I am a picky person perhaps!!! And this scope meets my PP requirements Perfectly. I was able to see the eclipse this week by projecting the image onto a piece of white paper on the side of my car. See photo... I like the armored coating and the easy focusing ring that is not buried in the housing somewhere. I can see pine needle clusters up to a mile away clearly and hopefully see a 22 cal bullet hole in a black paper bullseye. The clarity is very nice and even with glasses on I can utilize the whole field of view. The only thing I wish it had would be a rear lens cover string attachment, and an adjustable tripod connection point that can be rotated 90 degrees for bench rest use. I can recommend this scope.

For the record, I beta-tested the scope for Roxant, so I was reimbursed for my payment. It's a great scope! I will recommend this unit to my friends and family, no doubt about it. It's definitely less expensive than other similar units, and has the same feature set. The included instructions were all I needed, and were succinct and to the point. I had the unit assembled and was using the scope within 5 minutes of taking out the box. It doesn't feel cheap, considering the price point, and the tripod extends fluidly considering how light it is. I like it! The magnification is crisp and clear even at the higher levels, and I was able to easily find and maintain focus with no slippage while panning. I spotted my shots from all three ranges (25, 50, 100 yards) with no difficulty. I plan to bring this on my hunting trip in November and use it while up in a stand. Previously I used my rifle scope for scanning the area, which was unwieldy, and I think this would be better for that purpose. Great size and weight! It's smaller than I expected, which is a good thing as it makes it eminently portable. I was able to set up on the back of a 4-wheeler and a box we had for that purpose. Only in tall grass was the tripod a little short, but that's to be expected. The body and construction are relatively durable - mine suffered a minor scratch to the casing while being handled ruggedly by a friend (tossing into the metal bed of a truck) but it did not affect function at all. I didn't run any higher-endurance tests on it, as I like the unit and this wasn't purchased to destroy. The casing is very sturdy and other than the scratch (which is very minor) it held up well. The focus ring worked smoothly and cannot be over-rotated with pressure, which is a plus. My friend's scope had a "clicking" dial for focus, and he liked the smooth focus on my Roxant better. As long as Roxant keeps this around the $90 price, it's a terrific bargain. If it ever falls below that, be sure to snatch it up.

Everything about this screams quality. I got it mainly as a spotting scope for the shooting range. I was sick of having to walk 100 yds to see where (or if) I hit my target. I used the Blackbird this morning to sight in my rifle at 100 yds and it worked beautifully. I could check after each shot and adjust my sights accordingly, rather than having to walk to the target to see where I hit after each shot. I played around with it at home for bit to get the hang of how everything worked, so when I got to the range it only took a few seconds to zoom and focus it in. The images are crystal clear, my first thought once I had it focused in was "Whoa it's in HD!" The stand is solid, and I love that you can adjust the stiffness of the pivot points easily just by twisting the handle. The eye cup is comfortable and the eye relief is at the perfect height for me when fully extended. Has a nice solid feel to all parts. I could not be happier with this and I'm glad I decided to spend the extra money to get this. I in initially planned to get a cheaper scope with higher magnification, but I decided to go with Roxant due to their reputation for quality. It was a good decision! The size and weight are just right. I would not want it to be any lighter because I think that would make it harder to hold steady when hand holding it. Build is solid and seems very sturdy. Love the rubber armor coating. It gives in a nice grip and takes the worry out of scratching it up or jarring it when you lay it down. The focus ring has just the right amount of stiffness/friction so that it stays in place but isn't hard to twist. Allows you to get it to where you want it without it moving on you. Tripod is great. I MUCH prefer the metal of this stand to plastic. Also like the stiffness to the pivot points on the legs so they stay open when you move it from one spot to another. I didn't really use the instructions much because it was pretty self explanatory. Just playing around with it for a few minutes was enough to familiarize myself with it. I have never had a spotting scope, binoculars, or anything like that before and I was able figure it out pretty easily. The only thing I referred to the instructions about was the sun shade (I wasn't sure what it was for), and they were helpful for that. The price is very fair and honestly for the quality I got I would have expected to pay at least double. I was expecting good quality, but I was blown away by just how good it was. More than likely I will pick up one of these as a gift for my mom. She likes to watch nature and this scope would be great for that. Just a quick word on the magnification. Yes you can get other scopes with higher magnification. I cannot speak to their quality because I do not own them. I will say that I set this up on my porch and at 36x I could read a license plate on a parked car at around 300 yds away.

