine has plenty of torque to tackle most trimming tasks.

I have only used this once so far and will provide my initial thoughts. I will come back to update my review as time progresses and potential issues with the trimmer arise. Beware that this tool has 4 variants that have been produced. Type 1, Type 2, Type 3 and Type 4. All Types fall under the DCST920 model designation. The Types represents changes/improvements in motor design and, most notably, a changed line feed head with Type 4. A lot of negative reviews mention that the new head of the Type 4 (newest type) is inferior and difficult to reload properly with new line. The model I received is a Type 4 and so far I have had no issue with the line head. However, issues may arise when I need to refill the head with new line (will update if that is the case). I believe the old feed head (part # 90599025) can be purchases separate and replace the new style. Another note, I believe the Type 1 had motor issues, so avoid that Type if possible. You can determine the Type of your model by checking the Manufacturer plate on the head of the trimmer (where the battery goes in). This is the only way to determine the Type as far as I know (so when purchasing you may not know what Type will you get unless the seller checks for you). The trimmer is fairly lightweight and easy to handle. However, I am not very tall and do find the long length of the trimmer makes it somewhat cumbersome to wield. The trimmer seems to have plenty of power with the included 5Ah battery. I used the trimmer for about 45 minutes on the "Lo" setting before running out of juice. For most yards/projects, this is plenty of time. Some users complained that the guard is too small. While it is quite small, it seemed to provide adequate protection during my usage thus far. I do believe a larger protection guard is available for purchase from DeWalt (part # N496261). Overall I currently give this trimmer 5 stars. While it is pricey, I believe the investment is worth it, especially if you are already invested in the DeWalt tool line. The convenience of having the same battery used for a multitude of tools cannot be overstated (and not needing half a dozen different chargers).

I had been struggling with an old gas powered string trimmer for several years and finally went with a rather ineffective 18 volt battery model (not Dewalt). It cam e with two batteries and a charger, but a full charge on each battery only allowed me to do half of the trimming around the perimeter of the house and flower beds, then it was a wait until the next day after charging the batteries before finishing the job. Since I own several Dewalt 20v tools and have multiple batteries, I decided to take the plunge and go with the Dewalt trimmer with 5AH battery and charger. I could not be happier with the performance and quality. I have a one acre property and, the 5AH battery will do it all with one bar remaining when finished. Since I have knocked down the areas that had not been touched all summer, I can now concentrate on maintaining everything in about 45 minutes without stopping to change out multiple batteries. I love this tool, but it does take some getting used to and not constantly bumping out new line accidentally. This is basically a lawn trimmer and is not made for heavy weeds and tall grass. It probably could do it, but the time required would be prohibitive. Additionally, tall grasses tend to wrap around the cutting head and must be removed before continuing. I have reduced a two day several hour job down to 30-45 minutes.

Having trouble with my 11 year old gas trimmer, I was looking at some of the newer technology battery trimmers. I really wanted the 40V model after reading the reviews on here and considering I have a 1.5 acre rural lot. I decided to try the 20V model because of the price. The battery had two bars out of the box and took approximately 30 minutes to fully charge. My expectations weren't real high considering I had some heavy trimming to do. Well I must say I was surprised and impressed. I used the low speed mode for battery conservation, but that was really all I needed. I trimmed a lot of grass that was 12" high and slightly damp with no trouble. After trimming all that was needed, I kept going to areas that hadn't been mowed yet just to see how long it would last. After I was tired of trimming the battery still had a bar left ready to keep going. I couldn't believe how much I had trimmed and didn't need another battery. I am also impressed with the Dewalt line that came with the trimmer. With all the trimming I only had to advance the line twice and probably only needed to do it once. The first time I just had to try it since I am used to using so much line with my other trimmer. This was trimming around wooden and chain link fence, concrete and rock walls as well. I am glad I didn't spend the extra money on the 40V now. If the battery life gets even better like everyone says, I don't see a need for a second battery. I would definitely recommend this trimmer. I can't see most residential owners needing more and even like myself with outlying areas this does the job.
