Good purchase; better than petsmart betta bowls
I bougt the 1.4 galllon because I personally think the smaller one is too small. I bought my halfmoon betta and a dieffenbachia plant and both are thriving. With my betta I additionally purchased gravel, a leaf hammok, a thermometer and marimo balls. My fish funnily enough, rather uses the roots from my plant to hang out in and rest instead of the leaf hammock. He even loves to stick his head on the marimo balls and play with them a little. It’s nice seeing my fish thrive in this tank. I enjoy it a lot.

Works great without fish
I did a lot of research on what kind of fish I could put in this tank, and I ended up putting none; it's not even big enough for a snail. If anything I may get a shrimp or two at some point. However, my main reason in getting it was to have 1) a Peace Lily in the bathroom to help freshen the air. 2) I wanted it planted in water because it's an upstairs bathroom with a skylight so it gets hot and 3) it's a guest bathroom so I'm not in there everyday and needed a water supply that could sustain the plant in between my visits. I put moss balls in on top of white rocks so they will help keep any algae at bay. For my purposes, this planter is perfect but I do think it is too small for any non-plant life form.

Follow these steps & it will thrive
Not sure what everyone else was doing but my fish was in a container as small as a can of beans, after I swapped my beta fish to this tank it swims more expands its tail when I look at it and when I play reggae music :) it even cuddles inside the plant roots to sleep, so cool!! I always use reverse osmosis water of coarse which some water bottles will say that it’s RO purified so no need to go to pet store all the time and just talk to your fish and let it know u bought this new home so they are happier and they will then love you. Maybe it’s not the tank maybe you might need to be more friendly and not so negative, plants communicate and if it’s in a symbiotic relationship with the fish, that means the fish is picking up on that negativity too so y’all need to tell your fish and your plant it’s beautiful daily but make sure you mean it and you will see your fish plant thrive! I used a small peace lily plant on the 0.5gal. Barely any maintenance I’ve had it for a month and I just pour out 3/4 of the water and slowly add RO water so the fish doesn’t freak out and I feed it 3 mini pellets every other day or I monitor to see how many it eats and guide yourself buy that, scoop out the left over so it doesn’t dirty the water.. everyone that comes over loves it and I’m getting my grandma one for mother’s day, she is a big fan of this setup. Definitely recommend this vase just don’t take it so serious and let the fish be. Acclamation when you first transfer is important at least for 30 minutes in like a ziploc bag (leave bag opened and dip in vase)and then feed the fish as soon as you transfer from bag to tank. I had to let my peace lily soak in water to release as much soil as possible before I places in vase, poke as many thick roots as u can in the water but you don’t have to get too wild with it, the roots will naturally guide themselves to the water and grow. Follow these steps and u will do just fine I promise! Remember talk to the fish and be nice to your plant :)

Love it
Larry, Rosalie, my kids and I love this tank. My kids won the 2 goldfish at a carnival about 6 weeks ago. The fish were about half the size their porky selves are now. The bamboo was bought and "planted" at the same time as this tank. The fish and the plant seem to be thriving. My only complaint is that the top can't be put on securely with the filter. See picture. That and the fact that the fish are doing so well that they may have outgrown their space in 6 weeks are not issues that I'm too bothered by.

Good tank, happy fish!
I'm amazed by all the bad reviews on this tank! I've had it for almost a year and I love it and was looking into buying a second one. It seems the majority of reviewers are saying that it is too small, but come on people!!! These fish live in cold, sad, dirty little plastic containers at pet stores and supermarkets. Even the half gallon tank is the upgrade of all upgrades for these little betas. When I got mine he wasn't even able to swim around because the container was so small. But now he gets to swim and has many hiding spots in there. This is NOT unethical! Some reviews are totally laughable saying that their fish died in a day? Honey that wasn't because of the tank size, how could anyone even think that? Research your fish- there are many factors that I didn't even consider at first. Betas need a heater because they're tropical and read about the nitrogen cycle! It's very important to have certain bacteria set up in there BEFORE you put your fish in the tank. Also since the tank is small you will need to change the water at least every 1-2 weeks, otherwise your fish will be vulnerable to parasites and diseases. And as for the whole "the fish won't be able to breath" thing- the plant will help filter and circulate air!! I think it even says that in the description. I also have some marimo moss balls in my tank to help with that as well. All in all great fish tank.

Great product!
Bought the 1.4 gallon item. Perfect starter tank for aquaponics. We have 2 very small goldfish instead of a beta and this is a great habitat for them. We put two live plants and a marimo moss ball inside along with a plant on top and they still have ample room to swim around. The exposed roots are a great snack for them and overall the water quality and PH are good with this cycle. Wish these came in a slightly larger format.

Awesome Aquaponic planter
I did not think my plant or fish would last. But the roots sure have spread out and captured all of the waste from my little blue Betta. In just 5mos my plant has grown tremendously!! It is very exciting to see how fast my plant is growing and how the old "potted" roots fall off as the new "aquatic" roots emerge and replace the old ones. They even grow tiny fine hair like things that I assume is what grabs the waste in the water and converts it to delish plant food. This is just awesome!! I have my planter in my office. Which gets only a few hours of morning light. Can't wait for another 5mos!!

Use top with a larger container if you feel abd
I didn't use the container it came with, just the top part with my own larger vase and it's great. Perfect for my desk at work

I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend this!
I purchased this as a demonstration of aquaponics for my homeschoolers. We have the 1.4 gallon aquarium. In the aquarium we have one handsome beta (his name is Bon Jovi), about 2 inches of gravel, 4 marimo moss balls, and a betta hammock. Planted in the aquarium is a Peace Lily plant. We have had this setup for a little bit now and have nothing but positive things to say. The aquarium stays very clean with weekly water changes of about 25%. Nothing is added to it-no chemicals, supplements, medications, etc. Just clean water from the tap. Our Bon Jovi has plenty of space and is very active and healthy. My kiddos often comment that they believe he is smiling. The Peace Lily is doing well also. We are seeing new tap roots and new leaves slowly emerging. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend this! JUNE 25, 2019 UPDATE: We have now had this tank for 18 months. I’m happy to report that we also have the original beta. Bon Jovi is happy and healthy and doing quite well. We did add a small heater last winter. We live in Michigan and it gets pretty dang chilly here! We continue to maintain the tank with simple, weekly water changes with nothing else added (water conditioners, chemicals, medications, etc.) The white gravel started looking pretty dirty and dingy, so I changed that to river rocks a few months ago. The Peace Lily has grown so much that it’s been divided twice and the new plants are elsewhere in our home. The roots on the portion of the plant that remains in the aquarium need to be trimmed regularly to make sure Bon Jovi doesn’t get tangled up in them. Still love this aquarium and still highly recommend!
