Pepsi's 1893 Ginger Cola offering is a refreshing take on bringing a new product line to the public. Both the Ginger Cola and Cola have a taste that can be considered as being distinctly different than the Pepsi flagship brand. In order to fully appreciate the flavor profile of the Ginger Cola, it helps to have tried the original 1893 Cola, as well. The original 1893 Cola is described as containing kola nut extract, a malty flavor, aromatic bitters, pure sugar, and carbonated water. As to what it actually tastes like, the closest comparison that could be drawn is that it tastes like a more deeply flavored Royal Crown (RC) Cola. RC definitely has the soda which tastes most strongly of kola nut, which is the dominant flavor in the standard 1893 product. Where they are different is that the line of 1893 products contain sugar. This most strongly contributes to a heavier mouthfeel with the 1893, which is actually a good thing, as it helps to accentuate the flavor. For the 1893 Ginger Cola, you essentially are looking at an original 1893 Cola crossed with a ginger beer. Those expecting something more in the ginger ale family instead of a ginger beer will likely not like this product. It has an assertive ginger flavor, much like a Reed's Ginger Beer. The ginger almost, but not completely, overpowers the kola nut flavor. Enough of the kola nut flavor remains to set it apart from just being a ginger beer. Overall, both products in the 1893 line are high-quality soda products that I expect to not last in the marketplace long. What makes these products great is the quality of the ingredients, and what will kill it is that the retail price is generally too high for a product that most consumers will pass up. I just do not see the average consumer paying more for a twelve pack of soda than they would pay for a twelve pack of good beer. Personally, I enjoy good soda and limit my intake to a single serving per day. So, I will continue to have a few of these on-hand, and hope to be wrong about its ultimate fate.

It doesn't taste "mass-market". This is not something that was tested by a committee to determine the best flavor that would appeal to the most buyers. It's definitely Pepsi, but it tastes like something before Pepsi became what pepsi is. That might be the genius of good marketing, but to be sure it's remotely like today's mass market colas; it's something that is decidedly more pensive and ponderous. The flavor hangs around in your mouth a lot longer. It focuses on the cola flavor rather than the spiciness that modern colas have. That might come across as watered down to some, but it makes for a beverage that is much easier to relax with. You won't feel like the bottle of cola is trying to punch you in the mouth. It almost has a medicinal quality to the taste. It would say it's a must try to for any pepsi fans.

I stopped drinking dark colas years ago. I didn't like corn syrup and other questionable ingredients in them. My boyfriend found this and motivated me to try it because it uses real kola nut, (a staple in African households), and real ginger and sugar. I actually love it! You can taste the ginger and it's a amazingly nice blend that's totally unexpected. I don't know about this drink but kola nut itself is very good for energy, weight loss, and heart. It is a little pricey though so I have to moderate how much I buy but as far a drinks go, it's one of my preferred.

I love this stuff. The Pepsi (black can) is a bit pricy for everyday use, as I can get a 12 pack of regular Pepsi on sale in stores for $3-4, but since I don't drink alcohol, it's a nice upgrade for a good steak or other fine meal. It's like someone pumped up the regular Pepsi flavor-wise, and it is damned tasty. The real surprise, however, was the ginger drink (gold can). I have nausea that comes with a medical condition, and a really good ginger drink helps me get ginger in a form that helps the nausea and also tastes great. Super with sushi, fish, sweeter chicken dishes, or just on its own. But mainly it's a nice break from higher-end ginger ales, and helps me with nausea surprisingly well.

This ginger cola is an excellent product. If you like the bite of ginger, then this is for you. It is not like a ginger ale, so if that is what you're looking for, I would say to pass, but if you really know and like ginger, you definitely have to try this out...I promise you will be hooked! Nothing else like it on the market. The combination of cola of ginger is not one that you would think or imagine, but when you taste it, they'll be no substitute. Try it! You're welcome :)

They need to change the name of this product to "1893: Pepsi Crack". The bold, spicy taste of this soda gives me a fix as I feel the bubbles and flavor flow over my tongue and down my throat. I find myself craving this soda like a junkie from Train Spotting. It's a struggle between paying bills and buying more. I am forever addicted. PepsiCo, if you're reading this, DO NOT STOP PRODUCING THIS!