I already had a Celestron Hummingbird 56mm scope and decided to compare it with the 50mm Roxant Blackbird. Here are the differences: 1) The Hummingbird costs more than 4 times as much. 2) The Blackbird is quite a bit larger even though the Hummingbird has a wider aperture. 3) Weight is similar. 4) Both give high quality images. 5) At 20x, the Hummingbird has just enough eye relief to use when wearing my eyeglasses. I have to remove my glasses when using the Blackbird because there is less eye relief. Both scopes make me take the glasses off at higher magnification. 6) The Blackbird's magnification range is a bit higher. That makes it a better choice for target shooters. The Hummingbird's range is better suited for bird watching. 7) The Blackbird has a sun shade. 8) The Hummingbird is also available in a 50mm version that is small enough to squeeze into your pant pocket. It is less costly than the 56mm. 9) Both scopes have decent cases. The Blackbird case fits loosely enough that you can leave a tripod adaptor attached to the scope when it is in the case. My recommendations? Get the 56mm Hummingbird if you are a birdwatcher who wears glasses. Get the Blackbird if you don't wear glasses and you are on a budget. Get the 50mm Hummingbird if you need the smallest good scope available. Get the Blackbird if you are a target shooter.

Terrific Product! Yes, you can see .223 on paper at 100 yards! I purchased the Blackbird primarily for spotting targets at 100 yards or less. Did a bit of research on what went into a quality spotting scope and found the Blackbird ticked all the right boxes. Could not have been happier with my decision to give the Blackbird a try. Right out of the box I was impressed by the feel and weight of the unit. Lightweight but heavy enough to feel solid. No loose or rattling parts, no plastic can feel to the body and the compact design means great portability. While I purchased the Blackbird mainly for use at the range I think I will try to find a digiscoping adapter and see what sort of photos I can capture with it. The assembly and controls were very easy to figure out. So easy in fact that I did not read the instructions. Initially the price was what attracted me to the Blackbird, figured at this price point it was pretty low risk. After using the Blackbird I think the price is exceptionally fair for what you get. The size is great, compact enough to fit in my range bag or take hiking without worrying about added weight and bulk in a pack. The rubber armor casing feels durable and does not have the plastic feel of many scopes in this price range. I really like the focus ring. Much easier for me to focus than many of the small dial focus scopes I have tried. It's incredibly smooth and easily adjustable, functions like the focus on a camera lens. The Blackbird feels good in the hand. All of the moving pieces fit and function smoothly. No rattles, no specks on the lenses, nothing flimsy or cheap feeling about this scope. Definitely like the metal construction of the tripod. It feels sturdy, is easy to maneuver and does not add excessive weight to the package. The tripod does not flex when repositioning the scope to a different viewing angle and holds nice and steady when locked into position. The Blackbird would certainly be an excellent gift for any outdoor enthusiast.

I spent a lot of time researching spotting scopes before decided on the Roxant Blackbird. I was looking for something affordable and extremely well made. I wanted crystal clear optics at good distances for my bird watching. I just got my scope today, and I've been playing with it all afternoon. To say that I am blown away is putting it mildly. It is a beautiful piece of engineering and the images I can get with it surpass my wildest imaginings. I live at the mouth of the Thames River in Connecticut, and I can see things all the way across the river with amazing clarity. Of course, this is just me testing it out from my apartment window, so I looked to zero in on things much closer, just a couple hundred yards away, for example, and again, the crisp detail is a dream. I love the size of the Blackbird, and I love its feather-light weight, great to be carrying through forests and fields. It is light but feels solid as a rock. It feels as if it could be built for military duty. The focus ring is a smooth as can be. I like the metal tripod as well and would prefer it to plastic any day. They say they are a small company, but I think they could teach the big companies a thing or two. I believe it would make a great gift for my fellow birders. Those of us who are reporting data to the Cornell Lab of Ornithology will find it invaluable. The scope is a cinch to figure out and the instructions were quite helpful. Again, as I said above, I was looking for a good scope I could afford without making any compromises on quality. I found that in the Roxant Blackbird and then some.

