I have had a Garmin golf watch for the past 8 years and the strap finally gave out. I even had it tied together with a bread band just to get through the last tournament I played in since I am not very good at approximating yardages at courses that I am unfamiliar with - and have been eyeing the Garmin Approach X40 for at least a few months as I watched my old watch disintegrate. Finally took the plunge and couldn't be happier although the learning curve was interesting my first time out since I left the directions at home (thankfully I had already read them and could figure them out on the fly). I'm still, after several weeks, learning how to get yardages to creeks and bunkers, but it is very accurate; much more so close up to the green than my old watch. I haven't used a lot of the other features, but plan to as time goes by. I use it mainly for golf and walking since I already own a lot of dress watches. At some point I will sync it with my Android phone but I don't need the distraction on the course. I do wish the band was replaceable since my only problem with my old watch was the band so we will see how long the band lasts on this one.

Works great. The golf functions are much better than the older S model watches. It is fairly easy to use to keep score as well. Also it is small on my wrist and light weight. I really like that part. In addition it has all of the health and activity monitoring features. I especially like the charging system. I previously had an S-1 and the clip to charge the watch was always difficult to connect to the watch. On the X40 the charging cord clips on the watch so you know it is connected properly. Instead of plugging it into a wall socket it uses a USB connection. It also syncs with my smart phone via Bluetooth so I have a record of all of my golf and health activities on my phone.

I've had Garmin and Samsung watches before. I needed a new golf GPS as my old one was not supported any more. Since my last watch was a Garmin, but not GPS. I decided to get the X40 since it was the same size as my old Garmin watch. I am very happy with the device. It's accuracy is certainly as good as my old (pocket) GPS, it is really easy to load courses and even if you don't loads for you when you show up on a course. The big surprise for me was how well it kept score. Tracks GIRs, FH and which side missed. But the coolest part was the shot tracking. It gives you a map of each hole and somehow, I guess by the motion sensor, knows when you hit your shots. So I am getting yardage on all my shots without doing anything. This could be common among other watches and maybe I am behind on the technology but this was such a nice surpirse for me. Way to go Garmin, you knocked it in the hole!

I've had the X40 for three days, and bought it with the view of replacing both my Fitbit Charge HR and my Garmin S2 golf watch. So far the X40 has exceeded my high expectations: - it's a bit thicker than the Fitbit, but not bad considering the technology packed into it. Band is comfortable but a bit thin. Hope it lasts. - the gps worked perfectly, keeping score is intuitive, and the Connect app provides a shot by shot recap complete with a view of each hole. - I played one round of golf, and only about 30% of the battery was used. - the screen is easy to see, even in bright sunlight and when you're wearing sunglasses. - the heart rate function seems to work every bit as well as the Fitbit HR. - the notification feature is ok, particularly for messages and phone calls. The screen is just to small for news alerts. - the alarm has a subtle vibration, probably ok except for the soundest sleepers. - although the X40 has a screen backlight option, I don't think it's necessary. If you touch the screen in the dark, it'll briefly light up so you can see, for example, the time display. - the Connect app syncs smoothly with the X40 and has lots of data view options. Recommend that you spend some quality time with the online manual. Bottom line: Garmin has hit one out of the park for technology geek golfers who also want to keep track of their fitness data

Having had a prior Garmin device, with no issues, I was hoping this would suit my purposes for a smaller wrist device that would have accurate distances. Have used it on my home course and the interesting finding was that on some holes where I thought our recorded distance was off a bit, the X40 distance seemed more accurate based on my club selection. I used it on a trip to Scotland where we played 7 courses, including using caddies with laser finders most of the time, and the distances were spot on. I use the step counter and heart rate as well, and counter to some criticisms here, appreciate that there is a site to upload all of this onto my computer and to get updates as well. I did find that playing 36 holes would test the limit of the battery life. On occasion the device would not automatically advance to the next hole, but it is simple to just manually advance and not a concern from my perspective. Satisfied customer!

I am happy with this garmin! I wanted a small face and I have a very small wrist. I use a Fitbit and this made it easy to switch to! I wanted it more for just yardage but it does so much more! It’s accurate as I compare distances with the other 3 in my group. We shotgun a lot and changing holes is quick and simple. Screen is very easy to read even in bright sun. Battery isn’t the greatest but its more than enough for a round of golf and then hours of walking/wearing for the time.

I love my new Garmin Approach x40! I use it for daily steps, my heart rate, and the golf distances and scoring. It's great to have the availability to do all of these things on one watch instead of having several difference devices. (And it's not too big for my thin wrist! :) ) My only complaint is that I can't figure out how to close out after 18 holes of golf. I have to turn it off, recharge it, and then it finally leaves the course I was on. I love it!

my mother in law picked this out for herself.... so luckily she really liked her gift :-) one thing to note... this does way, way more than just read golf course distances. while getting used to it in our house over the holidays, it basically performed many of the functions of a fitbit or even the smart watch. one funny story - it is linked to her phone so when it rings, the watch is notified (nice for the golf course when you don't want to miss a call but don't want the noise) -- well, she was upstairs with the watch and her phone was downstairs with me and my father-in-law. Her phone rang and I quickly glanced at it and read out the name of the caller. Then my father-in-law and I naturally made a few comments about the person... just small talk about holiday plans etc. (whew!) Meanwhile, my mother-in-law (upstairs with the watch) , tapped the watch to get rid of the notification (or so she thought) but she actually answered her phone downstairs and the caller could hear our conversation about her! Beware and be nice!

The X40 initially appears to be what it is advertised to be - a replacement for a watch and fitbit. I am still learning/adjusting to this new device. So far, the only concern I am experiencing is the short battery life when using it to record and track statistics while playing 18 holes of golf. Starting with a fully charged battery, the X40 requires recharging after finishing 18 holes. There are a lot of features which I have yet to explore and use. I like the styling and what appears to be the accuracy - when compared to a Laser range finder or "Golflogic" IPhone app range finder, the X40 is comparable to the laser range finder although just regarding the front/middle/back measurements. Oh by the way, the operation manual implies that the only way to recharge this devise is by plugging into a PC. You can also plug it into a conventional wall outlet as with the recharging of all other devices.

Very cool golf watch. The watch gives you distances to the green, front and back. You can also pick out hazards and see what you need to clear them! You can also look at your round on the Garmin connect app after the fact and see how far you hit certain clubs. It will show GIR % wether you hit your fairways and the percentage you miss right and left. On top of all the golf benefits, it also functions as an everyday smart watch. It can track heartbeat, steps etc. pretty much everything a smart watch does now days. Battery life is good. Can fit 2 rounds of golf on 1 charge. If just using as an everyday smart watch I only have to charge it once a week. If your looking to kill two birds with one stone this is the watch to do it with.
