I'm new to succulents and I stumbled upon this mix after 4 of my succulents died from overwatering (I never watered them - got them straight from a succulent site). I originally used soil mix with lots of perlite but it did not help my succulents. After putting my succulents in this mix, they seem to like it! They look healthier. I now water about every 5-7 days or when I see the mix has dried out. This mix is expensive for the amount you get. I did about 10-12, 3-4 inch pots and ran out with 2 quartz of mix. (Don't take this estimate - try it yourself) Sometimes I found long pieces of wood which look unsightly in my small pots so I just removed it. Overall, good for succulents!

This has literally saved my Cacti, they have grown so much and are healthy as can be. I looked at some reviews and they said they had either been amazing or horrible. I took a leap of faith and was not wronged by the positive reviews. I don’t know whether they changed the PH, people putting other soil with this, or not having enough sun. I’m from the Northwest and don’t get a lot of sun most of the time. As you can see they get plenty of light on my windowsill and are thriving. If you’re concerned about Jake the Dragon Worrior (the lighter of the two) with his shriveled bottom, that was due to not having the proper soil and being in his starter for over a month and a half. I did not have the money to buy this amazing product. Spike has been thriving from the soil and won’t stop growing! Jake hasn’t stopped either and hopefully I will be able to transfer them both in the future. If you’re skeptical I was too and am so happy that I bought this. I water my little ones once a week (Spike) and twice a week (Jake). The only reason why I water them differently is because Jake gets a bit droopy looking when I watered him once a week. It all depends on how much water you’re supposed to and how much your little one is doing with water. IM BUYING AGAIN

**Updated 7/6/18** I just received my order of 3.5 lbs of the succulent soil from Bonsai Jack. Based on my first review, he included a 1 qt measuring cup for dry measuring, (thank you Jack). It appears that 2 of the cups poured into the plastic 2 qt container I had used before, brings the soil just over the 7 cup line on my container. I have included a new pic. So I have update my review to reflect that I'm satisfied with his explanation in his response, and I can give the purchase 5 stars!! Thank you Jack! :) ** Original review** This is my second order of the 2 qt bag of succulent and cactus soil gritty mix sold by Bonsai Jack, and although I was extremely happy with my last purchase, this order fell short. When I took the bag out of the shipping box I noticed that it was only around half full. Ok, could be they used a larger than necessary bag for packaging 2 quarts of the mixer, or maybe not. I then decided to measure it out in a 2 quart container. It measured only 7 cups, not the full 8 cups that make up 2 quarts. I understand about settling factors, but this stuff isn't cheap. I like the product a lot and so do my succulents, in fact after receiving my first order, I liked it so much that I immediately placed another for 2 qts (which is this order I'm currently reviewing), and then quickly decided I was going to need gallons, so I placed another order. Now I'm feeling concerned. I don't like the uncertainty of receiving less than what I purchased. Don't want to feel I have to measure the product to ensure I wasn't short changed. Feeling sad :(

Really quality. I didn't realize you get a silver chopstick and ph test strip?? After I repotted my fern which is happy as a clam, weird simile yet it seems true. Being ignorant of weight and size, I didn't think it would be a small bag like this, but the explanation on the card with the chopstick (it was in the bottom of the box) made total sense and I respected them more for it. I did mix it with red lava rocks so as not to use the whole bag on a small fern. But it was worth it because I feel like this fern will grow a lot now. i will probably have to get another bag for this sanseveria that's too large for its pot. This soil is coarse, but the types of material are varied enough and evenly sized that I almost wonder if it could do with some middling to average soil to be more normal for a plain ol' snake plant. If I was more well-to-do let's say I would love to dump the whole lot on this snake plant and repot all my plants with this. No joke. Needless to say I really love this soil and am reluctant to go back to normal soil.

Previously, I was using succulent and cacti soil from one of the standard big brands at nurseries and home improvement stores. My succulents weren't doing well and had a tendency to root rot even when I reduced watering significantly. I believed that my soil wasn't draining well, so bought this mix after reading some blogs. This mix drains really well instead of holding the water and rotting the roots. My plants do much better with this soil and I am more successful with my normal watering schedule!

Update January 2018: My succulents are doing extremely well! I've had them in this mix since June 2017 and the roots are growing well and the plants are growing strong and happy. I am updating with new pictures with before and after shots. Original review: I am so glad I bought this "soil!" My plants were not doing well. I had them in half Miracle-Gro "succulent and cactus" soil and half perlite and the pots (my older ones, I have since replaced them with these "air pots" with more drainage) still retained far too much water. They were unhappy and I could tell. So I did a ton of research and decided to try a gritty mix and found that Bonsai Jack was highly rated. I had an Amazon gift card so I decided to buy 3.5 gallons worth and give it a shot. So far, my plants seem incredibly happy! They took the transition well and now they're not sitting in water all the time. Side bonus: the fungus gnats that were EVERYWHERE are practically gone! Another bonus: no top dressing is needed with this mix because it looks nice all by itself.

Very pleased with this product. I feel a little insane spending so much on "dirt" but my succulents and cacti seem to be responding well and the aesthetics are great - very natural looking and a nice color overall. While I had no need to contact the company the in-the-box customer service was exceptional with a few small "extras" which were a nice touch. I will be a return customer when I need to restock. UPDATE October 2017: My cacti and succulents continue to thrive in this medium, including a “rescue” that was at deaths door and suffering from scale/mites (it has fully recovered). I have returned for a second bag.

My succulent was having water issues with the "cactus soil" I purchased from Home Depot. It eventually died but not before I got cuttings. The cuttings are about 2 weeks old and are so far doing fantastic in the Bonsai Jack soil. I water them about every 3 days depending on if the soil is dry (also right now with the hotter dry weather) but plan to cut back to 5-7 days as they grow and the weather cools. Definitely recommend this soil for your cacti and succulents. DO NOT mix with other soil, it'll cause it to hold too much water and defeat the purpose.

I got a smaller version first, and love this product alot. It is pricey, but since i am using it for my more expensive succulents, i feel it is worth getting. It contains a uniform mix as described, though there are a few long thin wood splinters occassionally mixed in. This mix may be too big, coarse and dry for small pups or seedlings, and are better suited to larger succulents. It can work, but a finer medium will be more effective. You can mix it with other medium, like pumice, lava rock, or whatever else you already have. Product also comes with a free single stainless steel chopstick as well as gloves, twisty tie, and 2 ph strips. These little details are quite nice and unexpected.

I want to thank Bonsai Jack for an excellent product; also, the customers who bothered to review the succulent and cactus soil in a way that I felt encouraged to buy the product. I was desperate watching my 2 year old Kalanchoe Beharensis die slowly, but surely, and not knowing what to do. I had placed this plant in a room that was not bright enough and quite cold. I guess I put it there because it made the room look nice. Duh! The first symptoms of something not going well were manifested by the lower leaves turning bronze and flat and falling off. It looked pretty ratty. I moved the plant to a warmer and lighter room, but it did not seem to get any healthier. I examined the soil I had the plant in and realized that it retained too much water. That is when I read about Bonsai Succulent and Cactus soil and invested on 7 gallons of it. The product arrived promptly and definitely seemed of high quality. I gently mixed it with seedling soil, and proceeded to remove the Kalanchoe from its prison. I hoped for the best and 2 months later, the succulent started producing new leaves on the top and looking pretty smart. It is healthy once more. I recommend the mix to anyone for normal use, and where a plant is in stress.
