Of the Casio's for middle/high school, this one is my pick!

Pretty sweet calculator, and this coming from a dedicated HP user (and collector). This one has a great collection of features and capabilities, a really nice (new) display, and the calculator case itself is much more attractive. My kids abandoned their old calculators (which were prior versions of the same model) for this in a heartbeat. The QR code feature is really sweet -- very surprised by that!

Shines in the QR feature for professional use

This updated version of the FX-115ESPLUS and has been reviewed by many and given at least 4/5 in terms of functionality, build quality and performance. For professional use it has major pros: Pro LaTeX compatible script generated via VPAM, passing resulting to other devices, and graphing via QR code feature is very useful, and maybe unique to Casio; its equivalent capability is found in only expensive, larger and more cumbersome to use USB and Wifi calculators. The Casio website has far more horsepower than a calculator allows so added processing is faster, website provides more appealing graphics, added features, data sharing etc., while keeping the cost of the calculator near than of older models without QR feature. Casio's strategic commitment to education support for decades means its extremely unlikely the website or the QR method of passing results will be orphaned in the future because it requires so little resources to do. Its a win-win for everyone. As a working professional, I needed a simple easy, inexpensive to use calculator for online college classes. The Casio FX-991EX served and exceeded my expectations. Over the years, I have HP, and Texas Instruments including HP-35S, HP-50g, HP Prime, TI-36X Pro and TI-Titanium. I must say the Casio FX-991EX deserves a try to those in college classes despite the fact that TI currently conquers over 90% of US market share for educational markets. Per the NCEES web site, FX-991EX is approved for use use in FE and PE examination. The calculator is well made with easy to read big font and 4 lines display. It is intuitive and easy to figure out the various interfaces. Best of all, it is pretty inexpensive as compared to TI calculator. Personally, I feel TI calculator is over-rated and does not deserve the price I'm paying for. To me, the TI calculator monopolizes over US institutions. Almost every other teachers are using it. It seems to me that's what the teachers are familiar with to use to teach students. In my view, every doesn't equate to it being good. I probably attribute it to the good sales and marketing strategies of Texas Instruments sales folks. If I can personally decide, HP 50g is one of the best. However, it cannot be use in most examination due to its CAS capabilities. FX-991EX is similar in functionalities to TI-36X Pro, and it is better in my opinion. It has spreadsheet and table features similar to a very small excel. You can input formulas like Excel and propagate using cells. Due to its very small memory, you can only do it for up-to 5 x 45 cells. It is better than no excel features on a small calculator. As for the disadvantages, it cannot be programmed and the display can be slightly dimmed in low light conditions. To all those die-hard TI fans, give this Casio FX-991EX a try. You won't be disappointed. I'm using it as a secondary and/or primary calculator to my HP calculators.

A great calculator! I had previously owned the FX-115ES Plus

A great calculator! I had previously owned the FX-115ES Plus, with the natural textbook display, and really appreciated the intuitive design and the ease of use. When I was recently looking for a replacement calculator for the one I had liked to use so much back when I was in college, I found that the FX-991EX was the successor to the FX-115ES Plus and decided to give it a try, since Amazon has a strong customer satisfaction guarantee. I am very happy with this calculator! The price is hard to beat too!

Better device than TI.

Unless you want to graph functions, this device has all the functions you need, and a lot of thought went into making this device. Even though the key layout would have been better, it is a perfect calculator for engineers. The power doesn't remain on for so long when you don't use it for a considerable amount of time, like if you're thinking of how to solve a problem just after finish punching in the numbers for the last question, by the time you have to use your calculator again, it is off. It could just be me being slow at thinking but I had no problem like this with TI-84 before. Another thing is that the answer button recalls the very previous answer, not the answer I want to bring. For example, if I entered a complex calculation and I have to finally test some simple multiplications, if I press = button to test one and press AC, the Ans button will bring the product of a complex calculation and the multiplication, not just a complex calculation. There's a little bit of learning curve if you're coming from TI calculators. Finally, the footing needs some sort of rubber padding to keep the calculator stationary. It is impossible to lay it down on the desk and try to punch in numbers because it gets so wobbly. I always have to hold it in my hand to keep it from moving.

Best scientific calculator I've ever owned

Best calculator I've ever owned. It looks great, is easy to use, has a nice table of functionality like comparing two Functions side by side for about 25 inputs. Any more than that and it returns an error. Not only that, it does much more. Can't list it all. But it never lets me down. I greatly appreciate the dedicated fraction to decimal conversion button. I recommend it to all my trigonometry students, and peers who are not allowed to use graphing calculators during tests.

Must get for every engineering student!!! Got it just before the exam season. Should have gotten it sooner!' What I liked: -Buttons, the buttons feel nice and have and give a very responsive feedback. Unlike other calculators, I've miss-pressed fewer buttons. Some how the design of the buttons is layout is very intuitive. -You can set the output in decimals or in fractions. Other calculators usually only return what every format you entered in. This was a great time saver. -The build quality. For this price, it is amazingly well built and feels nice to use. -Intuitive menu/settings, most of the settings and menu are in FULL words (Not short form) make it very easy to use without even needing the manual. -High-resolution screen, the characters are clearer. I can usually see the entire equation on the screen which is really useful in avoiding mistakes. -Great Price!!!!!! I seriously wonder why I didn't get this from the start of my school term it would have saved a lot of pain and I would have made faster calculations due to its intuitive design.

This is the best non-graphing calculator you can buy

Used this calculator for computer science classes, and all of my math courses up to calculus 2. Now I use it for my job. You really don't need a graphing calculator when you're learning math..I think that takes away the point. This is the best non-graphing calculator you can buy, more advanced than the TIs. From the natural format of i, pi, E, etc to the ability to express things in terms of their roots or fractions - this calculator is wonderful tool to use in conjunction with learning how math actually works, rather than simply learning how to use the calculator.

Pretty good for a non-programmable calculator.

I think that this calculator is a bit better than my fx-115ES PLUS. But they are very, very similar. This is a good price point for a non-programmable calculator and is approved for land surveying exams. The only real complaints I have is that it is so light and slick. I would like it if it was a bit heavier and had more friction to "stick" to my hand. Even though it is very light, I think it will hold up well, but I do wish it felt like it would take more of a beating. I use my calculators in the field and have not managed to destroy my fx-115. I expect this calculator to hold up equally as well, but if it doesn't I will update this review.

Easy to shift output

This calculator is easy to use. I use it for Trig and Calculus during tests where graphing calculators are not allowed. It is easy to shift between output, either in estimated decimal form, or precise forms that give the answer as, for example, a factor of pi or a factor of a square root, or in fraction form. I really appreciated the value.
