Fantastic camera, fast to add to the base

I am including my review for the base at the end of this review for the camera, because the two go hand in hand. I added a second camera and to say that it was fast and VERY easy is to say the least. I pushed the button on top of the base, pushed the one camera and the base IMMEDIATELY picked up the camera. It prompted for a firmware update, did it, let me rename the camera and presto, new camera running. The first camera was just as easy to add as the first so this was not a fluke at all. The only thing you have to know is that the camera must be within a few feet of the bast or you will not be able to add it initially. Once it is all added you can move it to another location, in range of your wireless network. If you want to use any kind of recording you need to give it power too. Video quality is top notch and it integrates well with Wink and IFTTT. BE WARNED, this camera system needs a base and the base has to be done in specific way as you can see in my review of the base PROS ON THE CAMERA: Ridiculously easy set up, push two buttons and do two steps in the software and you are set. Flexible camera placement Integrates with Wink, Smart Things and other IFTTT automation with smart zones. So far so good

This is my current situation for 3 cameras setup Front door (battery operated, motion detection, recording about 20-25 clips daily mostly human. Duration of the clips are ranging from 10 seconds to 5 minutes) Back door (battery operated, motion detection, recording about 20 clips weekly, mostly squirrels or chipmunks. Duration of the clips are mostly 10 seconds) Livingroom, (AC power to keep the battery fully charge and ready to switch out with either front or back door when the battery running low. No recording, just viewing purpose. The front door battery lasted from March 18 to April 13 (little shine of 1 month). On April 13, a message display on a black background stating that the battery only has 15% of juice left and asking me to replace the battery. Live view stop working, no button lid up when touched on the screen, everything stop even though I have 15% of juice left. I swapped out the battery and everything went back online. The backdoor battery is at 80% as of today April 16,. The living room is ac power so nothing to report. The setup of the camera system is basically idiot proof, 10 minutes and you are ready to view. I had to purchase a metal mound for the front door and not using the magnet that came with the camera. This won’t stop thief from stealing my camera but at least buying me time to capture some one face or description. It is impossible for the thief to unmount my camera without looking at the camera first. The magnet mount should be efficient for other location. So far so good and I am loving it. I wish the live view screen refresh quicker. I had a few occasions where someone at the door ringing the bell and by the time I sign on to the app using finger print and then tap on the live view button, the person already turn around and left thinking that no one was home.

Ease of configurability and installation

For anyone looking for home security cameras/system...consider Arlo/Netgear. Really impressed with the flexibility of the app and the ease of configurability as well as multiple options for scheduling. Zoom and record options are appropriate for our needs as well as video quality. There is also a community where they collect ideas and continue to improve the product. You have outside developers in the community giving feedback which is amazing and tells you that there's true interest in bettering Arlo. Price point...you will pay a little more but it's worth it in my opinion. We bought a six camera system from Amazon two years ago and the software was terrible and not highly configurable and did not give the convenience of an online recording library. This one is much easier and works 100%. My other camera system was much cheaper about half the price but is no comparison to this system. We bought the Arlo pro 2 - 4 camera system which is found on Amazon for $699. installation was a breeze. Complete in about 30 minutes as the system can be wired or wireless. Also you can purchase cool boots to hide the cameras and further protect them from the elements although they are not needed. This means if you want to install your camera in a tree and the wireless connection is good then go for it. The other great thing they did with this product is, you are able to connect to Amazon fire and see live video on your television simply by calling the camera with the Amazon TV remote. Connection was simple with the Alexa app. Also I did some research on Nest which I believe is their competitor and based on several reviews from YouTube, Arlo looked to be the better choice although I have not tried Nest. Hoping my review helps other shoppers.

