I haven’t sewn much since I was in high school so I was nervous about using it for the first time. The book was easy to follow and I was able to mount the embroidery parts in a few minutes. I was concerned I wouldn’t be able to follow how to thread the upper spool, but then I noticed the steps were marked on the machine...lol... The self threading option is awesome! It took me a couple of tries to understand how it worked, but then it was smooth sailing! I made one of the preprogrammed designs today. It turned out so good I wished I hadn’t put it on a spare bandana. It was the first thing I made using the machine. The thread my bundle came with is *really* nice and there are so many colors. I also like the already threaded bobbins so I could get started right away. I found a free trial for a program called SewArt it’s much more user friendly than the Brother software (I work in software engineering and had a hard time with it). I’m likely going to buy a license for SewArt and will try my own custom designs with its generated PES files. This is a great machine to start with for a home-based personalization business before graduating to something more commercial (that’s why I bought it). The butterfly took about 10 minutes, but is gorgeous. The pic doesn’t do it justice. I might purchase another one for my mom (who helps me with the business) because it was so easy to startup. BTW, don’t remove the plug for the foot pedal or it will shut off (amateaur mistake on my part), but it did just continue once I plugged it back in.

Before i review the product i want to offer a tip that tripped me up when i first unboxed the machine. Basically, If something doesn't appear to be working it might only work when the machine is powered on. This sounds like a stupid tip but allow me to explain. The first thing i encountered was the knee lifter. I thought it was a mechanical action but its electronic and only works when the machine is powered on. Second is threading. The machine must be powered on to thread it. none of my previous embroidery machine had to be turned on to thread so that tripped me up for a little bit. Another good tip is to keep the box that the embroidery carriage came it. Not only will it securely protect and store the carriage but the foam inside of it has been made so that it can hold 1 of each of the four hoop sizes. I thought that was really clever and very useful. If you only need an embroidery machine save a little money and buy the PE770. It is very similar in ability and use. But if you need sewing and embroidery this is definitely the machine to buy. At least in my opinion. I originally bought an se625 (mechanically identical to the se600). That machine was good but the problem is that the 4x4 embroidery size is just small enough to be frustrating. In fact i think they deliberately picked the 4x4 size to make people want to buy larger machines. On the other hand. the 5x7 size of this machine is pretty much perfect. Big enough to do just about anything the average enthusiast might want. Having purchased two brother machines i have some perspective. They are so similar in some ways but in others completely different. The automatic needle thread actually work differently on both machines. In my opinion it works better on the se625 but that may be because i am used to that. One of the nice things about the se1900 is the specially molded tray that holds many of the accessories and keeps them organized. Also, the se1900 embroiders at a significantly higher speed than the se625. Be careful about this because if your feeding an external spool and it snags your needle can break before you even notice a problem. That happened to me on the first pattern. My only complaint so far is the screen size. Its not bad but it bothers me because the screen on the se625 is slightly larger. I would have thought the larger more expensive machine would have at least as big if not slightly bigger display.

I haven't used this very long but it appears to be EXACTLY what I wanted. I only have one complaint but that's only because I have an upgraded one of these machines also. I miss the automatic pressure foot button that's on my 4000D but I will adjust, just wish the lift was in the front!

Granted I just received this machine yesterday, I already love it. I was able to unpack, setup, and start a quick test project within an hour. I had one snarl with the thread, but figured out it was my fault because the thread wrapped behind the keeper and I didn't notice quick enough. The test bit came out beautifully and my daughter is already asking what else can make. Excited to do more things.
