I recently purchased the Drinkwell Ceramic Lotus fountain to replace my 3 year old plastic Drinkwell 360. I don't think it holds as much water, but it makes a nice sound while on, stays cleaner for longer, and has fewer parts. Definitely better than the latter in my book. And it seems like my cats prefer the Lotus more too! :P You do have to purchase charcoal filters (these!) and white, mesh material filters. I don't understand why the charcoal ones come 4 to a pack while the mesh ones come with only 2. Grrr! Be sure to run the charcoal filters under cool water for awhile, even after the water runs clear, so it doesn't cloud the water in the fountain once you've filled it and turned it on.

These filters do a fantastic job making sure that my cat drinks as much as is regularly required. She does not enjoy standing water and this helps keep the older water fresh tasting. You must meticulously rinse out the charcoal filter to avoid particles which can be seen in a white fountain. But, the particles do not seem to affect the taste since the cat does not mind when they are there. The filters are a very good price and it is easy to change the filter every week or 2.

I consider myself an expert on the PetSafe fountain, (at least the Avalon). I have had mine for 18 months and have the cleaning breakdown, reassembly process down and could probably do a hell of a Youtube video but I'm don't have time. I now only buy the original Drinkwell filters. I found a cheaper Chinese knock-off that was a 12 pack and thought I would save some money, I was wrong. Don't buy the Chinese imitation. They clog up in 2-3 days to the point it stops flowing completely. It made me think; what the hell is in them to make them totally jam up? Depending on your water source, (city tap water or bottled) it will make a difference. When I find an abandoned bottle of water in the house I pour it in the bowl, other than that I use tap. Every 5 days I do a complete breakdown on the fountain and it takes 5 minutes. Fill a sink with dish washing detergent and get a toothbrush and a abrasive sponge. Take apart the pump assembly with a pairing knife where it comes apart by the inlet screen. Pop off the plastic rotor cover with a knife and pluck out the magnetic rotor/shaft. Clean it out, algae from bacteria from saliva accumulates in the motor and clogs it up. Flush everything under the faucet, you don't want any soap left or you'll get your pet sick or have diarrhea. The sponge pre-filter needs attention also. This fills up with hair and globules of algae. Wash it out and replace it every 2 weeks or every 3 filter cycles, let stay in for a month without a cleaning and it can turn into a bacteria farm. You will also notice on the sides of the porcelain fountain upright become gritty due to calcium build up. Use a scouring pad or sponge with Comet or similar to make it smooth again. Put it all back together and don't try to fill it in the sink and walk it over (I learned the hard way dumping water all over the floor). Set it up dry but don't plug it in yet. Blow on the A/C connector end from the motor to get the water out and go back to the sink with a large pitcher and fill it up. Pour it up to 1/2 inch to the brim of the bowl, then plug it in. Always keep the bowl 1/2 inch from the brim. If you ever plug it back in, and it doesn't pump, you need to take the motor assembly apart and clean down in the rotor tube. I've had chunks of algae get stuck in there. That's all I got, the product does save me time though versus cleaning a bowl out every day, but the benefit to your pet is an attractive watering hole that encourages drinking more. JT

After having a different fountain for over 8 years I recently purchased the fountain that uses these filters. With my old Fountain I would get super frustrated because at least once a week I would have to use bleach to kill whatever was growing in it. It just got worse and worse with time and eventually it stopped working. With this new fountain, after about a month I'll start to see that seem stuff growing on this filter. But it never expands into the other parts of the fountain, and once I change the filter it's good to go again. It is important to keep changing the filter every month or so though, or not only does that stuff grow, it slows down the flow of the water so that it's barely even a fountain. Totally worth it, way less cleaning and I don't have to try to mess with bleach and then rinsing the fountain over and over again concerned that my animals will have bleach residue in their water.

