Great Gift For College Students Or As A TV Starter Package
[NOTE: A Prime membership is needed to *fully* utilize this bundle] The Amazon Prime Video service is fantastic (and it's included in your Prime membership), and a good alternative or supplement to Netflix. A few years ago I would've been "meh" to Amazon Video, but now that they're more established, have more content, with great sales when it comes to purchasing movies, my opinion has changed (I now own a lot of HD/4K movies that I can watch anywhere and share with my family; it's so convenient!) Amazon Original Series, which features lots of award-winning shows is also a perk of Prime Video. And now, they have this HD TV bundle for you. This kit comes with: • Amazon Fire TV + remote, with 4K output [Second Generation] ($99 retail retail) • AmazonBasics flat HDTV antenna, 35-mile range ($17.99 retail value) • AmazonBasics HDMI cable, 6-feet ($6.49 retail value) — FIRE TV — The Amazon Fire TV has been reviewed at length so please see the reviews there; this review is about this package as a whole. Some of you may already be using an Amazon Fire TV Stick, when it's been offered on sale throughout the year, in which case you've basically used the "lite" version the Fire TV. The Fire TV is the faster, Alexa voice-controlled, AC WiFi, 4K version of the TV Stick. To watch non-Amazon programming there are apps available for most of the major brands: Netflix, HBO Now, Hulu, etc; please make sure your provider is listed. A majority of you will buy this mainly to use the Prime Video service along with Netflix. (If you're buying this but don't have a Prime membership, that's like buying a Kindle and not buying books for it on Amazon—why? Get a Roku or an Apple TV instead.) There are also game apps available, but honestly, I have video game consoles for that. — HDTV ANTENNA — If you don't watch a lot of cable TV, and enjoy your free basic over-the-air network HD channels (like I do), then this antenna is good for you. This AmazonBasics antenna is nearly the same thing as the Mohu Leaf 30 Indoor HDTV Antenna. The antenna is a great design, and you'll see similar designs with other brands. It's a flat plastic material, and can be stuck or screwed onto a wall or furniture. It's black on one side and white on the other, which gives you options like sticking against a white wall, or next to dark furniture. This 35-mile range antenna is better if you're closer to a big city with antennas that broadcast nearby. If you're further away from a big city, I would suggest the AmazonBasics Ultra Thin Indoor TV Antenna - 50-mile version. The difference between the 35 and 50 mile version is the 50-mile is powered by an additional USB cable to help amplify TV signals. But, of course, you don't get this package deal. Since it's omni-directional the antenna doesn't have to face any specific direction, *but* you do have to keep it away from any metal objects; you can't stick this behind your flat-screen HDTV or next to a radiator because it will not work. I recommend a placement high above your head on a wall near a window for the clearest signal. Setting it up is as easy as going into your TV's antenna settings and doing a signal scan. After it has detected the available signals I suggest you favorite all the ones you plan on watching so that it's easier to change channels. I personally only favorite the HD channels, because why would I watch anything less than HD quality? I have a curved HDTV for goodness sake! — HDMI CABLE — This is a good HDMI cable that works fine (and it has molded branding versus a sticker that can come off). As with all HDMI cables, it's a digital signal, which means it'll either work or it won't. An HDMI cable is an HDMI cable, you're paying for the look of the cable after that. Don't knock AmazonBasics until you've tried some of their stuff. They are efficiently-designed to reduce cost for you, and they work well. The antenna and HDMI cable are comparable to other brands. You'll save at least $30 with this bundle, and it would make a perfect gift for a college student going away, or anyone that just bought a new TV. Recommended.