I ordered the Roxant Blackbird 12-36 x 50 scope as a possible replacement for the spotting scopes that our junior air rifle shooting program currently uses. The scopes are more than ten years old and are showing the effects of heavy use (and abuse) by our kids in the program. The scopes are used for viewing paper targets at a distance of ten meters. As such, the scopes have to have a very short focusing range that is not accommodated by many scopes, especially high-powered scopes. This scope looked promising as it was compact and lightweight. As our spotting scopes are mounted on a tripod at a height of five feet, a heavy scope raises the center of gravity of the tripod scope system and increases the tendency to tip over if accidentally bumped. A light scope is less prone to fall over. I had the opportunity to use this scope this past weekend at an eight hour tournament and these are my thoughts. PROS: 1. Light Weight:: The body of the scope seems to be made of a rigid polymer instead of metal. While metal is generally more durable, it is heavier. Polymers are lighter and can be made strong enough for the application if engineered correctly. Only time will tell if this scope is durable enough for our use. 2. Quality: The scope seems to be well made. I did not notice any rattling and the fit and finish feels good in the hand. The focusing ring and the zoom eyepiece both moved smoothly and with mild friction. The friction is a positive as it prevents the scope from going accidentally out of focus by incidental contact. 3. Range of focus: The range of focus is more than adequate for our use. In testing of this unit, I was able to focus this particular scope to a distance of 7 meters – better than advertised. It will easily suffice our needs for ten meters. 4. Eye relief: At low and medium magnifications, eye relief is comfortable and more than adequate. 5. Integrated covers: The covers for the objective and eyepiece lens are attached via an integrated lanyard. It is impossible to lose them! Only time will tell how long the plastic lanyards will last but I like the fact that the kids can’t over tighten screw-on covers or lose them. 6. Free tabletop tripod and carry bag: While not the highest quality or the most adjustable, they work and was included free! 7. Integrated sunshade and eye-relief: The front objective lens has an integrated slide-out sunshade that extends and retracts smoothly with a small amount of friction so that it stays in place. The eyepiece also has a twisting retractable/extendable ring so that you have the proper eye relief if you wear glasses. 8. Field of view: The field of view of this scope is near perfect for 10 meter target shooting. At the lowest magnification, you can see the whole target sheet which is approximately 9” x 12”. At medium magnification, you can very clearly see the pellets holes and their relationship to the scoring rings. 9. Quality of the optics: A challenge for scopes in this price range is the quality of lenses. Inexpensive scopes that I have owned in the past have had distracting chromatic aberration (noticeable as a blue fringe around the perimeter and sometimes as a halo around objects) as well as distortion from the center of the lens to the edges. While this scope does have some of both, I was surprised at how minimal it was. The field of view was relatively flat. Again, I was looking at a black and white target and this may not be a fair test of how color images will appear, but for my purpose, it performed admirably. All portions of the image seemed to be in focus at the same time. Overall, exceptional for the price. 10. Ergonomics: Well balanced and smooth – there are no sharp edges that can be uncomfortable in the hand. Would be good for hand held viewing with something to brace against, like a tree or post. CONS: 1. Focusing speed: The focusing, as noted earlier, was smooth. However, it is very fast. At ten meters, the difference between being in focus and not in focus was a very small arc change. This made precise focusing a little bit of a challenge. In my experience, having the more common small knob on the side allows for more precise focusing. My guess is that this was a design choice to cut down on parts, complexity and cost and put the money elsewhere in the scope. I would rate this as an acceptable decision. 2. Plastic mount: The mount where the tripod screws into the scope appears to be plastic with plastic threads. The downside here is that if the kids screw it down hard enough, they could strip out the threads. A metal mount would be more durable. However, I have had scopes that have had a plastic mount with a brass threaded insert installed to address the durability issue, but this has its own shortcomings. I have had more than one insert pull out of the plastic mount due to overzealous tightening of the mounting screw. Time will tell how durable this will be. 3. Rubber coating: For some reason, many modern optical devices come with a rubberized coating that feels good in the hand initially but turn gummy as they age. Even high-quality German made optics have done this. I would rather have just a textured painted on finish than a “rubberized” coating that will turn gummy eventually. Or a simple removable and replaceable cover that can be changed when it is no longer serviceable. I have had to throw away optics that were still usable because I couldn’t stand their stickiness. 4. Brightness of image: A minor con. My eyes are not as good as they used to be. I was using this scope at an indoors event under artificial lighting. While the image was clear, it was not very bright. I had available an inexpensive scope that had a 60 mm objective lens that delivered a noticeably brighter image than this one. While this is an unfair comparison as the larger objective gathers 44% more light, more expensive lenses could compensate for this shortcoming without adding much more size or weight, but then the cost would be several times more than what it is currently. CONCLUSION With this Roxant Blackbird scope, the compromise is that you get 85% of the performance of a high-end optic of similar form factor at a 75% discount. This represents a tremendous value. For those looking for an inexpensive compact spotting scope that gets the job done for ten meter air rifle shooting, this is a very good option and should be on your short list.Time will tell if the scope will be durable and survive the less than gentle handling by the kids in our program. I will update this review periodically if there is any change in my opinion.