Impressed by this camera system

I have had a Nest camera in my house for a couple of years and have always been pleased with the quality of the camera and the quality of the video. Problem is, to see videos you have to pay for yearly cloud storage. The Arlo was attracted to me because it comes with 7-day free cloud storage for videos. I purchased the two camera system to make sure I liked the Arlo, before adding additional camera's. Setting up of the base and camera's was very easy. The base does need to be attached to ethernet so make sure your wireless router has a free port or you will need to buy a switch to add additional ports. The cameras are wireless and just need to be mounted or placed on a flat surface. I placed the two wireless cameras outside, one to see the front door and patio and one to see the back and side of my house. To mount the cameras comes with a magnetic mounting ball, that attaches to a wall or to wood outside by a small screw. While it was easy to mount the magnetic base to place the wireless camera, it did not work for my setup. The magnetic base reduces the tilt and left/right placement of the camera. The magnetic basement is also a little less secure as it is easy for someone to walk by and just take the camera off the base. I ended up buying the Arlo 5 inch swivel mount for each camera. The swivel mount allows you to screw the camera into the base and the base have more flexibility in setting up the camera angle you need. The base gave me flexibility in securing one of my cameras on a tree in the backyard so I could get a good view of the back of our house and the side of our house. I had to make some adjustment to the backyard camera as it was picking up rabbits hopping by and it picked up some of the tree branches moving in the wind. The Arlo application gives you numerous setting and adjustments you can make to the camera. I reduced the motion sensitivity on the backyard camera so it doesn't pick up small animals going by. So far battery life has been good while learning what settings were best for my setup, the camera was turning on a lot because of motion and sound. That caused a little battery drop but surprisingly not very much. After a couple of days, both camera batteries show 98%. Battery life should be much better now that I have adjusted motion sensitivity settings Video quality is also good with 1080p resolution. I thought about just going with the Arlo Pro, which has 720p resolution but ended up going with the Pro 2 for better video quality and a few other features. I'm glad I made the investment for the better quality video. So far, I'm really happy with the quality of the Arlo camera system. Everything seems well engineered, the phone application works well, and battery life so far has been good. I'm going to add an Arlo Q for indoor monitoring in my basement where we have some windows. Over time I hope to add 1 or 2 additional wireless cameras outside for full coverage.

Ultimate in Paranoia Enablement

These are great cameras. You just throw them up wherever you want to look at something and bam, you're looking at it. I waited to review until I had a couple batteries die to see what the life is like and here's the thing about it. If your cameras are detecting a ton of motion and are pinging every few moments, the life sucks. I played with my sensitivity settings and aim to get them to trigger less and the life got much better. For perspective, I have one camera with a tree or two in frame that pings pretty regularly from birds, trees, ect. It lasted about a month. I have 2 more cameras looking at some pavement where not much goes on, they're still going strong at around half battery remaining. Your battery life is directly proportional to how frequently the cameras do camera things. Also, on a fairly middling sensitivity setting, one of my cameras got a cat. How cool is that?

Rename your phone if you have an iPhone and want to use geofencing

I wanted to wait a while before writing a review to see if any issues cropped up. I've had them in operation almost a month now. Very easy to install and set up. I bought the two camera model and after I got it up and running ordered three more cameras. Each camera paired with the base unit with no problems. Mounting hardware is easy to put up and as unobtrusive as a camera on your wall can be. My only issue was using geofencing with two iPhones. It wouldn't always register when my husband came and left and wouldn't arm and disarm the cameras. I used Netgear's online chat support and they recommended removing any special characters and spaces from the name of the phone. I did this and it seems to have fixed it. Since the default name for an iPhone is the user's name with - 's iPhone. I would say if you have an iPhone, rename it before you do the initial setup. Definitely if you want to use geofencing. Battery life is phenomenal. I just checked them before posting this. The lowest was over 80% charged. I've never charged them, just started using them with the charge from the factory. I have the video sensitivity set around 20-25 on all the cameras and never get a false positive. That might be why the battery life is so good. I used the video setup feature so I know it does register and I've gotten the UPS delivery guy before so it seems to do fine at that setting. Video and audio quality is excellent.

Need security? Look no further! BEST IN CLASS!

