traveler's best friend.
i purchased this because my dog is fat and is now on strict diet. typically i fed her in the morning and at night - but now she eats 4 small meals a day. because i work, this wasn't an option for me.. until i bought this feeder. additionally, i travel for work a couple days here and there and found it difficult (and expensive) to find pet sitters/kennels on short notice and that i trusted with my baby. setting it up was easy. one slight irritation - once you program the desired meal times, if the feeder loses power, those feeding times are reset - however, the feeder takes batteries - so i plan on getting some to use in case the power were to go out for whatever reason. this creates an issue if im out of town and the times reset and i dont know it... but poor baby wouldnt get fed - unacceptable. i sound stupid on the recording but it does work - the food drops out at the scheduled time, my dog hears it from across the house and RUNS to the bowl as if she's starving (fat) and then i can hear the little message play twice. you can set the meal sizes differently as well - currently i have 2 small meals and 2 larger meals set for fatty cakes and she's been doing well with it. i recommend this feeder and would purchase again

Well designed, consistent, and user friendly.
This is the second automatic feeder for our dog (75 pound mutt) that we've tried; the first was the "PetSafe Healthy Pet Simply Feed" which worked -- ok -- for a little under 18 months. We began to have an issue with the mechanism jamming and not dispensing food on an inconsistent basis. It became a big enough issue where we never knew for sure if our dog got enough food if we weren't there to watch it dispense. She would never let on either way, which didn't help. This unit is priced much more reasonably, is easier and more user friendly to set up and control, and the mechanism seems to me to be a better design. A few more points: * The hopper, which I believe is a little smaller than the other unit we tried in the past, has a clear top and the food level is easily seen. There were a couple of unfortunate instances where our old dispenser ran out of food, causing a (temporary) missed meal. * This unit includes a wall plug, which is available with the other unit but at additional cost. As of this morning, pricing out the other unit with an adapter comes in at just under 150 dollars. There is still a battery back-up for this dispenser, so if you lose power your pet will still get fed. *This dispenser is much easier to program and doesn't require holding onto a two sided reference sheet of commands for future reference like our old unit. Granted, the old unit allowed other features like slow feeding mode, additional feeding times, and early, manual dispensing of food which then automatically skips the next scheduled feeding. This dispenser is more basic, with 4 available feeding times in a day (breakfast, lunch, dinner, and "4th meal") which worked just find for us. Our dog's feeding needs are pretty basic. If I had a complaint, it would be with the initial "fine tuning" needed to get the pet's portion correct. It's based on grams, and each rotation of the hopper delivers 10 grams. So we weighed 2/3 of a cup of dog food, rounded up (our dog would not appreciate rounding down) and we gave that a try. First meal came out a little on the large size (dog did not complain) so we backed it off a bit and got it pretty close on our second try. If I was to do it over again, I'd keep hitting the manual dispense button (each time cycles one hopper of food) until we filled up the appropriate feeding cup. As long as you keep track of how many it takes to do that (6 for us) you should be pretty much set. All in all, for under 90 dollars my wife and I feel this is a better dispenser than our previous purchase. It includes a power adapter, seems to have a better feed / hopper mechanism, and has just enough features so as to not over-complicate the programming and day to day use. If this continues to hold up for us (and exceeds the 18 months we got out of the other product!) we definitely recommend it.

This feeder is the BEST. I can go for over 2 weeks on ...
This is the second automatic feeder that I have bought. The other brand was a JOKE! It was hard to set up the feed schedule and when the batteries went dead, you had to reset it all over again. This feeder is the BEST. I can go for 2 weeks on vacation and it does not run out.I love that you have the option to plug it in the wall outlet and it's very easy to change the feed times and amounts. My cat was getting over weight on the self feeder and this was the best way to control the amount of cat food she could eat per day.She gets her breakfast at 600 her lunch at 1400 and her dinner at 2100 o'clock. When she hears the feeder calling...she runs through the house to get there!I love it and so does she.

