I have 3 4K setup at home. I had bought the X800 from Costco for the family room setup. I was looking for a player for the basement home theater. I read the reviews and the price was just right. I have paired this with a Optoma UHD60 4K projector, Sony STR-DH770 7.2 receiver and a 100" Silver Ticket screen. The setup was simple. Once I connected to the wireless network everything else was a breeze. I like how the player can optimize the picture for the specific setup (TV, Projector), screen size etc. Once I completed the setup, I watched oodles of 4K and Dolby videos from YouTube! The audio & video performance was awesome! Then I watched 4K DVDs (Samsara, Jurassic World, Planet Earth, Journey into Space) and it was great! This is a no frill 4K DVD player that meets my needs and beats my expectations. Highly recommended.

Technology is a interesting thing. My first Blu-Ray player was a Sony BDP-s550. Built like a battleship. I moved from that to an Oppo BDP-93. Again, a battleship. Both were great players but time passed them by. As we enter the end of the physical media journey, it didn’t make sense to buy another piece of expensive equipment. Which brings me to the point... I bought the Sony XBP-x700 for $149 delivered. Compared to my previous players it seems flimsy and poorly made. No bells and whistles on this thing...BUT...it does the job, and does it quite well. Hopefully it’ll last long enough to become obsolete, and I can stack it in the pile with everything else that has outlived it’s technical usefulness.

I can't believe that a player in this price range can look and sound so great. It does Dolby Atmos, Dolby Vision, UHD 4K and even streams titles on Netflix and Amazon in 4K. It can stream Dolby Vision on some titles. I watched Avengers Infinity War 4K Dolby Vision and Atmos last night as my first movie on it. OMG. The picture and sound is just stunning. Mind seriously blown. I had an older OPPO DVD player but it didn't play Blu Ray much less Blu Ray 4K. There are a few tweeks you have to do in the Settings menu and a Software update. I'm using a really fast internet connect (300Mbps) and running this over WIFI and it is just flawless. No one hiccup. Just amazing. Atmos thru my Pioneer VSX 933 and 5.1.2 Atmos speaker setup is crazy great!! I can't recommend this player enough. For both Blu Ray 4K and Streaming it is just the best. I know some have said that it seems flimsy I do not find this to be the case. It's a smaller footprint than most players and it doesn't have a front panel display, but how cares? The onscreen menus are very straightforward and very easy to navigate. This player is awesome!!!

Plays 4k Blu Ray videos and streaming services. So, if you have Vudu, Netflix, Hulu or Amazon Prime, you can watch their 4k content though the player. The automated setup was very easy. It detected the network connection and downloaded its update right away. The included instructions are very basic, but do the job. Overall, I am very happy with this player.

Easy setup and works great. I have noticed the 4K UHD discs need to be perfectly clean or it will skip and freeze up. So I clean disc each time before I put it in and no issues.

So far I have played 4k movies and blue ray movies with no problems. I originally noticed that blue ray movies were a little more blurry that my other blue ray players. Then I went into the setup. I selected Setup > Screen Settings > Output Video Resolution, to 4k instead of Auto and then the blue ray movie was as sharp as my other blue ray players. I would point out that going from blue ray to 4k is not a big change in clarity/detail. What it does is improve the color. I am not say the greens are greener or that the blues are bluer, it just makes the colors correct. An analogy is 4k is like looking out a clear window or no window at while a blue ray is like looking out a dirty window. I came to this conclusion by watching a 4k movie and wondering what the big deal was. Then I watched parts of the same movie on the blue ray that came with the 4k movie. I noticed in some scenes the color did not look right and was less realistic.

Sony seems to be negligent in providing Dolby Vision capability across its line of disc players. At the moment I write this, this is their only model. Dolby Vision is simply amazing. It expands the dynamic range of video to a point where it is almost like looking at an actual scene. The more common HDR10, while attempting to do the same thing, appears rather artificial in most cases. Hopefully, like Blu-ray over HD-DVD, DV will become the standard in enhancement technology. The player is great. The user interface and remote are very simple and straightforward. It plays many different formats of streaming media and discs. There are a relatively small number of apps for some of the popular services such as VUDU, Netflix, YouTube and Amazon Prime. It isn't fancy and maybe a bit light and fragile, but it works perfectly. It seems like a great value for a relatively low price. This isn't mentioned often, so I will tack it onto my review. There is an app called Video & TV SideView that works with this player. It even has a voice control plugin. Well worth picking up.

Can’t go wrong here. It just does what they say it does. The separate audio output is genius. If you’re not investing in an Atmos sound system just yet, and who is? the separate HDMI port lets you connect to your existing audio. Controls are simple and if your smart tv is up to the task, and whose isn’t? you can control some functions through the TV remote. PS. Make sure you’re buying the x-700, the 800 is the older model and does not have the Dolby Vision upgrade (over the internet) and the built in WiFi is a big plus.

A lot of the reviews state an issue with player “freezing” up. I’ve never had an issue with it. Read the reviews a few hours after purchasing...my fault for not reading before. After reading the reviews I thought it was an issue with doing the update out of the box.... Yeah I didn’t the update and haven’t had any issues. If you have already done the update try reverting back to the factory settings. Picture quality is great!! Viewing on a Sony Bravia 65 A1E OLED.
