I just finish assembling this book shelf. It went together in one (1) very easy hour and exactly as per the directions, which were clear, and easy to follow. It is made of particle board (compressed wood chips) as expected, is heavy at 60 pounds,but it does look good, and the shelves have a added front edge piece which makes the shelves very rigid. I bought it for 11-1/2" tall photo albums and have set the 2nd shelf to clear 12-1/4" high from the bottom shelf, the third shelf to clear 11-3/4" from the second shelf, and with 10-3/4" clear to the bottom of the top shelf moulding. The screws attaching the top were 1-1/16" long and of just the correct length. I agree that the back (just vinyl coated press board) would be better folded horizontally to better hide the folds behind the shelves, although I suspect it is folded vertically to better match the width of the shelves for shipping purposes. I would definitely buy this again and any similar Sauder product.

Deceptively rich-looking but without the price tag!

Sauder has come a long way from their early beginnings. I believe that they are continuing to improve their quality of affordable furniture that looks like you spent WAY more than you really did! Not to mention their customer service was top notch. We bought 2 and everything arrived in pristine condition. Note: Put your shelves in VERY carefully. It's a very tight fight and we scratched the thin veneer on one of them. My husband put together the 2nd one and managed to crack one of the front vertical facing pieces. It's just MDF but he called up Sauder and explained what happened and they shipped us out a replacement part within the week. They look gorgeous in our home!

A Very Pleased Customer

I could not be more pleased with this purchase. I am a 70-year-old woman with no experience in putting anything together, and I had some reservations about what I was getting into. The directions were easy to follow and fairly easy to execute. I really, really appreciated the humor in the directions; more manufacturers should use that trick to make a not-hugely-fun project a lot more enjoyable. The "sliding" technique for attaching the trim is genius. It would help, however, if the manufacturer suggested some kind of lubricant to apply to the sliding mechanism, as I ended up having to use a hammer to pound the trim pieces from the end as "slide" is a misnomer for "push very, very hard." But that was an easy problem to solve. The shipment also arrived several days earlier than promised. The assembled piece is perfect for what I wanted.

Looks very nice in the family room

Bought two of these and love them. The packing is ok, so whether they get damaged before getting to you really depends on how they are handled during shipping. I could see how it may be easy to be damaged. That is the main reason I waited to get them when they were sold and shipped by Amazon. I knew if there was a problem it would be no issue. Luckily they were undamaged and quite nice. Did not take my husband very long to put together and everything fit well, not all boards were marked but it is easy enough to figure out using the pictures in the instructions which thank goodness he followed as it would have been easy to put things together with certain pieces backwards. I have the shelved filled with hard back books and there seems to be no issue with the weight of them. I actually just ordered a third to put in another room.

Good looking book cases and easy to put together. I have a lot of heavy books and the shelves are extremely sturdy. They've added a front piece on the shelves that prevents sagging which was a problem with earlier Sauder bookshelves.

Fantastic Quality and Unbeatable Price / Easy to Assemble

Ok ladies, follow the perfectly detailed and diagramed instructions (and I know you will) and you will have a beautiful piece of furniture at an unbelievable price (that's what I did, don't leave it to the guys). Assembled in less than 2 hours, and I really took my time. All you need is a hammer and a screwdriver I'd give it 10 stars if the rating went higher. Rock solid, doesn't look like the cheep veneer you see in retail outlets at more than the cost for less than 1/2 the quality. I have absolutely no complaints. I am an avid book reader, and proud to place my books within this piece. Excellent size for small apartment living. I had none of the experiences that anyone who gave it less than 5 stars did. This bookshelf will be with me for a long time, and it undoubtedly will last. The color I selected went perfect with my bedroom and living room furniture. Blends in and looks like a top of the line piece. Exceptionally well priced. Having tackled the 3 shelf, I'm now moving on to the 5 shelf Sauder bookcase as well. Which just arrived in record breaking time. Also ordered elsewhere Sauder dresser for my college daughter's summer stay. Sauder furniture is always well priced for the corresponding quality of items they manufacture. Thank you Amazon. You can't go wrong with this purchase. PS: Extremely well packaged to prevent damage during transit.

Smartly designed piece of furniture

I’ve put together my fair share of this type of furniture and I was pleasantly surprised with this piece of furniture. Sauder has truly come a long way. The construction of this piece is smart, slick and easy for anybody to put together. All the pieces line up exactly as promised. The instructions are very clear and easy to follow (and, dare I say, even entertaining at times?: “Lift with your legs. And, you know, your arms”). The product was packaged carefully to prevent damage to any of the pieces (an extra layer of fiber board plus plastic wrap on the outside of the box). And on top of all that the finished product is about the best you can get for a construct-at-home veneered-particle-board furniture (we’re talking Sauder here, not Stickley, people... can we have realistic expectations, please?). I highly recommend this product!

As advertised, it holds my stuff.

Nice shelf, sturdy and easy to put together. Holds my stuff. I only thing I want to put out there that the cherry color is more on the redish side than orange, it really doesn't matter unless you're trying to match other furniture perfectly (and with cherry wood colors, it's almost impossible).

Great for holding media items

To clarify, I primarily use this bookshelf for media storage and to hold some of my media-based merchandise or decorative items, such as figurines and plushies and video game controllers/chargers. However, the bottom shelving is currently being used to hold thick, hardback textbooks and novels. This shelf is really good for holding more decorative or media items. I mainly use this, as stated before, to hold my video game cases/DVDs/CDs and some related merchandise, and it works very well for this. The shelves have about a half inch wall on the top two shelves, as in items will not just slide off if you were, for example, to put a ball in there. It’s also deep enough that it very comfortably allows for two rows of DVD/video game cases to sit in front of each other where it fits snug but isn’t too tight to retrieve items. I’ve had this shelf for a few months now, and none of the paint nor finishing has any marks or looks worn. It still looks very beautiful. I do have heavy books on the bottom shelf, and it supports the weight well. I have had heavy books resting on the other shelves for a few weeks before moving them in favor of my game cases, and I haven’t had the weight morphing problem I’ve seen others complain. But then again, I primarily do not keep books on the shelves, I use a different shelf and like this bookshelf more for holding my decorative and media items due to that small shelf wall and how deep the shelf goes. Overall I’m very pleased with the shelf, and I’d buy another one if I ever need a second shelf for my games and movies.

But seriously, $99 for this is a great price. Instructions are great. Just a screw driver and small hammer is needed. Build quality is better than you could possibly expect for this price. Compressed wood with quality laminate. You will be happy with this. Just be careful mailing the backing on. You need to make sure that it is square and that you hammer carefully. There are no nail guides on the back and you can possibly "miss" and chip the wood. Take your time nailing all of those small nails.
