I sold my old Blu-ray player to help pay for this 4K upgrade (because that's what you do when you want the latest and greatest). — DESIGN & CONSTRUCTION — This is a solidly built machine. Once you lift it you know there are some premium material in this. One of the reasons for this is to prevent micro-vibrations from spinning, as well as electrical shielding. The design is a simple rectangular box and matches other Sony home theater electronics. — 4K — This plays 4K discs well and quickly. It can also play my 3D and regular Blu-ray discs. And if I wanted, it could play high-res audio discs. — AUDIO OUTPUT — I wish they had an optical output instead of the coaxial connection. One way around this is to connect via HDMI to your TV, and have your TV output optically to your receiver. Luckily I had that option so this doesn't bother me, but be aware for yourself if you have a preference. — INTERFACE & FEATURES — The interface and UI was easy to understand intuitively and use. In regards to features, times have changed and even though I'm pretty techy, there were a lot of settings and options which I was not familiar with which I had to look up. There are *a lot* of settings and it can be very confusing, even for someone like me. Certain "features" are annoying to have and I just want settings off and have a straight signal from my disc to my TV without visual "enhancements." Be aware of the default settings, especially if you know how you want your image to look. — WIFI — This can connect with WiFi to access its Smart features, or you can plug in a LAN cable. Since my main Smart device is an Apple TV 4K with a hard line connected to it, I use WiFi for this 4K player and use it solely as that. — SUMMARY — I got the one year old model because it became cheaper. I think the design, features, and construction make this a worthwhile purchase. If you have an Apple TV 4K and prefer digital movies, that's all you need. For those that prefer physical discs, this Sony 4K player plays solidly. Recommended. *** NOTE *** I was aware of complaints about lockup during playback before I bought this. This has not happened to me yet, and from what I gathered it only seems to be happening for certain discs. Fingers crossed that it doesn't happen to me.

After researching a bit I finally settled on the Sony X800. For its price bracket it offers great performance and options. An especially interesting one is two HDMi outputs, one for image to be connected directly to the TV avoiding the receiver bypass, and another for audio to be connected to a good quality receiver. It loads fast enough, the bluray upscaling is excellent, like rediscovering the movies all over again. HDR Colors are excellently saturated, reds are truly unbelievable! Not had the opportunity to watch yet a full 4K UHD movie, but tested one, and it plays perfectly on my Samsung UN 6400 55” (Brazilian model, probably equivalent to the 6300 or 6500), no issues with HDCP 2.2. Also have been using it as a CD transport connected to my Moon i3.3 and it has surprised me for its clarity and sweetness. A minor drawback though, the player provides no actual display at all on its façade, you must t sort to connecting it to the TV in order to operate it. Silly mess up, the superior model has tje same design and offers the said display. But highly recommended, a superb performance, close to the new Oppo at a much lower price.

UPDATE 2: For those of you who are unaware, the resume playback issue appears to be dependent on the disks. BD-Java disks do not support resume unless it's explicitly programmed in no matter the device you use. This includes Disney Blu-rays (I've tested 2 different movies) and the Firefly series. It took me 3 calls to support and a reddit research to figure this out. Hopefully, this review helps out others who were unaware of the different types of blu ray formats. UPDATE: The Sony documentation and tech support were completely incorrect. The USB drive did not fix the resume playback issue with Blu-rays. Until this is fixed, I cannot recommend this player to anyone. Great DVD/Blu-ray/Ultra HD Blu-Ray player. Blu-rays load up just as quickly as DVDs which is great. Keep in mind that Blu-ray resume playback will not work unless you plug in a FAT32/NTFS formatted USB drive to the front. It took me forever to figure this out and there's not a lot of information out there about it. Even Sony support didn't know about this.

I thought I wouldn't see that much of a difference between blu-ray and ultra hd blu-ray based on what I've heard but boy do you see a difference. Just so I don't ruin my analysis, I made sure I had 2 4k hdmi cables. One going to the TV and another going to the receiver. I saw Wonder Woman in the movies and all the women on the island looks like they have smooth skin.... until ultra hd came along. You can see freckles and veins when they get mad. I don't have an HDR receiver yet but I have a 2015 Harman Kardon. Just at Dolby Digital 5.1 setting, the sound separation between the 5 speakers and subwoofer is amazing. I upgraded my bandwidth as well to handle Netflix and yes there is a difference using the receiver connection to Netflix versus the TV Netflix. It must be doing something to the data before sending to the tv. I haven't experienced the issues that other reviewers have posted. I stopped watching the bluray, left it in there and turned it off. The next day, I turned it on to watch and it asked me if I wanted to resume . So for my purposes, it works. I don't fast forward/rewind or the other issues that were posted. It's a 5 star for me at this point. Update: I used the 2nd HDMI for the sound and it's awesome. On the second movie that I watched, I noticed that there was a delay when I used the 2nd hdmi to the receiver compared to sound from TV to receiver. All i did was paused the movie and resumed and it was fine. No other issues otherwise.

I was a little worried upon reading reviews on Amazon for the Sony UBP-X800 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray Player. I almost exclusively purchase Sony products and everywhere else aside from Amazon, this product has glowing reviews. I can confirm this product exceeds my expectations for a quality built product with excellent features. I watched John Wick (4K disc) and the picture and sound were as crisp and clear as I would have expected. I then launched the Amazon Prime app and watched episodes for Tom Clancy's Jack Ryan in UHD and was blown away. I love that this player does not have an elaborate front display. I always turn displays on equipment to dim or off to not add additional light into the room. My previous Sony Blu-ray player had this annoying energy saving function that could not be turned off so if the device was not used within a certain time if left on it would power down, which I hated. This device stays on and has a quick start function which is great. I purchased this item from Amazon Warehouse as used and could not be happier with the product and saved nearly $100 with the buy.