Works well, easy to program
My step-cat was used to unfettered access to all areas of the living space prior to moving in with me. Due to my allergies as well as her fondness for dumping whole glasses of cold water on me in my sleep, she is no longer allowed to be in the bedroom at night. This isolation is clearly bothering her as evidenced by the continual and repeated scratching at the bedroom door, generally 1-2 hours in advance of when her impatient self expects to be fed. I bought this automatic feeder hoping to disassociate myself and my fiancee from the feeding process and maybe leave us the hell alone at night for once. In that regard, it has worked quite well. The feeder comes with two different dispensing "paddles," one for large food and one for smaller kibbles. it ships with the large one installed, but it only takes a screwdriver and about 10 minutes to swap them out. All of the food contact surfaces (bin, paddles, dish) can be removed and hand washed which is nice. I was a little concerned that the cat would find a way to knock the device over and get to the food reservoir, but it is pretty sturdy and the lid latch is designed with a nice "child lock" feature that will keep animals from getting in. Programming the meal size and schedule was surprisingly easy. The instructions are not quite perfectly translated, but if you have programmed an automatic coffee maker before you could probably figure this thing out without the instructions after poking around for a little bit. The voice record function is fun, although I don't think the cat realizes it is my voice coming from the Food Robot. Overall, I am very pleased with the quality of this automatic feeder, and it has significantly reduced the amount of hassling I receive from my beloved step-cat. If she has complaints I just tell her to take it up with the robot.

Could be great - ordering a replacement unit
I think I got a defective one, so I'm returning it and buying a new unit. (Mine might have been used before, but I'm not sure -- the box had been opened along a side seam, but that could have been a weak seam, and there was pre-recorded background noise on the audio, but I suppose that could have been from the factory). It failed the manual feeding test in step 1 of the users guide. It fed 8 portions instead of 1 most times. I tried using it for a day anyways just in case it was just a manual feeding problem, I was hoping it's work ok on it's own -- but it dispensed *way too much* food. I'm trying to find a way to give a cat who eats too much too quickly, which causes her to vomit, just a little kibble at a time. So overfeeding is a fatal flaw for the feeder in this case. I hope the next one works, it's a great little machine. I'll update my review after I set up the next feeder. ---- UPDATED REVIEW 8/31/18 ---- I ordered a second unit, and I've been using it for about two months now. It gives the correct serving size of kibble unlike the first feeder, so I think it's safe to say the first one was a defective unit. It does exactly what I need it to do, which is to give small portions of kibble to my cat at timed intervals. The voice recording feature is a dud however, and while that's one of the reasons I chose this over other, similar feeders, I am still satisfied with the feeder overall. If you want more details about the voice recording/play back feature, here's what the unit I have does: The voice recording is very faint and distorted sounding, even though I talked right into the microphone area. I recorded a second time, talking louder this time, and instead of recording over the first message, it recorded an additional message. So now there are two, very soft and odd sounding messages that play. Also, I thought the message would play before kibble was dispensed, but it plays after kibble is dispensed. I liked the idea of my voice calling the kitty to the feeder, but her cue to come over is the sound of the motor starting to rotate. My voice plays after she's already started eating.

Awesome auto feeder.
Our cat is overweight. I would feed her in the morning and find out later she would eat all the food and ask for more from another family member while I was gone. NOT ANYMORE! This feeder performs as advertised and now the guessing game is over. I set it to feed her before I get up and she doesn't wake me up demanding food like she did previously. I like that the feeder refills easily and has both wall and battery power sources. It's also nice to know she won't overeat over the weekend if we leave.

