I just came back from a 1200 mile road trip where I used the rack on a 2015 Mazda 3 Hatchback for the first time. It works great! I drove freeways, good and bad county roads, even a stretch of washboard dirt road to a trail head and the rack performed rock solid. You do have to keep those straps tight although after an initial re-tightening after that washboard trail it did not stretch at all for the rest of the trip. But do cover the metal hooks before you install it!!! You WILL damage your paint if you install them naked as they are. I used window weather stripping and duct tape to "cushion" them.

Excellent, but 1 caveat... This rack (Allen 102DN) is really well made- excellent strength, stability and materials. Very easy to mount on the trunk and the clips are easy to secure. The foam doesn't scratch the car paint. For my old 10 speed (men's) bike that has a horizontal top tube, it's really perfect. I also like the tie-downs that my bike's top tube sits on with the strap fasteners- they're extremely secure. (I also use bungee cords to fasten the bike to the car bumper to keep it even more secure.) Excellent price too. One caveat- the rack is narrow, so it works great for my bike. But my S.O's (women's) bike has a slanted (not horizontal) top tube and her bike is longer (like some mountain bikes too), so when you hang it on this rack, the rear wheel sticks way up because it isn't wide enough to support it over by the seat. This is nothing against this rack- I should've done my homework better beforehand & gotten a wider rack to accommodate these concerns better. And I would get it from Allen because I'm so impressed with their quality & value. *** EDIT (Sept. 14, 2017): So I found something that cures the problem described above of this rack being too narrow- it's the Allen Sports Tension Bar Bicycle Cross-Bar Adaptor for 16.99 on amazon. Attached between the steering wheel stem and seat post of her bike, and the bike hangs normally like my 10 speed. We used it a couple of times and it performed great, just like the rack.

Was a little worried about using this bike mount for a 1,000 mile round trip. For the price I thought it might be a little more cheaply made, and all the reviews people left saying it scratched up their car left me a little worried. However this thing performed flawlessly. No scratches on my car just followed the instructions when mounting. Also I didn't realize if you have a female bike you would need and extra 15$ piece to mount the bike until the day before our trip. Did a little research online and decided to just mount the bike upside down. Worked just fine and no need to buy that extra bar to mount it (One bike was male bike other was female). I drive a very small car (Ford Fiesta) and was worried there would be some wind resistance or noise generated from the rack. No noise whatsoever and the bikes stayed still the whole trip. Worth the purchase

Absolutely got the job done! I took a road trip of just 230 miles. Sometimes my speed was at 80+ mph. The bikes stayed in place. There was no damage to my car. The bikes were rather large but the fit was perfect! The installation was seriously effortless! I have a 2014 Nissan Pathfinder. The box didn't say it was compatible with my car but it was. I would suggest you pack your car completely before installing because once it is up the trunk is not assessable. However even if you forget to pack something taking it down and putting it back up is too easy to get upset about it! Hope this helps and safe travels!

There are a ton of poor reviews for this product...I tried something I think a lot of these people didn't do to have amazing results while using this bike rack. It sounds crazy but I read the directions. I know right? Weird. I read the directions and recommendations and this rack didn't break my rear window, this rack didn't scratch my car, it didn't fall off while driving...it just worked. And worked well. I hope this review helps others. This rack is awesome!!

The first installation is easily the most frustrating part. When I first opened the box. I was very nervous that I was going to need a Boy Scout to help me attach it to my car. I settled for my roommate. It looks complicated when you first attempt to figure where every one of the flopping tentacle-like straps go. Then you press the rack's padded bars against your car and strap the hooks onto your trunk or hatchback. The product description brags about how initial assembly shouldn't take more than a few seconds, which isn't especially flattering to my skills. The first assembly is easily the most frustrating part. Took me about five minutes to discover exactly what goes where and how. Only about a minute of that time was spent crying and ruing existence. The second time you put it on takes about thirty seconds. Your straps are already at about the right length and your muscle memory will compensate for your general inability to attach things. Putting bicycles on there is pretty easy. Lift them up and into the little cradles. Then those are a simple strap on each side and it holds it secure. Repeat these steps for however many bicycles you plan to attach (which really maxes out at three total). I would recommend buying bungee cables to secure your front tire so that the handlebar stays stationary. Pros: 1. I am terribly uncoordinated at these types of things. And I have managed to get my assembly time down to about 29 seconds. If I can make this thing stay on my car, then your dog probably could too. 2. It's super compact. When I'm not using it. It fits really well inside my trunk. 3. The price. I was initially going to buy a much more expensive one, but I decided to give this one a chance. It has worked tremendously for my needs. 4. It holds very securely on the back of my Chevy Cobalt. I never have to worry about it. Cons: 1. The instructions are not very intuitive or helpful. It ends up being more guesswork than I'm sure they intended. 2. It looks very daunting at first. But once you attach it once. It's never difficult again.