I used to find that our dogs drinking water would get an icky slimy feeling after only a day or so. It bothered me a lot, so I finally purchased the pagoda water fountain (on sale with an additional coupon from Petco - worth the wait) and haven't regretted it! We have an RO system, as we live in a hard water area. I use these charcoal filters and switch them out once a month, at the same time as the foam filters. After a month the charcoal filter and foam filter has a very slight "fish-tanky" smell if I put it right up to my nose, so honestly it might be better to do the switch every three weeks perhaps, but the water is never slippery feeling. Our dog used to refuse to drink from her water dish when it wasn't perfectly clean (after a day or so), and she hasn't ever stopped drinking from the pagoda fountain with my current cleaning schedule (she used to bark once when we were running water at the sink, to let us know she needed water, so she knows how to tell me when her water isn't fresh lol) I have found that the foam filters do catch any hair, dust, the occasional gnat etc before the water goes through the motor so I am sure that the foam filters will increase the life span of the motor (I will post this review there too) I believe that these charcoal filters keep the water fresh for much longer. I used the fountain a couple of times without these filters, the first time I ran out, and the water seemed to get slimy again immediately. I top up the water daily and pull it all apart and clean everything once per week religiously. When I clean everything I run water through the charcoal filter and shake it out a few times. I also clean the foam filter really well before re-assembling it all. I don't put it in the dishwasher, just wash out everything with very hot water (except the motor which I rinse out with cold) Very pleased with this whole set up, and it is well worth the few minutes it takes once a week to clean it, and our dog does drink more water than before. And I feel much, much happier now that it never feels slimy, plus I like the indoor water fountain calming trickle. One comment on the sound though, it does get a lot louder if the water level is low, particularly as we have it on a tiled floor in an open plan kitchen/TV area. The changing sound level helps remind me to top it up so that's probably a good thing! If the water level is no more than 1/2-1" below the edge then the water sound is very zen!

While I wish they made a re-usable filter, these are branded filters which fit the Drinkwell fountains (I have the Pagoda). It's nice being able to buy them on here at a reasonable price so I don't have to hunt for them locally. When I get these I rinse them with water and run some water through them in both directions to clear some of the loose charcoal. Then each time that I wash the fountain I do the same thing again to rinse these out. Usually I can do that a couple times before I feel like they're dirty and should be replaced. Typically that's at least a month. Only in one case so far have I had one filter that would repeatedly plug up and slow the fountain - each time I rinsed it, it would get better for a bit before plugging up again. That one didn't last quite as long. There are multiple sellers with these on Amazon, so make sure to check the price per unit. In some cases buying three of these 4-pack's can be less expensive than buying a 12-pack depending on the seller.

Not sure there is too much to say about a carbon filter for my cat/dog water fountain but since I love the water fountain and the filter makes the fountain - then I love the filters too! :) The box says to change then out weekly but I'm not that good at attention to detail and I always let it go a bit longer - like a month or so. As long as the fountain puts out strong water, I give this a solid rinsing weekly and put it right back in. But about every 4 weeks I give the fountain a deeper cleaning and change this out. Both my cats and my small dog love the fountain and the cats are less stressed since we purchased it so we are happy pet owners of happy pets!

really great! does it's job at keeping the water clean! just be sure to rinse like the instructions state before installing to get out excess filter stuff.... a little inconsistent though... one filter lasted a week, another filter lasted nearly a month before the water flow slowed.... maybe its the filter...maybe its the dust/fur/stuff getting in my fountain... I noticed the filter last longer when I keep the area around the fountain cleaner.. and their food bowl slightly away so they don't drop any food in...either way, cats seem to love it as I need to refill my fountain every 3 days or so :) --- a tip: if you live in a hot summer climate, add some ice cubes to the bowl to keep the water nice and cool - cats love this.

These are the correct, official filters for the PetSafe fountains. I see there has been some concern about fake/third-party filters not working well. I have the pagoda-style fountain, and it all but stopped working for a while. I found out later it was because I'd failed to replace the filters! Once I replaced this filter and the foam filter, it started working again like new. Make sure you replace your filters! Definitely rinse/soak it well before putting it in the fountain. I noticed I hadn't rinsed it well when I turned on the fountain and a little black cloud came out. Easy to clean the water out again, but do go the extra step to avoid this.

I used to be like "others" and complain that some filters would seem to "stop up" after just a day or two. After doing a lot of experimenting I have concluded that the life of these filter, all filters actually depend on the quality of water you put into the fountain. Without naming names, I will say that "city water" and certain brands of drinking water you buy at the supermarket are not all equal. I have found that during the warm/hot months, water quality drops tremendously; city and store bought water. With this said, if you want to increase the life of your filters, spend the extra few cents to purchase water from a more reputable company. Again, I can not name names as this would be against the rules here. Do the math, cheap water/ low filter life or better water and longer filter life. I have been using fountains now for going on 10 years and yes, I have seen/tried both the good and bad of products on the market. Taste the water for yourself. If it tastes bad/weird then why would you give to your pets. Just my two cents worth.
