  • OUR STORY: Kyle Kirkpatrick is a Olympic level gymnastics coach, extreme athlete and a tech nerd. But he was fed up with headphones because they wouldn't stay in, sounded awful or hurt his ears. Kyle consulted audio engineers, material specialists and high-level athletes to develop and test hundreds of designs, formulas and prototypes in order to create an easy and affordable custom molded earphone. In February 2012 Kyle created the worlds first thermo-fit custom earphone and Decibullz was born.

Ok, after reading some of these reviews, I feel the need to chime in. Sound engineer of more than 20 years here. I have been recommending these to people who work in loud concert environments for a couple years now. I bought a couple of pairs myself first to test them and I can say this: When you mold these well, the noise reduction is excellent. If you mold them poorly, the result will be poor. Sound waves travel through air gaps, like water travels through holes in something. Even the slightest gap between the 'plug' part and the molded part will drastically reduce performance. When you make the mold be sure to push the molding material up nice and tight around the plug before it cools. Seriously, if you bought these and think they don't work, drop them in some hot water and remold them. I can guarantee you that they do work, and they work well.

I was disappointed in the fit of these ear plugs after following the included directions. They weren't as snug as I expected and were not comfortable when sleeping. However, I decided to reshape them and now they are a perfect fit and I do not notice them while sleeping! All they need to do is change these steps: STEP 1 Attach the SMALLEST silicon tip. This is so the tip doesn't interfere with the molding process - I used the "best fit" one as they instructed and it failed to get the mold to fit deep into my ear concha. STEP 5 DO NOT shape the mold to your ear using your fingers. It creates uneven edges. Instead, lay your head flat on a table with a small amount of pressure. Continue resting your ear on the table for at least a minute until the mold hardens. This creates a perfectly fitting mold with an even, flat surface. These now fit so much better and they even work well with the small silicone tips. The foam tips are now an added bonus. They should really update their instruction manual.

It's a good idea to have someone else to assist you. The first one didn't fit quite right but the good thing about these is that they can be re-heated and molded again if necessary. Can't wait to try these babies out tonight and see if it solves my snoring hubby problem! Also try all the tips out before heating. I thought I needed the small ones but it turned out the larger size actually fit better.

Fantastic! I'm a member of the US Armed Forces and so I'm constantly going to firing ranges and training sites with gunfire and explosions. In lieu of using my headset ear protection I wanted something smaller and more comfortable for extended periods of time but was also earbud styled. These were perfect as I just tested them on ranges the last few days. Shipping was faster than expected and the instructions provided were crystal clear and simple. I molded them to my ears perfectly the first time. Upon arrival at my first range the other day, I put them in and removed the plugs so I could converse until it was time to go loud. They were perfect. The plugs removed allowed for normal voice level conversation and the plugs in resulted in no ears ringing after firing anything up to a .50cal. At one point I forgot I even had them in, so comfort level is top notch, I could see how some users use them for sleeping. Fantastic product, I recommended to some peers already.

I'm a competitive shooter so hearing protection is really important. In my experience, I have found that over the ear muffs always give me a headache. Mostly because they press the arms of my protective glasses into the side of my head. Inner ear buds or those spongy expanding buds always irritate my inner ear. To the point where I have to take them out to try to scratch the inside of my ear. I've been wanting custom molded ear plugs for a long time but could not justify the hundreds of dollars that most companies charge. I found these on a random google search one day and at first it was the multitude of colors that drew me in. After a few days of research and finding out that a lot of my fellow shooters used these I decided to give them a try. I was still pretty hesitant since they do sit in your ear so I was concerned about the itching problem. The whole molding process is easy. You set select the correct bud size for your ear, plug up the hole with the included plug, stick one in boiling water for about 5 minutes, let it cool slightly and then stick it in your ear and go about molding it the way you want it. You let it dry/harden, which honestly doesn't take more than a couple minutes and then repeat with the same steps with the other ear. If you mess up or don't like the way it looks you just stick it back in boiling water and start over. I used them for the first time at a match this last weekend and they were fantastic. The blocked out just about everything. I was still able to hear the range officer, the beep of the timer, and conversations near me, but the sound of firing guns was muffled quite a bit. I'm an open shooter that shoots 9mm major ammunition so the sound is quite a bit louder than a standard 9mm. The best part? My ears didn't itch! I'm probably going to pick up a few more pairs as gifts for my close shooting friends and maybe even as back up. The next best thing would be having the electronic ear buds, but really, are they necessary? My only complaint is that I wish the two buds were some how connected. That way I wouldn't have to hold onto one if I did take it out and risk losing it. it would just be on a string of some sort connected to the other one.