This is a great scope in it's price range. It has very clear optics and a somewhat ruggedized outer finish on a mostly metal shell which gives it a reassuring heft. It's also solid, with no play in the joints or rattling parts inside Captured lens caps at both ends, as well as extendable rubber/plastic shrouds which help to block the sun both from the objective lens and your eye. It comes with a bench-height tripod, but also mounts to a standard 1/4" camera tripod. The zoom and focus controls are intuitive and smooth, and I had no problems focusing sharply on anything I wanted to look at with it. I bought it to use while target shooting with a rifle, and so far I've used it out to 100 yards very successfully. Based on the image at that range, I think it's probably effective in that application out to 200, maybe 300 yards depending on what you're shooting at and with what you are shooting. Certainly that far with steel targets, but small calibers on good old paper or cardboard might be more difficult past 100. I also have a Barska spotting scope that I paid about the same money for, and this one is much brighter and clearer and a better overall experience. The eye relief gets shorter at higher factors of magnification, which is true of all optics. At 36x I have to take my sunglasses off to look through it effectively. The bag it comes with is pretty tight, which makes it tough to zip up with the quick-connect from my tripod on it. The case also lacks a pocket for the lens cloth to go in, but that's probably the worst thing I can say about it. You're probably going to be disappointed if you wanted a scope for the 1000 yard range, but for short-range target shooting or bird-watching or what-have-you, you could do a heck of a lot worse than this scope. I feel like I got my money's worth.

I bought this scope with the intention of using it at the range to view targets up to 200 yards away (max distance in my area). INITIAL IMPRESSIONS : Nice packaging. The carrying case (with scope inside), instructions and tripod are the first things you see when you open the box. The tripod is made of metal with a really tough black coating and when I opened it up on my table, it was super sturdy. No wiggle at all and the rubber feet really locked it into place. The arm that allows you to adjust the angle of the scope has a smooth articulation to it and, when tightened down, secures the scope into place very well. The bag feels like a lightweight nylon but it will absolutely work fine in my range bag to protect the scope from anything that might bust it up in there. Roxant should look into creating am after-market neoprene case for it! The scope is tiny. As you can see in the pictures, the length of the scope is 9" long and is just under 1lb. 2oz. In the hand, it feels like a quality piece. The dials have just the right amount of resistance and the caps also had the right amount ensuring they wouldn't just fall off on their own. The rubber coating feels of high quality and the matte black finish is clean clean clean. It'd be pretty sweet if they offered it in coyote tan and od green. PERFORMANCE : I quickly mounted the scope to the tripod and checked out the view across the street. WOW! The image I had of my neighbors dishTV antenna was incredible. That weekend, I took it into Manhattan while visiting my sister and was able to get an incredibly clear image of a building peaking over the top of some trees in central park. You can see in the picture how far I was and I don't have any attachment to connect my phone. I just placed the lens of my phone camera over the view scope and took that close-up shot... that image was crystal clear when viewing properly. I plan on taking the scope to the range this weekend and will post more pics and an update to my review ASAP. CONCLUSION : If you're in the market for a range scope, I'd highly recommend this one. The form and function of this product (ESPECIALLY in this price range) is absolutely amazing. While I planned on using this mainly for the range, I could definitely see my self packing it for a day hike with the kids so they can explore our surroundings through the scope during breaks. Thanks for getting this far. I hope I helped with your buying decision.

Being both a bird-watcher and a target shooter, I had two fears when I decided to buy this scope; first, that it might not be able to focus at a close enough distance, and second, that it wouldn't be powerful enough. My first fear was because I wanted to get a close-up view of the birds that come to our main feeder, located only about 25 feet from our window, (I have a 20 power telescope and it can't focus that close). My second fear was because I sometimes shoot at targets located about 100 yards distance, and I've seen some scopes with 60 power that aren't sharp enough for the job – some of them were just about useless at the higher magnifications. I need not have worried, this little Roxant scope performs like a champ. It's close focusing distance is about 21 feet and brings the birds right in close. And the field of view is wide enough to see the entire feeder even at higher magnifications. As far as being powerful enough for seeing targets at 100 yards, the optics are so good that the 36 power maintains a sharp, crisp image that beats many of the 60 power scopes I've seen. I guess the BAK4, fully-coated optics really pay off. I am really impressed with the quality of construction, the controls are smooth and positive and easy to use. The little tripod is solid and is handy when shooting from a bench. I have a large camera tripod that I use for bird-watching and the Roxant, with its standard camera fitting, screws right on. I've lost several lens caps over the years, and appreciate how this scope has the front cap attached so it's handy and can't be lost. I research my purchases and agonized over which scope to buy. I didn't want to pay a fortune, but wanted something that would do the job. I know that I made the right choice with this little scope.
