Nice Box Drum. Sounds good to me, with different tones produced by slapping it in different places. Adjustable "snare" sound, comes from two pair guitar strings that rest against the inside of the front wood plank, and run from top to bottom. The strings have a tension adjustment, that uses two hex screws, that you adjust from the outside bottom of the box (near the feet). There is a hex wrench provided, for adjusting the snare wire tension, and it stores in a nice hole inside the drum. There are also screws that fasten the wood plank to the front of the box. These screws can be loosened/tightened to vary the sound made from slapping the corners. (DON'T GLUE FRONT PLATE TO BOX!! it needs to be loose to make a good sound) Check out Youtube videos on "how to tune your Cajon", for more details. The fit and finish is very good. All the pieces fit together precisely, with nicely rounded edges. There are nice large rubber feet, screwed into the bottom of the box. The sound hole in the back, provides a great place for the cats to explore After seeing how nicely this was made, I'm glad I spent a few more dollars on this, than a kit, and skipped all the work sanding and finishing.

I bought this as a gift for my husband. This was his review: "This cajon is beautiful. It sounds great right out the box without any adjustments. I weigh 225 lbs and can sit comfortably on the cajon, which feels very stable and can likely support up to 250+ lbs. As other reviewers have pointed out, the cajon has a good, solid, deep bass tone and a decent snare sound that is fairly bright. I really enjoyed exploring the different tones that I can make on the front and sides. After playing for about 30 minutes, I could comfortably locate about five distinct tones. My wife said I sounded like a whole drumline. Pretty good for an $80 box with a whole and some guitar strings in it. I have a good ear for quality tone, and I can say that I'm pleased with this cajon."

I have had two other cajons over the past 7 years I purchased for specific gigs I was playing, then moved them on when I was done. 1st about $185, the 2nd in the $300 range as it was one of the first 3 playing sides with a plastic face that I wanted to put a bass pedal on as they did not have the cajon ones then. This is just as good or better sound then both of those, sturdy, well made, sounds great for snare slap and deep bass for acoustic, and if miked up why not. I purchased the Meinyl cajon bass pedal and love the bass sound and comfortable height of this cajon for using my foot on the pedal.

I have been drumming for 20 years, and to expand my ability to play smaller venues I choose to add a cajon. I spent weeks checking on many cajons in different price ranges, but this one seemed to have the things I wanted at the right price. First, the sound, obviously I am no cajon expert, this is my first, but here we go anyway. The bass sound is solid, it does not sound like its being choked off by a poorly made box. The snare sounds are good, its a guitar string style, but the advantage to this one is it is adjustable, it even comes with the wrench to do it. I am a bigger guy and the cajon feels sturdy under me and seems to have quality feet. I don't think this can be beat at the price, it produces a good sound and feels fairly well made, good job Pyle

The Pyle PCJD18 Cajon arrived quickly, but with a “dent” in the cardboard box that made me nervous. When opening the carton, I saw that the two-layer cardboard sandwich had its outer layer punctured on one side. The inner layer saved the day by keeping the instrument safe and without any negative impacts! Thanks for an intelligent package design. I have been playing my Djembe for less than a year, so I can't match the decades of experience of others noted here, but I am having a lot of fun learning to become a Cajon player, with help from YouTube. The paper contents of the package provides a clear path if you have any negatives (I did not), and offered a free gift (a travel bag) so others can learn from your experience. I am happy to join those who feel this Pyle Cajon is a five- star Pyle Stringed Jam Wooden Cajon - Percussion Box - PCJD18musical instrument at a very reasonable price. I've been a drummer for decades. I have multiple drum sets and did it for a living in my younger days. Now I play for my enjoyment and playing out gives me spare toy money. Recently we started playing some different music in the band I'm in, which lead me to cajon's and other hand drums. The Pearl Compact Conga is another cool drum by the way. And way easier to transport than a full size one when your already lugging around a drum set. But that's a different sound, harder to learn to play, and way more money. So I looked around and tried many different ones. The sounds I get from this one are really nice and the price just can't be beat. I like the adjustable guitar string type snare features so I can adjust it to the sound I want. And it has a deep bass sound as well. It's very light, but seems to be well constructed as I'm 6'1" and 250 lbs and it's holding me up just fine. The box is finished well and not rough corners and edges as you might expect. Overall i think it's a great deal and I couldn't find another that could beat it for sound and price.

After a lot of reading up on different Cajon's, I decided on the Pyle PCJD18. I've played drums for over 30 years and know good sound when I hear it. This Cajon sounds great! Deep tones along with nice highs. The construction seems to be very good. The rubber feet provide a very stable hold while playing. The overall finish is quite good - better than I expected. In my opinion, it's as good if not better than many other Cajon drums priced higher than this one. While I haven't done so, its weight and size should make it easy to transport.

This is my first Cajon, I sold my drum kit I never had time or space to learn properly, and went for this little beauty instead! I love it, a great compact size if you love to take it along to music nights to keep rhythm like I do, but are overwhelmed by a full drum kit. It’s very light and portable, and you can put a mic inside if you want to give your playing some oomph. I read so many reviews before going with this model, and repeatedly I saw musicians with far greater experience than I have, extolling this little boxes sound virtues. That was good enough to convince me, and I’m so pleased I bought this fun piece of kit for myself. Very easy to adjust the sound, beautiful wood quality, comfortable to sit on and so simple to play. This is what I should have got originally when I was dreaming of drumming! My husband has a band, and now I think in a very short time I will be able to join in and not embarrass him!

Bought two different Cajons before this one and returned them both. They just didn't sound good at all. Read all the reviews and noticed it was the second most popular and thought I would give it a try. For the money as well. I couldn't be more happy and it sounded better than the other two. It's also adjustable and has a good sound in the bass and snare. Thanks Pyle for the savings on money and a good sounding Cajon! A five star and well worth it!

I checked out a few stores locally and they had a variety of cajons. But they didn't sound right and didn't play right to the what I was looking for. And BOY were they overpriced!! I mean, I loved one of them but it was like $300 (and I'm just learning to play so I don't need to spend that much!) I found this Pyle cajon on Amazon and figured I would give it a try and I'm super happy I did. It's got a great look, a great feel, and the touch I was looking for. It also has the full-length strings inside for the snare (which is similar to the $300 one I was looking at) vs the cajons I saw which only had the top half snare setup inside (I don't know all the right terms). I've enjoyed playing it so far. And I'm a 6' guy who weights 230 lbs... so I'm not a little kid. This thing holds me and is a good size for my reach. A great first cajon (and maybe the only one I'll ever need!)