-=First Impressions=- Nice and secure packaging to protect hardware from damage. It white… very white! Not liking that since cameras are NOT supposed to be seen or attention drawn to them. I am sure this can be fixed with some sort of skin… yep, already ordered some. Looking through the box you get two magnetic mounts and NO OUTDOOR MOUNTS. Disappointing… have to shell out more cash. -=Build=- (7/10) Everything is made of plastic. Bright white plastic. This is how these can be made affordably. The cameras have a high gloss finish so they stand out anywhere you put them. The cameras feel light and cheap until you actually put the batteries in them… then they feel like solid cameras. The battery is built extremely well. There isn't any flex in the casing like you find in other cheap rechargeable battery packs. The mounts are plastic with a metal half sphere. I like these mounts for indoor use as they offer multiple angles and flexibility for aiming your cameras. However, these are NOT good for outdoor use since someone can just walk up and snatch your camera. To rectify this, Arlo has included a threaded mounting option for which they do NOT provide. You will need to shell out more money if you want to use these outdoors. Overall, I do not question if these will last. Above average build quality. -=Setup=- (9/10) These cameras were up and running in 10 minutes. If you can install an app on your phone or press a button you have all skills needed to make this work. Mounting where you want them takes the skill of creativity and planning to make sure you are getting the area you want most. All you do is give power to the base, plug the base into your router, and sync the cameras… that easy. The longest part was creating a login for Arlo which took all of 3 minutes. Out of the 10 minutes to get the cameras online, 3 of them you will be making an account unless you already have a Netgear account. If you want to use the Alexa skill, add another minute to setup because you have to link the skill to your Netgear account. -=Things I Love=- +Ease of Use/Setup - this is the fastest camera system I have ever setup. I have use ALL of the other competitors out there. +Arlo App - this app is the best! I can monitor ALL my cameras live if I want to as if I am in front of a security room with screens for each camera. You can have 2way conversations through the app, make camera adjustments, and zoom all in app. +Third Party Integration - the camera seamlessly integrates with Alexa. I love the ability to say Alexa, show me the backyard and I get a full screen (ON TV!) through my FireTV. It works with the Echo Show and Echo Spot well also. It also supports SmartThings, IFTTT, and Strinfigy too. +Free 7 Day Cloud Storage - I don't know of any other company offering a free option for cloud recording. All the others I've tried you have to play at least $3/device. Arlo gives you up to 5 devices on a 7 day plan for free. WINNER! +Battery Life - this battery is rated up to six months. This will all be contingent upon how much recording it does. I like the wired option for high traffic areas +Zones - this allows you to only turn on motion for a certain part of the video feed. If you have a pesky tree near it this will trigger lots of motion +Audio/Motion Triggers - this camera will turn on for sound or motion. Most cameras only will record if you have motion trigger them. +Doubles as Unmonitored Security System - the Arlo system includes a siren that can be triggered automatically if you set the rules to do so. It offers geofencing so if you are away and it detects you are not in your home, you can set rules to sound a siren much like ADT systems with ear piercing decibels. This could make an intruder think you have an alarm and force them to leave. +Secure Offsite Storage and Easy Downloads of Videos - if someone steals or disables your cameras, the recordings don't go with them. You have them stored online and easily accessible to upload or email to someone in the cloud. +Ability to record to USB - you can have a thumb drive plugged into the hub and it can record there for you also. Options if you don't like the cloud for your privacy. -=Things to be Improved=- -Lack of Outdoor Mount - for the price of this system, you should include at least one outdoor mount instead of charging over $20 for one. -Video Quality - you get 1080p but it is still very graining in low light situations. I don't get clear pictures at night but it isn't a wired system so I guess that is to be expected. -Alexa Skill - it would be nice to be able to do other functions besides just showing the feed. Features like 2-way communication and maybe zooming in from the remote or voice commands would be great. Maybe asking battery levels/connection strength of the cameras as well would be useful too. -High Gloss White Exterior - I would like to see other options rather than having a bright white camera as the only one. White is not a great color to conceal a camera and will attract attention of someone who wanted to steal the camera. -=The Verdict=- If you are looking at this, you probably are or have already researched the other names in the game. In my opinion, this is THE BEST system out there. If provides the most options and you can scale it to grow with you. I can foresee this becoming a security system much like Nest is trying to do. I like where this is going, and Netgear is definitely on the right track with providing value not found with its competitors. MUST BUY if you are in the market for wireless cloud recording security systems.