It's good to see that this player is finally showing up on the actual store shelves here in Houston. I tried for at least a month to buy one locally without being able to find any place that could actually deliver one. Finally broke down and bought one via an Amazon partner vendor, and I'm happy as can be to have one now. (Coincidentally, they started showing up on the shelves of the Best Buy stores here in Houston about three days before mine was delivered to me...on the bright side, I saved a few bucks by not having to pay Texas sales tax...and delivery was free.) Unfortunately, the player does not come with the cables necessary to get the best picture and sound, so if you order it for delivery, you will need to have the high quality cables on hand when it arrives. That aside, hook up and system set up are very intuitive and I was up and running in a matter of minutes. I'm running the player through a Sony 4K television set and have been generally pleased with the picture and sound quality that I'm getting (also using a Sanyo sound bar system). 4K discs are still relatively limited and relatively expensive when compared to the other types, but prices should begin dropping as soon as the demand rises for the discs, so that will get better. Right now I'm fairly dependent on Netflics and Amazon Prime Video for my 4K content, but I'm also very pleasantly surprised by the high quality video that can be had by playing a standard Blu-Ray disc through the system. Even regular DVDs look better than ever. I did have to do an immediate system update on the player before I could get it to "remember" and connect to my home network without having to do set it up again, but since that was done I have had no problem with the player connecting to the network. The system, it appears, will be updated at least once a month for the time being, so that's something to keep in mind if you don't set your preferences to automatically check for updates. One more tip: the player, believe it or not, actually comes with a physical user's manual...and it is well written. Take a few minutes to go over each of the settings that you can control via your preferences because the system defaults may not be best for your individual needs. It's worth the time, and it makes a huge difference in video and sound quality. Overall, I'm very happy with the system right now and use it several times a week. I've been told that it's state of the art in 4K dvd players, and I can easily believe that based upon what I've seen so far.

Wider and deeper (though still low-profile) than any of my recent BD or DVD players, but I'm pretty sure that's to accommodate the processing power they've packed into this unit. 4K discs play beautifully with incredible detail, some scenes even too sharp (stark/harsh) for my taste so I've adjusted the display properties (on a Vizio, 4K, 55") to soften it up. There are also an amazing number of settings within the player itself (I've got most set to "auto"). As you might expect, it's pretty much plug-and-play, just make sure to use the highest quality inputs on your TV and/or receiver and the correct HDMI cables to handle 4k video. I had some issues because I never had my receiver or TV inputs set up properly to begin with, because they all handled 1080 just fine, with the TV handling UHD directly from the network, but I won't be using the TV for streaming from here on out. It just doesn't have the same capabilities. I'm a fan of FX based movies and great cinematography and I've been playing my Marvel, DC, Sci Fi and Fantasy Blu Rays non-stop all weekend. The detail on my "old" Blu Ray movies is stunning. Watching Avengers now, and it's as if I'm watching it for the first time with details I've never noticed before, just as with the other movies I've watched through this afternoon. Blu-Ray discs, Amazon Prime, Netflix, Hulu and Vudu videos played through this unit are upscaled to, as far as I can tell, full HD, if not better. It wouldn't matter much on a screen <50", but I'm betting the extra resolution on a 65" or larger display would be especially amazing by comparison. I've owned several other upscaling players over the years. This is, by far, the best experiece.

I purchased this to go with a new SONY XBR55X900E 55-inch 4K Ultra HD TV. As always, I like the quality of SONY products. One nice interconnectivity convenience is that the TV remote can *almost* replace the Blu-ray player remote. The one exception is that the TV remote does not have an open/close button for the player. Only one glitch so far, the player froze on one 4K Ultra HD movie. The movie disk might be the culprit. The other 4K Ultra HD movie disks played fine. I do like that the player can remember where I had stopped the previous movie, so if I watch only part of a movie, I can just fire up the movie another night and not have to search through the "scene selection" menu.

I have a Sony 900e and this works great with it, setup was flawless, got two free 4k movies, and purchased 4 more 4ks movies, play Netflix, dvds of all kinds, works well , don't understand why people are having problems, but sometimes there's some bad apples in the bunch. I believe you should get the same maker of your TV,when buying a DVD player . Sony with Sony , Samsung with Samsung, but that's just me. UPDATE: 9/23/2017 , STILL LOVING IT, played multiple dvds , blue rays , 4kuhd, works GREAT!!! Also I think it fast ( quick load and play ) .UPDATE 12/17/2017 Still works great, I’ve had zero problems with this and played everything on it. Highly recommended. But I paid 250.00 that’s the only thing I’m bummed about, so for this price I’d grab it ! UPDATE 7/1/2018, Well I had this for about 11 months now and the only problem ( as well as annoying ), was the update issue,it WOULD NOT say “no update needed “ or “already updated”, it would just SAY can’t communicate with sever, god that was annoying ,And there was an update for the player released on June 20th 2018 , so I called Sony and spoke with the representative and he had me do it from the USB way which is basically download from computer onto a USB drive and install on the players USB hub. It worked, also it fixed the check for update problem, works fine now , I don’t know why I waited so long to call them ,I was even ready to send it back. UPDATE; ( and my last ) 1/23/2019 well still working great, my update problem is no more. Great buy and Great customer service. Highly recommendable by me.