I really like this pet feeder
I really like this pet feeder. It is very well made and the dish good sized and straight forward on programming pet meals and meal size is easy to adjust bigger or smaller. My only fault is that it is only 4 day capacity. But otherwise it is a gem. I previously purchased a different pet feeder from Amazon which was about a $100 more! It was very complicated to program and never operated the way it was said that it would. I finally sent it back and waited 4 months to buy this one primarily based on customers ratings. I recommend this feeder. It's a keeper

Great unit! My big dog loves it!
Love this feeder! There’s only a couple little “quirks” to know before you purchase though.. 1) it’s programmed in military time (24:00)... know the conversion. Lol ! 2) the meal serving measurements are a bit difficult. With trial and error, i learned! I’ll make it easy for you as another reviewer did-each “serving” is TINY. 12 servings equals about 2 cups of food. I’m using the larger auger as I have a big dog that eats bigger kibble. He gets 6 “servings” at 6:30am, 8 servings at noon and 12 servings at dinner time around 6:30pm. 3) when recording your voice - the tiny pinhole next to the “MIC” button IS the microphone- try not to cover it with your finger while pressing to record or you’ll be very muffled. 4) if you’re using the cable to plug it into the wall-the wall plug the unit comes with sticks out from the wall pretty far. I swapped out the one it comes with and use my iPhone wall cube instead. Overall, I love this unit! It’s helping to keep my Blackmouth Cur’s weight where it needs to be. He’s no longer gorging himself on one big bowl of food once or twice a day-he now gets smaller portions throughout the day. A great buy!

can set times
I purchased this feeder because I finally got tired of my two pushy, food-motivated cats waking me up to be fed on weekend mornings. I only wish I had purchased it earlier! It has worked great for the six months I’ve had it, though I did make a couple of modifications to it so it better serves my needs. The food tray that comes with the feeder was too small to accommodate both of my large cats eating at the same time, so I removed it and placed a square melamine tray under the feeder instead. This way, both cats have room to eat and the lip of the tray keeps the food from being scattered across the floor when it’s dispensed. I also placed a piece of black duct tape over each of the two empty spaces at the bottom of the feeder where the food tray would normally snap in. Pieces of food were getting stuck in these crevices and it would frustrate the cats when they were unable to dislodge the pieces. Since I added the tape, this hasn't been a problem. I live in an 800 sq. ft. apartment, so I can hear the low noise made by the motor when it's dispensing food, as well as the louder sound of the food hitting the tray. I stopped noticing the sounds after the first few days of use, and though I am a heavy sleeper, this hasn't bothered any overnight guests so far. My cats recognize the sound of the motor engaging and they will race to the feeder when they hear it, so I don't use the voice recording function. The cats haven’t been able to get any food out of the feeder when it's not in use, despite their best efforts. One cat still tries to break into it sometimes and will unplug the cord from the back of the feeder. This is where the battery backup feature comes in handy!

Such a good idea! Solved my cat's food stress!
I purchased this automatic feeder before heading off on a four day trip. Normally I leave my cat at a sitter's house she is comfortable with but this time my cat sitter was coming along so I needed something to keep the food coming while I was away. I had friends coming to give her wet food and love at her dinner time each night but was worried about the dry food; kitty is on a feeding schedule that she has memorized and would get very stressed if it was deviated from. In the past my cat would get very upset whenever she got low enough on her dry food to see any part of the bottom of the bowl. Even if the bowl was half-full and she had just pushed the kibbles around enough to see a sliver of the bottom she would start pacing and yowling. Additionally whenever I would add more food to the bowl she would binge sometimes to the point of puking. This feeder solved all of her food stress problems and has been a great weight control tool too. I currently have it set to feed her 1 serving every 6 hours (5a, 11a, 5p, 11p) with a double serving given at 5a. With this feed setting she generally runs out of food 5-6 hours after the last feeding meaning she is without food for an hour or so before it feeds her again. Despite this she has no stress over the dry food now because she knows the machine will always feed her at the same time. She will sometimes go sit in front of it a few minutes before feeding time waiting for it to do its thing but except for the first day she has never yowled at me to feed her more. She also doesn't binge like before, perhaps because she knows more will always come later. This has been great for weight control too. My vet has been telling me for years to restrict her dry food diet but her behaviors made it impossible before. Now that she is getting a specific quantity each day I've noticed some weight loss and am looking forward to hearing what the vet has to say. I really can't recommend this highly enough. It has reduced stress for both me and especially the cat. It is directly contributing to her weight loss and has eliminated binge-eating and the resulting vomit. It even helps to even out her blood-sugar levels by distributing her meals evenly throughout the day.