I Love this new 1893 Pepsi. My bf bought this for me, so I am writing the review. First of all I have been drinking Pepsi for 38 years. I have tried every Pepsi product that has ever come out. Besides the regular Pepsi, my two other favorites was Pepsi w/real sugar and the Throwback Pepsi. This 1893 has moved them all back, this is #1, this is By Far the BEST PEPSI Product they have ever made, (in my opinion). I pray that Pepsi doesn't take this away and makes it a regular item, like other regular Pepsi products. It tastes like a darker and richer RC cola, with some malty-ness to it, it has a nice bite that is left on your palette and doesn't seem quite as sweet as regular Pepsi, but it does have the same amount of sugar. OMG It's just fantastic. If I didn't love Pepsi so much I would have given 4 stars instead of 5 due to two of the 12 packs came broken, and so far 2 cans are messed up on top. Whatever, I can get passed this. It's a shame that it's so dang expensive, it doesn't allow for everyone to be able to try this new Pepsi product. I am definitely going to be Very stingy with my Pepsi's. My BF who isn't a soda drinker let alone a Pepsi drinker really Loved this Product as well. I can't say enough good things about this New 1893 Pepsi, it's FanF****ingTastic!!!! I DO NOT Want this to go away anytime soon, but as I stated before I do hope that it goes to a reasonable price so Everyone can enjoy this great drink!! KUDO's PEPSI You've done it Perfect this time. ^5^5^5^5 Oh and did I mention how much I LOVE, LOVE, Love this new Pepsi?? LOL

My daughter brought me 2 each of the 1893 Original, Black Currant, and 4 Ginger Pepsis on a recent trip. I could take or leave the Black Currant, and while the Original was okay, I can get regular flavored Pepsi any time. (OK. I get the real sugar thing, and I agree. But I am talking about the additional flavor of the drink.) HOWEVER, I could not get over the Ginger so when she went to the store for something else, I told her I wanted TWENTY of the Ginger Pepsis! I know they cost too much, but I figured they would only be here for a brief time period, and this would be my one window of opportunity. Well, she came back with 2 more, and THAT was my brief window. Neither she nor my husband could find any more though they looked in several stores. Fortunately I found this on Amazon, and I bought 4 - 12 packs. (Much cheaper than eBay prices.) Then I decided to see if I could find Pepsi Fire. Snagged 4 of the 12 packs right before they disappeared. Cleaned out a spot in my closet and hid my treasures from prying eyes (grandkids). My special needs daughter had spied 2 of my Pepsi Fire and poured them down the drain ("HOT") so I was not taking any more chances! I know I cannot get any more of the Pepsi Fire (believe me, I tried), but I do not know about the Ginger Pepsi. Anyone know if this will also be a flash in the pan? Or is this one here for a while? At least they are still on Amazon for the time begin! I must admit I love Ginger. However, I was surprised to read so many reviews mentioning Ginger Ale. My mind never went there! I cannot STAND Ginger Ale! YUK! But I DO love crystallized ginger and several ginger candies. If this disappears, I think I will try adding some ginger to a regular Pepsi. If that doesn't do it, then I will try crystallized ginger. Now that Pepsi has given me this flavor, I am going to hold onto it! Also going to try red hots in the Pepsi to see if I cannot make a substitute for the Pepsi Fire. I already add lemon oil to have Lemon Pepsi. That is the problem: Pepsi keeps giving us all these great flavors, and then they take them away! What is up with that? That's like giving a kid a five dip ice cream cone and letting him take three bites before taking it away from him. Just not right.....

Reminds me of the Pepsi I drank growing up in Europe. I really wish Pepsi and other soda companies here stopped using high fructose corn syrup - that stuff is garbage and I could taste it the first time I had a Coke here in the US. I understand that it might be cheaper but it such crap, I stay away from anything that has high fructose corn syrup. Sugar beet or cane sugar is the only way to go!

I really wasn't expecting the ginger to be as strong as it was, but for me that's a good thing! I like that there's a strong flavor of ginger in the cola and it makes the flavor a bit more subtle. I would not simply call it Pepsi mixed with Ginger Ale. That is a disservice to the cane sugar, ginger, and kola nut that are very tastefully mixed together in this amazing flavor. It may not be for everyone, but I love it!
