I was really impressed by the image quality of the cameras. I have been using these cameras for a couple of weeks now and was very happy until today. I was under the impression we could always access our recording on the SD cards if we didn’t subscribe to the cloud service. Well apparently if the cloud system is having issues so will getting access to your NEW recordings on cameras on your own network. Update - 6/5/18: I have been very impressed by the image quality alone. I realized in addition to getting the recordings on the SD card, if one enables the “include videos/photos in activity alerts through YI cloud service” one also gets 6 second clips, which serves as a nice backup.

I purchased this product as I needed a camera outside to observe property and kennel and dogs in kennel during away hours, for security. I did my research on this product as well as others and went with Yi because I read good and thorough reviews. I was apprehensive about trying this as I was behind on my technology knowledge and experience and had never installed a security camera, let alone wireless, before. I received the Yi Outdoor camera within a few days and it was as I expected. It was so easy to set up, installation instructions were clear and concise. We were working with one router that is probably about 8 years old in the east bedroom, and I needed the camera installed on the west side of the house facing the barn/garage area where my dogs stay. As a person behind the techno times, I had the camera as well as the wifi booster I purchased as well to extend the signal, up and running within the hour. First you have to download the Yi app to have ready for after you get your camera paired with your wifi, which is easy, for an old gal like me even. then, once your camera is paired, you add the camera to the app, then decide if you want to store the images and if so, use the cloud package offered, or use an SD card. I opted for the SD card option. After having read where people had success with the 64KB, that is what I use as well. Wow, the resolution on the picture is great, with a very wide coverage area. My kennel is clearly in view and so is all of my garage and garage entry door, and most of my yard. Via the app, you can go back and look at the recording on your SD card anytime. you can set it to record all the time, or when motion is detected. I have mine set all the time. After about one week, the card is full and begins to rewrite, so a 32kb would probably be full in about half the time. I am very happy with this camera, especially as a first timer wifi camera project. It gives me peace of mind being able to see what goes on at my place while I am gone. Thank you so much for this wonderful product. The images at night are clear black and white as well. We placed the camera on the corner of the house. Since we had no outdoor outlet, we chose to drill a hole straight through and caulk and trim it out, after running the usb power cord thru to an outlet in the house. There is nothing that I would change with this product. it is a great buy and when I get ready to place more cameras, I will go with Yi.

I have total 4 YI out door Cameras, 2 at front door, 1 at garage , 1 at backyard.(Two of them are bought by my friends because discount limited to one camera at a time.) I love them. Very clear picture, good night vision, motion detection is great. You can set up alert area. Desktop app works great on my MacBook pro. I was about to give one star review because I thought there was a water leak after few days for one of the front door camera. I made a claim to Amazon. Of course, amazon sends me a brand new one. However, when I changed it, i figure out it is not a water leak. I did not peel off the plastic skin over the camera. Did not mean to abuse prime membership benefits. Cannot return it because it's not okay for resale any more. I cut the line to extend it. Many of my friends are using Arlo . If you are choosing 720P, still more expensive and worse picture quality. Of course you can use battery. However, it does not have full features with battery. (cannot 24*7 recording to microSD and cannot set security region.) If you choose arlo 1080P, even from Costco, it's way more expensive. Setting up with wire is more easier than you think if you have a flood light (meaning there is a wire through the wall already). Good job, Yi camera. I owe you a 5 star review and here it is.

Excellent value for the price. I have three YI products, two indoor 1080P's and this one. The auto alerts through the app work well especially if you add a memory card - if you have a card, the app will record one minute videos rather than 6s clips. Make sure your card is 8-32GB. I have a 32GB. I tried a 64GB that I had on hand just to see but just as the specs say, they are not supported. As others have suggested, install the card before you mount the camera. The screws are tiny. I mounted my camera to a soffit which was a bit challenging because it is basically mounted to a piece of aluminum. I used some anchors I bought from the hardware store rather than the ones that came with it as those were made for drywall. I ran the wire up the soffit into an attic space and drew power from a light in the attic (lights are required by code where I live). The only problem I had was that if you mount the camera to the "ceiling", the minimum angle is still a little too much for what I'm trying to capture. All in all, very pleased with this purchase and I may add one to the bag of my house. But for now, I have lots of videos of delivery people. :-)

Wow it works great. I set it up this afternoon, easily screwing it onto the eave. My garage slopes down and the camera picks up the side out to the other curb, as well as to the corner including the street to see the flow of traffic. I am trying to say the large amount it sees is excellent for me although I do wish I could pan like the indoor cameras. Daytime color is vivid and clear. Nighttime is black and white and I see everything clearly with the infra lights. It is amazing, The distance is about 40 feet to the street. Sound is good and I can hear the cars going by if I turn it on ( there's a touch spot on the app for on and off I can also choose to speak through the camera but from the high up roof area I don't think I will be using that, nor the deterrent alarm as there would be too many false alarms with traffic going by. You can limit the alarm area but that would be better I think if I had it say near my front door, or a sensitive rear entrance where no one belongs. You do have choices with all of this and I am very impressed with the technology. A great buy ! !

As of today I'm selling my old Nest cam. The recording to an SD card is an awesome feature to have. The app has better features than the Nest app (easier to save videos and photos, share the camera with others, etc.). The nightvision seems more clear than my old Nest cam. Setup was a breeze--took maybe five minutes after installing the app. I almost took a star off because I couldn't get notifications. How I fixed the notifications was to go into the motion zones, or whatever, and just set the whole camera view to one big zone, and the zones started working. So as of May 2018 there might be a glitch on some phones or with the app in general which requires a zone to be set in order for notifications to come through. Installation tips: 1) If plugging in outside, get a weatherproof electrical box, preferably one you can lock. You might want to get a flat USB plug that is compatible because my locking outlet box won't close fully without sandwiching the plug a little bit. 2) Tuck extra cord under door trim and siding. I only needed to use one cord clamp to keep a little extra cord tight against the siding. 3) My app defaulted to "alarm on" which sounds an alarm with motion. Might want to turn that off--scared the crap out of me.

So I've had the outdoor cam for a few months now and am very satisfied with the purchase. It works so great at the front door that I just purchased 1 for the driveway and another for the back porch, so now I'll have all the entrances covered. I'm NOT getting compensated for this review and have no idea how those people do; but, if anyone's out there, feel free to compensate!

I have almost a half a dozen yi cameras (inside) .... After fooling with Arlo for two or three years -- I'm dumping them for the Yi outdoor. This is my first install -- only thing challenging is wiring. I selected this location because I could run the wire to the garage opener which has a 110 outlet. The only issue -- It takes a 3/4 drill bit to have sufficient room to feed the usb end of the plug into the hole. You can see in the picture how big the hole is ... plenty of room for all kind of bees and varmints. I wrapped a piece of plastic around the cord and pushed it in the hole -- then caulked it. Otherwise, you are just putting endless mounts of caulk into the hole. It would not be necessary if the camera and a micro USB ... as shipped, the usb cable is hard wired to the camera. I felt prey to the ad next to the camera that would leave on to believe that a micro cable would be necessary to run any cable of distance .. Lesson learned, I'll send that back. But I've had Yi cameras for several years and have been please with each one ...
