(Use plastic bottles to better protect the product from damage)

These are just what I needed. We went on vacation for 5 days and these worked great! The 750ml wine bottles fit perfect. I just put the spikes in at an angle first and then put my wine bottles in (the instructions showed to put the spikes in with wine bottle already inserted). I like them so much I ordered another set. They came packaged very securely.I had a garage sale last weekend and I got so many compliments on putting wine bottles in my planters. Would definitely order again.

I have a ranch in New Mexico where it is sunny, dry and windy. Watering plants, especially the garden, is difficult because the hot sun and the wind tends to dry the soil out and evaporate away any attempted irrigation. In other words, the plants don't stand much of a chance. These watering stakes have changed everything. We now successfully grow much of our own food, and we use less water than ever. What makes these watering stakes so useful is that the water goes directly to the plants roots, instead of just evaporating away. And, if that weren't enough, just exactly the right amount of water gets the plant, so you never over water or underwater. I cannot recommend this product enough.

Amazing for Pleco Caves - Perfect

I have been using these with my greenhouse plants and have found them to be the most reliable mode of watering out there. The plant takes what it needs and overwatering is a thing of the past. I use them with and without bottles. Be sure and push them into the soil before inserting the bottle or they might break.

I use water crystals and water crystal mats when possible. Last year was the first year I used these ( different brand, but same type) I used in hanging planter with petunias in full sun at a seasonal/summer home. this kept my hanging planter plants alive all summer and into fall by keeping planter moist between waterings. If planting from scratch in planter put in soil and backfill with dirt and plants... If in a pre-bought planter, make sure you use a screw driver or something to make a hole in dirt in middle of pot ( without damaging plants) and gently...repeat - gently push down into soil. They can be fragile if trying to force in soil without a hole already. But they do work great. I use regular glass wine bottles, but the plastic wine bottles I see being sold would be nice since probably less stress on the terracotta.

Gardening is a process which takes time. My set just arrived and I am observing these items now. They look more durable than reviewers stated. They are porous enough to pass water through. We had a nasty heat wave this week while I was away. I will give a update in a week. UPDATE. They have a watering limit of around eight days for a 750 ml wine bottle. I give it a fourth star for that. I checked the soil after an eight day absence and it was still damp. I checked again after three days my soil was damp and the bottle held half it's volume in water. my plants look great and I love this item. My final upgrade is to five stars.

I am not using this product as intended. I wanted some hideouts for my kuhli loaches and the ones at the fish store were $20! I got 4 of these for about $10 shipped! They are a nice thick terra cotta with no hole in the back that fish might get stuck in. I soaked them in tank water before putting them in my tank. The fish love them! I have 2 in a 20L and I will put the others in my other tanks for shrimp! I'm happy with my purchase!

Tried them for a week before I was gone for 10 days. Found that I needed at least two in the largest (~16-18"). One larger pot could have used three, as it was drooping a little when I returned. However, they kept my plants looking good and I would highly recommend them for short vacations. I'm leaving them in a couple of smaller pots where the plants are prone to need consistent water.

I saw a YouTube video about someone who used these to help get rid of fungus gnats in house plants. I've had the same problem. These help because the top of the soil gets dry so the gnats can't lay eggs. They're only good for bigger potted plants. I have broken one pushing the spike with the bottle into the pot. I glued the pieces that broke on top. As suggested in some of the reviews I read, make a hole first, gently work the spike and bottle into the soil. If you try to push too hard, the spike can break. All in all, I love it and it looks great. I want to find colored bottles to add to the charm.

I have been having difficulty in over-watering my fruit trees in 24-inch-diameter plant pots (had killed two trees already). First I tried the plastic watering globes (large size). They help but I need to use two and refill water twice a week. I also need to clean the soil out of the long neck of a water globe before refilling water. They are a bit of messy and not very convenient. These terracotta spikes used with wine bottles are perfect for my large potted plants. Each one is ~7 inch long. I dug a straight hole to bury the spike until ~1-1.5 inch lip exposed in the air to prevent the dirt going in. The buried length gives enough mechanical support for the clay spike to support the water bottle. Terracotta material acts like sieve to slowing flow the water out. Since the water bottle is upside-down and seals the spike, mosquito larvae cannot live inside the the water. It has been two weeks and my orange and peach trees seem to drink water happily with triple-digit temperature under the scorching sun in Fresno, California