Long term it's actually cheaper than its competitors and it's a great system - what's not to love?

I did a lot of research before deciding to purchase the Arlo Pro 2. At first I took the Arlo off my "to be considered" list because of the price. Nest, Ring, August, Blink, Kuna, etc were all less expensive at first glance. But, looking at the features of the Arlo it occurred to me that the Arlo makes up for the initial investment because most of the important storage features you have to pay for every month on the other cameras were included with the Arlo. Seriously, do the math - somewhere in year 2 you'll be past break even with the Arlo. The Arlo was unique compared to a few of its competitors in that it had its own hub. I really didn't want to plug another hub into my router but I've found that the hub gives me very fast response to viewing videos, i.e., I don't have to go to some remote server somewhere to see what's going on. It also allows me to plug in a USB storage device if I want to keep things local. Nice. Setup was simple. The app has a setting that allows you to wander around to find the best location for the camera. I'm using the included magnetic mounts so I just screwed them into my house, positioned the camera and I was done. The cameras connect to the Arlo hub which Netgear says can be up to 300 feet away. My farthest camera is about 100 feet away so - no problems. Because the cameras are wireless and run on a rechargeable battery once it's mounted you're pretty much done. I'm keeping my eye on the batteries and I might plug one of them in full-time at one point because it's a fairly active area and I doubt that I'll get much more than a few months from a charge. I'm using the app on an Android phone and a tablet. Easy. I'm also able to quickly connect to the system when I'm away from the house to see what's going on. Because the cameras aren't permanently mounted I'll move one into my house to keep an eye on my dogs if I'm going to be away for the day. The expression on my dogs face when I tell her to get off the couch is priceless. I don't see how you can go wrong with this set-up. Easy to install, easy to use, great video quality, all the usual bells and whistles and you won't be writing a check each month for an inflated cloud storage account.

Arlo Base Station and Goggle Mesh, it works.

It works with my Google Mesh Network. My main Google Mesh Puck is on the first floor. I have another Google Mesh Puck in an upstairs bedroom. This is where I chose to locate the Arlo Base Station. I plugged the Arlo Base Station into the in/out Ethernet port of the Mesh Puck upstairs. Whithin 2 minutes I had 2 green lights and one yellow. This is what you should have before you attempt to syns the cameras. The batteries that came with the Arlo Pro 2 cameras where already charged at the factory. They synced quickly and without a hitch. After letting the Arlo base station and Arlo cameras to update their software, about 10 minutes total since I did each one separately, I was read to install the cameras. Your signal strength is realative only to the Arlo Base Station and not the Google Mesh Network. All 3 cameras need to be in range of the Base Station. I have no doubt that another 2 Arlo Base Stations could be connected to the remaining two Goggle Mesh pucks. You are limited to setting your Mode, Armed or Disarmed to the Arlo Base Station only. All 3 wireless cameras are limited to doing the same thing. I have 2 other Arlo Q cameras which function independently of the Arlo Base Station. These 2 cameras connect to the network via wireless to the Google Mesh. The magnetic mounts are very strong but for the 2 Arlo Pro 2 cameras that we're mounted outside I chose the screw in outdoor mounts. The indoor Arlo Pro 2 camera got a magnetic mounts. Now to see how long the batteries last. All in all I'm extremely sastisfied at this point. All 5 Arlo Cameras, 2 Arlo Q and 3 Arlo Pro 2 cameras are working well with the Arlo App on my Android Device.
