Bought this for our sons 5th birthday. He is obsessed with bugs and thought he'd enjoy. Well, I would never have thought that it would have intrigued the entire family. My husband and I both would check it out daily on the progress. My 3 year old daughter loved to watch them too. It was so very interesting to watch and learn. The ants came easily in the mail, and we followed directions and placed in fridge for few minutes. We did not have any issues with escapes or bites. A few dies within first few days as to be expected. We are 2 months in now and I think we still have 15-20 ants which is pretty good I think.

Great small and farm. Ordered one for my son for his insect study merit badge. he set it all up himself and made it work fine. Ants love the gel and really started boring through it. He liked it so much he ordered a second. Individual ants don't live forever but more than a month. My son found if you alternate days of the light they rest more and tend to live longer. He liked watching them and doing all the work. No maintenance except occasional carcass removal and that's easy as the ants stack them in the corner.

I gave this ant farm five star because of so many reasons. First, I ordered the ants from them (Live Harvester Ants Evviva store, not from Amazon) you’ll find the info from the manual that came with the kit, so much cheaper $2.50 for 25-30 ants compared to the ones they’re selling here for $8.50 and up. I got free shipping and we got the ants just a few days later. So happy that we saved money and for their fast shipping. Secondly, all of the ants were alive. Only 1-2 ants died in a week compare to some of the reviews I’ve read that half of them died, not our ants. Lastly, our ants were really active and have made multiple tunnels. My son was so happy. Also, Craig one of the designers of the kit followed up and emailed me to see how was everything, so for me that is huge because that shows that they really care about their product and their customers. Thank you so much! I highly recommend this product and this business. First picture was when we first got the ants, 2nd and 3rd pictures was after 1 week of digging.

We are extremely pleased with this ant farm, it was a great present for my son. This is our 2nd ant farm (1st one purchased from a local store) and he said this 1 is way cooler and was very excited when he opened it up! The only issue which DOES NOT have anything to do with the kit or the seller (They are both are great!) is when ordering ants they tell you to order when the temperature is above 45 degrees and below 85 degrees so that the live ants will make it to us, and right now in TN since Christmas it hasn't been above 25 degrees so he is checking the weather everyday to see when it will be safe to order the ants. He already has it set up in his room waiting for his new pets to add to this AWESOME aunt farm!

I purchased this ant farm for my 2 year old toddler who is fascinated by ants, and found myself enjoying it as much as he did. There are several different sellers of ant farms and I chose this particular one based on the many positive reviews, and am very happy with my choice. I had a sand-based ant farm when I was a kid and intended to get one of those but changed my mind after reading peoples' complaints with the tunnels constantly collapsing, which can't happen with the modern "gel" based versions. Even when my son picked up and tipped (and, yes, sometimes shook...until I instructed him otherwise) the farm, it maintains its integrity perfectly. Plus, no need to EVER add food or water, it is entirely maintenance free! My son LOVED it, as did I, and the ants lasted much longer than I anticipated (almost 6 months). The ants started tunneling within a couple days of being added to the farm, and it was very cool to watch as the tunnels progressed daily, eventually becoming a complex web with several "rooms" where the tunnels connected below the surface, where often several ants would hang out. The product looks great on the shelf both with and without the LED's on. The LEDs themselves are very bright, and the ants seemed more active with them turned on. I had a problem with the LED base a week or so after my purchase (couldn't get them to stay on because of what felt like a loose connection with the adaptor). This normally would have caused me to significantly lower my review rating, but I emailed the Company (contact info clearly provided in instructions) and they responded quickly and sent me a whole new ant farm by expedited mail, even though all I needed was the LED base. The new LED's work great, and now I have a second farm to use at a future date. I'm glad I chose to purchase from this customer-oriented family business!

This is an amazing ant farm!!! My kids (ages 8,4 & 3) & I absolutely love watching these creatures dig & work. We have learned that it seems like they clean each other AND that they work very hard to bury their dead! We watched them actually create a graveyard with the gel! We took one dead ant out to look at under a microscope and within 30 minutes they had completely moved their graveyard to another area of the habitat! The fact that the habitat is completely self contained works perfectly for us because there's little to no risk of them escaping. The kids know not to remove the tiny stopper on the top which would allow them to escape. The habitat is also the perfect size to transport it to the kids classrooms to share with their friends! Please know that the ants need to be ordered separately.

This was a gift chosen by my 11 year old son and they have been a big hit! Out of 30, 3 of them arrived dead and we have had only 2 more die since. Who knew you could mail ants?! The habitat itself is good sized, and could pretty easily be placed anywhere. The ants seem to like the gel just fine and have tunneled around, starting work the very first day! However, we do feed them “manually,” dropping in a piece of fruit about once a week. They seem to be happy and healthy. Our only complaint is that there should be more holes in the lid. There is a removable plug about the size of a pinky tip with one pin sized hole which we immediately poked about 6 more holes in. We also open the main lid every couple of days for as long as we can before they try to escape, but I do think there should be multiple holes all over the lid which would give better air exchange and lessen/eliminate the need to open it because they come running once you crack the lid! Overall a great purchase that the whole family has enjoyed!

My 9 year old son loves watching the Harvester Ants - the lighted habitat makes it very easy to see all of the tunneling activity. The kit was very simple to assemble and Evviva was very responsive when I submitted my request for ants and the accompanying eBook. I find myself studying the ants and I have often found my teenage daughter gazing at the ants. Very enjoyable gift and I highly recommend it for children that enjoy sciences. Update: it has been a week and a half and the ants have been very busy! Update: it is now late August and the ants are still alive! I have been adding a little bit of water to the gel, it looked a little dry, but very happy since it is still going with the same batch of ants (I still have 12 original ants)

We had to order the ants separately. Reading the reviews I was worried they would all be dead but nearly all of the 30 ants were alive. We put the vile of ants in the fridge for about 10 minutes as directed and then we were able to load them into their new home without any problem. The instructions warned that we would have to wait 24-48 hours before they would start tunneling but ours started within about 2 hours. I attached a pic of what it looks like after 5 days. My 6 y/o daughter loves it. She just sits and stares at it for a long time. We both do! She said to me "I can't believe how much those tiny little ants did in such a short time." I told her even small creatures can accomplish a lot with teamwork and perseverance. I think she's learning a lot from her ant farm.
