I originally bought this because my usual Apple 'Superdrive' DVD drive was still being dominated by my gaming needs, and I was going to need a dedicated DVD burner. Since then, however, my old Apple drive has failed me on several counts, not being forwardly compatible with newer USB protocols, etc. This drive works perfectly with my newest Mac, and is smoothly compatible with my older Macs as far as I can tell. And as I now require yet another dedicated DVD burner and/or drive, I have just now ordered another of these at less than half the price of the newest Apple 'Superdrive'.

This worked great for my purposes. I recently bought a MacBook Air to replace my MacBook Pro. I needed a USB drive to move my songs to my MacBook Air. It was a bit loud and not super fast, but it worked really well! I would buy from this company again.

The DVD in my 2008 MacPro died after 9+ years. This piece was a simple solution that worked great. Plug into USB, insert a CD and "away you go." It actually ripped CD's more accurately. If you do not like to tinker, this VersionTech is a perfect solution to a dead DVD in a desktop computer or if you need one for a computer without a DVD such as an IMac or newer laptop. Because I do like to tinker, I also replaced the built in drive on my MacPro but it was a long process.

At a retail tech provider, a similar product is listed at $79 USD. Ordered and received this product with a couple days, to my residence. Opened the packaging, connected and used this device in 5 to 10 minutes. No software necessary, no downloads. Worked to perfection! I love the screen controller. Wonderful product. Cheaper devices can be had, BUT this is the "real deal"!

Without reading and understanding fully the accurate description about how to attach this product, I went ahead and attached it to a USB hub. I soon had a valuable cd trapped in the product, not being able to use the computer's eject button and having no eject button on the product itself. After trying many different computer searches and actions, and considering returning the product, I contacted a local computer assistance company. They also tried a number of moves without success, until one technician, upon learning about the hub attachment, said, there's the answer to your problem! They had determined that there was nothing wrong with the product since it worked in their workshop on a similar MAC computer. I then hooked it to my own computer. All the computer based hubs were full, so I switched the mouse USB plug (which I put in the hub slot) with the product plug and success at last. The answer: this product needs the extra power of the computer to function. This product now works flawlessly for me, and i am happy!

Many people have commented on this superdrive, which performs well. Customer service with this product is also quite good. One thing I might add: if you use a USB extension with the drive and the cord is relatively long (6-15 ft.), the cord may not have the power to run the drive correctly, so that it will just spin instead of play your disc. You can spend a lot of time trying to figure out that it is the cord length and not the drive that is at fault if it just spins and doesn't play or eject. If this happens, and you are using an extension cord, simply plug the superdrive into the main usb or a powered usb port, and the drive should perform as intended. Perhaps I am just a dumbo for not figuring this out, but I think it's worth a mention for those who might not think of this issue. So, enjoy.

I'm using this to replace a 10-year-old external that died. This superdrive is tiny compared to its predecessor. Unlike the warnings from other reviewers, I have absolutely no trouble with this drive. Its hanging off an iMac and now I can load my CD collection onto the hard drive, as well as burn CDs to play in the car. Old tech, but good tech.

My older Mac mini had an on-board CD burner that went south. Rather than spend over $100 to have the burner replaced, I decided to look for an outboard USB CD burner and the Version Tech USB CD Drive offered an economical solution. It requires no additional driver and operates from the applications already included with the Apple OS-10 system. I had to play with it a bit to find the applications that control various functions. Audio CDs play in iTunes. To burn a selected file, folder etc, Finder is the control application under the File menu, Burn "X" to Disc... I highly recommend this product as a fix for older Macs whose burners have become non-functional. The latest versions of the Mac mini do not have an on-board CD Drive. The version Tech Drive would be an easy, low cost solution for reading and burning discs.

Working with Ben from VersionTech, I received another Portable USB3.0 interface drive from VersionTech. This one has an eject button and plug-n-play. I played a movie (DVD) on my computer the clarity, sound, and pause-stop-eject options were fantastic!. The super slim drive is great I cannot give enough accolades for this drive. Thank You VersionTech and thank you Ben for working with me.

The first one I bought - the one in this review didn’t work after the third time. When it worked it was everything it said it was. When I contacted the company, they responded quickly with instruction to reboot it and for ejecting the six’s. When I told them it didn’t work the sent out a new model (a big bigger in size, a bit faster and with a pop out disc holder. The addition size was insignificant really. The company contacted me to make sure it was working to standard - so far so good. Eacy to use. Just plug and play. I’ve used it on both my MacBook Air and in my schoo’s PC. I recommend the company and the replacement product upgrade.
