Don't be timid - the ceramic wick never burns, the fuel burns quickly, the smell is mild.

The white "cotton pad" rectangle that comes in the box is the wick, and it's made of ceramic wool. It will never burn. It's there to stretch the fuel into a miniature horizontal wall. You can lower the flame an inch by stuffing the wick down and raise the flame (within reason) by tugging the wick up half an inch. The fuel burns VERY quickly (30m) and yes, yes, with a mild fuel smell. Not dense like natural gas or propane. Barely there. No one in my family cares. It's pretty and gives a useful amount of heat up close. I haven't tried marshmallows because I don't want to get food on it. Not fun to clean. But most of all, it's as safe as you're going to get for having a literal open flame in a metal box on your dining table. I've literally spilled the fuel, didn't notice, lit the flame... and the burning spilled fuel evaporated so quickly we barely had time to register "wait fire?" before it was gone on its own. Nothing was harmed at all. Not that anyone's advising you test it. Fire is fire. Use smart caution and enjoy the hell out of this little thing. Be prepared to continuously invest in the fuel replacement wick if your wick becomes physically destroyed. (Otherwise it will last longer than you and I will live.) The replacement wick is called Regal Flame Ventless Bio Ethanol Fireplace Fuel Ceramic Wool Wick Sponge. Not sure what dimensions to purchase. My cats shredded my wick so I need to replace.

LOVE this little fireplace

LOVE this little fireplace. It is perfect for our table out on the deck. Creates much more of a flame than I was expecting when I got the box. I wanted something without a propane tank that was easy to use and this is it. Perfect for watching with a nice glass of wine as we head into fall.

Great Atmosphere

It has a certain charm and definitely delivers on atmosphere. I wish it burned a little longer but that's not a major issue. I liked it so much I bought another one.

Really Amazing Purchase!

This item arrived much earlier than estimated delivery date! Bought it as a gift for a friend. It looks amazing and matched her living room decor perfectly! My only complaint is that it did not come with any instructions, which is kind of dangerous. We had to google the instructions on how to use it which was a little inconvenient.

Don't hesitate (and I'm super critical)!

These little boxes are super cool! Don't hesitate to buy one. We put three in our fireplace and we think it looks just beautiful. They fit perfectly and it fills the fireplace space. All three going actually warmed our living room pretty quickly. Also, don't buy the expensive fuel. We purchased a gallon of denature alcohol for $15 at Lowe's and it works great with no odor. The instructions read it voids the warranty, but come on. It's a metal box with a stainless steel insert with a wick. What's going to get damaged???

Small, but mighty. My wife and I love it.

We moved and our new condo has no fireplace. We used to really enjoy our fireplace and missed it. We thought we'd give this thing a try. It really does the trick. It produces a nice flame and even some heat. It's incredibly easy to assemble and stores compactly. It doesn't burn very long (maybe 1.5 hours at most), but that is usually sufficient time for us.

Relaxing Flames

When I first bought this, my fiancé was a bit skeptical as he thought it was going to burn our home down. However after a few uses he's eased up and actually finds it relaxing. As another review stated, we try to limit our use as the ethanol burns through fairly quickly. I still love it though
