DO NOT LISTEN TO POOR REVIEWS!! Bought this for my dad for his birthday. Amazing product! He loved it! But, like others have stated, you can’t turn left or right with the JOYSTICK in some games. However, upon further investigation, I realized the reason behind this was because the PADDLES were still plugged in. If you leave the PADDLES plugged in then you WILL NOT be able to go left or right with the JOYSTICK in most games, so leave them unplugged unless you’re using them. This problem only effects the Deluxe Edition of these Atari Flashback consoles which include PADDLES and I think people just leave them plugged in. I feel bad for everyone who did not realize this and returned this amazing product. Overall, this is a definite must for Atari fans!

My favorite things about this console: - Small and lightweight, easy to carry around and store. - 120 games in a beautifully laid out and functional menu system, using the original cartridge box artwork. - HDMI connectivity, at 720p. Even though these games are nearly 40 years old, the video is crystal clear and the sound is great. - The ability to pause, save/load games, and replay to get through tough spots in games are outstanding new features. - Standard 2600 joystick controllers can be used, if you prefer them over the wireless ones. - "Yar's Revenge" and "Pitfall" are worth the price of admission alone. YR is such a great game, and I've so many fond memories of playing it for hours on end. I'd never even heard of the included "Yar's Return", which expands on the original game's challenges is some very cool ways. - "Space Invaders" isn't the original 2600 version, it the Taito arcade version. Awesome! - Most importantly, the trip down memory lane is a wonderful thing to enjoy. Here's some concerns I've read in various places, that perhaps I can help clear up: - Can't pause or save games: Granted, for some reason this isn't included in the instructions, but I easily found out how to display that menu using a Google search. Simply pull back on the joystick and press select to access it. - Screwdriver required to install batteries: The battery lid is held closed more securely with the single screw, which I actually prefer. If there wasn't one, I suspect the battery compartment could open accidentally during the rigors of play. Using a screw here was a great design decision. - No batteries included: Batteries that come with almost all products that require them are low-quality, so I usually install fresh Duracells anyway. - No HDMI cable included: Incorrect, it's even listed as being included on the outside of the box. - Cheaply made: Seems fine to me, especially considering the price. - Dead out of the box, quit after a few days, etc: Bad luck, which I sometimes have with all sorts of products. Just return anything defective and ask for a replacement. - Joystick controllers are infrared, and require line of sight to the console: Incorrect, they are 2.4GHz wireless controllers. - Paddle movement too tight: No worries, they "break in" with use in pretty short order. - Joystick movement too loose: Definitely looser than the original controllers, but I always thought they were a bit tight. - Joystick will not move left/right: As stated many times here already, you need to unplug the paddles if the game doesn't use them, then the joystick controllers will work just fine. - "Missing" games like Pacman, etc: You really need to research the games provided before your purchase. - Doesn't hold a candle to XBOX or PS4: Of course it doesn't. The original 2600 console and games were produced in the 80's. This is for retro gaming, and if you're not into that you obviously shouldn't be purchasing a console for that purpose. For old-school Atari fans like me, the features of this plug and play unit are an awesome value. * Note: I strive to write concise reviews with honest opinions to assist you as a potential buyer, and receive no monetary compensation for doing so. At first, I experienced the same problem as many of the other reviewers, that is the controller not being able to move side-to-side in the games, but I found that if you just unplugged the paddles and reset whatever game you were playing it worked fine.

After reading several of the reviews I hesitated to buy this, but my heart won out and I'm glad it did. My biggest concern was the many comments in regards to the controllers not working. When I received my Atari Flashback 8 Gold Deluxe I just simply grabbed a joystick, popped a couple of batteries in and started scrolling through the menu with ease. I then chose a game, hit start and nothing. At first I though "Here we go. I should have listened to the reviews." Then my younger 80s self kicked in and I took a closer look at the joystick I was using. This is when I realized that the one I picked was P2 (player 2). So I grabbed the P1 joystick, put in the batteries and everything worked like it should. Always remember the golden rule of old time gaming and in the words of Ernest Cline... Ready player one. Sorry for those of you who sent this product back needlessly as I'm enjoying it.

I received my Atari gold today and I’m very pleased with it. I played for hours, and I had no problems. It seems that a lot of people have problems with the games. As many people have noted, you need to unplug the paddles if you want to use the joystick, (i.e. user error.). I’m enjoying the games and it’s taking me back to high school and college when I spent a lot of time gaming. I’ll probably never be as good at these games as I was 35 years ago, but my eye to hand coordination is coming back, and that’s probably a good thing for an old broad like me.

I must be lucky because all four controllers work pretty good. It doesn’t mention in the description that it comes with one HDMI cable but it does. Nice surprise. I’m playing with my brother and our kids and the kids love it just as much we do! Memory lane with the kids is priceless and playing on a plasma tv with the HDMI, it looks very good.

Atari Flashback 8 Gold Deluxe with 120 Games - Includes 2 wireless Controllers, 2 Paddles and cable HDMI to connect to TV. Just pay attention not to leave paddles connected when you are not using them as the controllers will not respond. I recommend changing TV settings for brightness, since new TVs high definition makes games excessive colors tiring for the eyes, specially Space Invaders bright colors over the dark background. Overall I'm very satisfied, great value and I'm having lots of fun and nostalgia with this Atari Flashback.

I'm very happy with my product and my son is enjoying his new Atari flash back 8 gold . Me and my son love playing . Thanks atgames.

This is a really great game console. It has all of my favorite 2600 games and I bought the companion book "Atari Flashback: Essential Companion" to go with it which is really a must unless you have all the game options memorized from back in the day. This set has paddles too which is great so you can play a broader set of games. My biggest recommendation is that you really should use this with a gaming video monitor or maybe with a low latency game mode on your tv otherwise you may see lag with some games. I personally have an ASUS Gaming monitor with HDMI input and there is no latency or lag between control input and what you see on the screen.

I loved the 2600 as a kid, and this is very nostalgic. No Pac Man or Ms. Pac man, but other than that, a total trip down memory lane. I know other folks had problems with these systems, which is a real bummer, but mine works just fine, at least so far! My husband originally bought me the Flashback 7 at Urban Outfitters, but when we opened it on Christmas morning, there was only one joystick, so we went ahead and ordered this newer model from Amazon. As many others have said, the joysticks won't work properly if the paddles are connected to the unit. Another hint: my TV wouldn't recognize it at first, so I disconnected the paddles, and then it found it just fine. So if you're having trouble with the hook up, make sure the paddles aren't connected. Overall, a total hoot and real nostalgia trip.