I was initially looking for a roof rack mounting system, but at $300+, I couldn't justify it just yet. Once I came across this item, I was skeptical at first, as I read mixed reviews, and then the much lower price than most other systems. Also, I'm using this on a 2007 Nissan Sentra. However, after having owed this for a couple months now, I can safely say my doubts are gone! I've used it about a dozen times for short in town trips, but the real kicker was my most recent trip home. I still had one bike at my parents’ house in SE Wisconsin that I wanted with me, near Nashville, TN. To be honest, I had my reservations about using this over 600 miles at highway speeds. Turns out my fear was for naught! Thankfully! The directions are very clear on how to tie off the main supports as an added security measure. I also saw that another reviewer had wrapped the metal latches with electrical tape to prevent scratching. I followed suit, and so far I have none. The only thing to be careful of (and they have red warning stickers pointing this out) is when you put the silver colored wire struts in place BE CAREFUL! You can easily pinch your fingers. Again, this is a fantastic product, and great bang for your buck! I highly recommend. Also, this isn't a verified purchase because I bought it through Wally World, not Amazon.

The Allen Sport's website says this model does not fit the Corolla S because of the clearance of the rack onto the trunk over the spoiler. I decided to give it a shot anyway as the price was so cheap. Here is my finding.. First, the rack has a warning about the two metal hooks you have to set into place during assembly being a pinch point. Do not ignore this. I wore a glove when setting them and had no issues but I can definitely see how someone could get hurt. Assembly was simple, basically that was the only step. Second, if you set the bottom pads of the rack against your license plate and the top on the trunk, it clears the spoiler fine. The metal hooks mentioned earlier do rest against the spoiler and can easily cause scratches. I used a piece of foam to separate and it worked out fine. Third, many reviews mention the hooks that attach to the sides of the trunk scratching the paint. I used a piece of foam with an adhesive side under each hook to keep it off the paint, no issues. Fourth, an extra bungee comes in handy to keep loose bits like the front tire from moving around too much. Get creative. Overall, I'm happy with the purchase. The rack is being used for one bike but I don't think a second one would cause an issue with this set up. Again, great price to not at least give it a shot. Glad I did.

Got this 3 bike rack to put on my 2012 Prius V (the larger hatchback version). Amazon says it doesn't fit but it does according to the Allen fit guide on their website, and verified by real world use. It's been on several trips up and down the CA coast ranging from 70+mph freeways, stop and go city traffic, and windy mountain roads with no problem. It's a pain to put on your car so bring a buddy to help you hold it up and help do the straps. Here's some quick tips that I found from others that have worked for me: 1) Wrap the metal strap clips in Electrical tape or put pieces of rubbery cabinet liner between the clip and the car. Serves two purposes: protects your paint from scratches, and helps the clips grip to your car. 2) Use bungee cords to strap the bike(s) to the rack and to keep the wheels from spinning. More bungee cords never hurt anyone. 3) Alternate your bikes on the rack. I saw folks putting their bikes on in the same direction. Alternating them (one bike points one way, next bike is flipped the other direction) makes the bikes fit into each other better and evenly distributes the weight across the rack. 4) Retighten your straps after putting the bikes on the rack after you first mount it. Once the bikes are on there, you need to give those straps some more good tugs because the added weight will change the distribution and forces acting on the rack. Have your friend lift the rack/bikes while you do the tightening. Then you can neatly tuck away the excess straps in whatever way you see fit. I wrap the excess around the straps then tuck the last three inches back into itself 5) IF YOU HAVE NICE PAINT: Take the rack off frequently after long trips and clean in between the pads. I live in the dry and dusty California climate and I found out the hard way that if you keep the rack on your car for extended periods of time, dirt and grime will get up in there and scratch or stain your paint and/or bumper. It isn't too bad on my car, but it's definitely visible. With those tips go forth and enjoy your bike racks. If y'all have any additional tips I would love to hear some!

A lot of the negative reviews on here say that their strap failed on the highway and/ or on long trips. Never trust the straps, they are only made to keep the bikes from sliding around on the rack. ALWAYS bungee your bikes to the rack AND to themselves if you have more than one. Bungee cords are cheap. Bikes are expensive. Do the math.