I am a long range competitive shooter so I am frequently around a lot of other shooters who use muzzle breaks on their rifles, which makes them incredibly loud. I had been using Surefire Defender earplugs for several years and really liked them. They blocked sound very well and were usually pretty comfortable. However, during some of the longer competitions, especially the 2-day matches, my ears would begin to hurt and feel very uncomfortable were the earplugs press against the ear. My brother had a pair of these Decibullz earplugs and really liked them so I decided to give them a shot. I took the time to mold these earplugs very carefully to the shape of my ear, following all of the instructions. After molding I switched out the rubber earplug tips for the foam tips and tested them out. I was very pleased to find out that these were much more effective at blocking sound than my surefire earplugs. I can now be comfortable being around muzzle brakes all day long during competitions. Since these are custom molded, they feel very comfortable and I have not had any discomfort while wearing them. I noticed there are several reviews that say these earplugs do not block sound very well. I am sure many of these people had issues molding the earplugs or did not follow the directions properly. If you follow the instructions carefully and take the time to mold them right, these earplugs are extremely effective. Also, since these earplugs come with several different tips, I would suggest trying all of them to find out which one is the most comfortable and blocks the most sound. Personally I would recommend the foam tips as they are both comfortable and very good at blocking sound. If you chose to use these earplugs without any of the tips installed, do not expect them to block very much sound. They are intended to be used with both the inner tip that goes inside the ear and the outer plug that has the decibullz logo on it. Also, be aware that these should never be left in your pockets or on the dash of a vehicle during summer. If these go through the washing machine and dryer, they will be ruined and make a mess.

This information might be helpful for some. I actually got these to see if I could convert one side into a listening piece for the acoustic tube ear piece we use at work for our 2way radios. It worked SUPER well and actually improves the quality of sound I am getting from the radios. First- they were really easy to mold to my ear. I think the worst part is I didn't wait quite long enough for the first one to cool so I had a bit more heat in my ear than intended. But I didn't burn my ear. It was just uncomfortable for like 20 seconds. Secondly- the things are perfect for turning in to a listening piece. I basically poked a hole in the little plug piece and slid the tube in and it seats right on a recess that already has a hole in it. The little foam ear insert part has a hole already too. So basically I molded them- poked a hole. Put in the tube and one spot of glue to hold the tube and poof- three hundred dollars worth of ear pieces for 15$. You can see in the pic that I also added a little orange handle on the plug one. I found the piece a bit hard to remove so I added a handle to make it easier. But yeah- these things work great. And are pretty easy to re-engineer.

Great product. I shoot in competition several times a month. The plugs were cooler to wear than earmuffs and seem to work better. I wore them for 7 straight hours during an IDPA pistol and tactical rifle match and forgot they were in my ears. Thanks for a great product that was easy to mold and fit!

I bought these specifically to wear at the range. I had my doubts, but decided to take a chance. I had watched the video and read through the instructions before I began. I boiled water on the stove, removed the water from the heat and per the instructions dropped one of the molds in the water. I waited 5 minutes, scooped out the part and waited 30/40 seconds. I took the mold into the bathroom and used the mirror to help guide me. This really helped so I could see where I needed to press the mold in my ear at. I left the mold in my ear per the instructions for 5 minutes. I reboiled the water and did the other side. The next day I visited an indoor range and took my normal ear protection with me. I was shooting .223 and 9mm and my buddy next to me was shooting 223 and 45. I was super impressed with how well these preformed. I did use the included foam tips and the instructions said they were for maximum protection. I like these so much I now want to try a pair of the new Bluetooth headphones since I run a lot. Doesn't look like Amazon has these yet for sale.

At first I bought earplugs from Radians but these are much better. A few things to note: 1. Don't use a metal spoon. I used my nylon spaghetti ladle but im sure other materials would work. 2. It works better than the Radians one in blocking sound. 3. It's meant to be used with the foam attachment to best block out sound. 4. I boiled and reshaped them multiple times with FANTASTIC results. I know another reviewer was worried that reboiling wouldn't be effective since they might be similar to mouth guards. Based on my experience, that's not a concern at all! So with my first try, I messed up on the right ear. Somehow it stuck to my metal spoon and stretched out by almost a foot like pulling silly putty. After quickly folding it back together, it dried into this weird oval shape with lots of creases. When I successfully made the left ear, I boiled the right ear for the second time and molded it nicely. It wasn't the most comfortable but worked. Today, I boiled the right ear for the third time and came out perfect! No creases and fits snuggly and comfortably. So how well does it work? These don't block out sounds but instead muffle things enough for you to be able to relax. The apartment above mine has been going through renovations that have been driving me crazy. But the first time I put these on, I didn't even realize the construction was going on until I took them out. Yes, the construction was still audible but it wasn't jarring. Also, my AC turns on and off throughout the night with a big clunk that wakes me up every time. With these on, I was able to get some rest. The noise reduction rating on these is higher than other products I've tried and the difference shows for sure.
