Never thought I would be so excited about a kitchen tool, but I really needed an accurate instant read thermometer, and this one is the best. This one so fast and easy I use it all the time now. I've had the so-called instant read thermometers from the grocery, and they are horrible. For only a few dollars more BUY THIS! If you ever doubt the accuracy, boil water and test it. At sea level distilled water boils at 212 degrees. Stated accuracy is +/- .9 degrees. Mine was exactly that! The 4 second response time means you don't have to hold your hand over a hot pot while a temp rises, or let all the heat out of your oven when checking meat. A friend liked it so much I'm ordering one for her as a gift. If you've read this far, stop waffling and just get it! You won't find a better or more useful thermometer. You don't really need min/max hold or beeps or buttons, and you don't need to spend double, triple, or more for a longer probe, rotating display, or backlight. This is definitely a best-buy!

I’ve had no issues. I have seen other reviews that state it stopped working shortly after first use. From looking at the thermometer it is cheaply made. That said it will last good, but it takes more care. When washing I never get water too close to the plastic. Hot soapy rag to wipe only the metal probe. Then a hot damp rag to wipe off the soap. Then dry cloth to dry. Through all this I hold the thermometer with the probe faceing down to prevent drips into the plastic. It can probably handle a little water, but I don’t take the chance. To me it’s worth the money.

Just got it - used only once so far, but it REALLY impressed me. I have been waiting to buy one of those $100 thermapens, but never could convince myself it would really be worth that huge price. Saw this one and thought the price was a steal if they were claiming it worked just as fast. When I first got it, I was skeptical since it did not seem to read fast or accurate from my skin or mouth, but we cooked a ham that night, and all I can say is that it read almost instantly! I have another digital probe that took a full minute to finally settle on the temp, and this one showed the temp before I could even think about counting the seconds to check its speed. I have not yet tried to double-check the calibration, but I will certainly update this review if I find it off or any other problem develops. Perhaps the probe could be a bit longer, but it will work for anything I am likely to fit in my oven (and it is as long as my other thermometer). As long as it keeps working, I don't know how it could be anything less than 5 stars. The great price alone will offset any minor concern I may have about the probe length.

I have always been reluctant of cooking meat because I am afraid of undercooking it and in turn usually end up overcooking it. Before, I considered myself a terrible cook, but since I bought this my chicken and fish comes out perfect every time and I am no longer throwing away food after it’s done. The temperature read is instant which is extremely convenient. I previously had a thermometer that was not instant and it was useless and difficult to use compared to this one. This thermometer also has a magnet and I just leave it on the front of the oven so it’s always there when I need it. My boyfriend loved it so much after using it at my place a few times that he ditched his old digital thermometer and bought one of these instead. I can’t believe I didn’t buy one sooner. I can finally cook!

This thing is great. Instant read means instant read, and comparing it to other thermometers that I own/use it seems to be spot-on in terms of calibration. We use it a lot and love it. If you smoke meats or grill consistently this is a must-have piece of equipment. UPDATE: After almost a year of pretty consistent use, this thing stopped working. I changed the battery assuming that would fix it, and nothing. And honestly I was kind of bummed because I like it, and I use it a lot. I was about to start researching to find a new one and decided to email Lavatools. I was very, very pleased when they responded within 24 hours, provided a return shipping label, and replaced my thermometer in about a week. Sucks that it died but their customer service was TOP NOTCH.

This digital thermometer is comparable to models costing a lot more. I had a Thermapen that was given to me as a gift, and this Lavatools matches it in performance, and even exceeds it in some features. It has just about everything: easy to ready, super easy to operate, it's even dishwasher safe. It's also magnetic, so I keep mine stuck to the dishwasher (yeah, sounds weird, but that's the most convenient location for me, near the range/oven, my toaster oven, the bread machine, and the microwave). It turns itself on when you open out the probe; turns itself off when you return it to the original position. And if you forget and leave it out, it will shut off automatically after 60 minutes (I just tested this -- it works). If that happens, you'll need to return the probe to the original position, then open it out again to use it. Not a problem. The display is large, too -- very easy to read, although not backlit. I tried this out on grilled chicken, baked short ribs, boiling water, and water that has to be at a specific temperature (105 degrees F) for bread making. It reads very quickly on everything but the lower-temperature water. It took less than 5 seconds for the higher-temp items; about 25-30 seconds for the lower temp water. Overall, I'm very happy with my unit. The size, the feel, the design -- this one has some extras that you won't find on more expensive models, so for the price, it's a very good value. Highly recommended!

**Update** I have had this for a few months and it works great. I like the magnet feature that allows me to just stick it to my stove. I have also had the chance to test the waterproofing (the reason I chose this one) and so far it works fine. It's survived a few washes, and the deadly dip that killed my last thermometer. **Original** So far it works exactly as advertised. I haven't exactly put the "water proofing" through the ringer, but it does read a fair amount faster than the last "instant read" temperature probe I had, and I thought that read pretty quickly.

My wife and I would always cook chicken and other meats and guesstimate the internal temperature because we didn't have a thermometer. This always resulted in dry/tough meat. This thermometer is accurate and has changed the way we cook. Meat actually tastes good now! This is a handy, durable tool that we love. Our friends recommended this to us and we are glad they did. Pros: - Compact and easy to use - Easy to clean (I just run a Clorox wipe down the metal end) - Numbers are easy to read - Accurate readings - Magnetic: This is actually a lot more handy than I ever anticipated or expected. We actually keep the thermometer on the refrigerator as a magnet. Also, while I am grilling, I have the thermometer magnetically stuck on the grill. This a minor, genius touch by the good folks at Lavatools Cons: - If you're using this thermometer for grilling, you might need an oven mitt or glove to check the temperature of the meat. Because this thermometer is so short, it can get pretty warm (actually extremely hot) when you attempt to take the meat's temperature. There are, however, no actual cons as far as the capability and functionality of this unit goes. It is top-notch.

I already have a thermapen but needed a second thermometer and didn't really want to spend too much on it. I first tried the thermopro tp18 but it felt so cheap and was very inaccurate. Returned that and purchased Lavatools PT12. First thought when unboxing was it felt solid. The prob slides out very smoothly. I tested ice water and boiling water side by side with my thermoworks thermapen and it was just as accurate. Read time was just a bit slower but can't complain for something that is 1/4 the cost. We use it in the bathroom to check water temerature for baby's bathtime and it has held up well for the past month getting splashed on and being handled with wet hands. (We make sure to dry it as soon as possible.) I'll definitely consider javelin next time I need another thermometer.
