A must have.
We had thousands of family photos in albums and no place to keep them after we downsized from a 4 bedroom house to an apartment. Scanning all those photos seemed like a daunting impossible task. Finding this unit at a reasonable price seemed, well, unreasonable. This refurbished model came clean in like new condition. I set it up and got scanning in no time at all. I have scanned over a thousand photos so far and the only problems have been on me as I want to overload the input feeder. (You can carefully add a stack of photos 'on-the-fly' but start with too large a stack and the scanner will say, "nuh uh". There is a setting for thicker papers and the scanner can be configured to scan both sides of the photos so if you have writing on the back you need to capture it will. I was able to scan post-card,s both sides, in a few seconds And that just it. This thing flys! Even if you are capturing both sides it runs through a stack of 40 pics in less than half a minute! On the down side this is a pricey machine. And the easy to use scanning software constantly reminds you to keep it clean. But it does its 'job well and yes, you need to do moderate maintenance to keep it going. Defiantely an A+++ purchase!

fast
It is really fast. The processing time for the image is about twice as long as the scan time, so not quite as productive as you think. It didn't scan Polaroid photos, but each one jammed because they are too stiff. Also, it has a problem with some photos that were too slippery. The trick is to just load a few at a time if they are slippery, then hit "scan" again. Old bent up photos need to be straightened first or scanned one at a time. The scanning technology is a little more susceptible to smears. The cleaning depends on your own tolerance level for smears. I did it every 100 photos, or every batch of 20 or so photos if they were especially old and dusty.

Fantastic photo scanner. You wont believe how fast it is
Bought this so we could scan in 8000+ photos from boxes while recovering from knee surgery. It was easy to set up, very reliable, and so blazingly fast. I doubt we had 10 double-feeds out of all the photos scanned. Scan quality was great. Software was OK on Windows 10 laptops and also on a Windows 7 desktop. Check out a video of this great scanner in action. Wow!

Fast Photo Scanning
We inherited photos from my parents, a grandmother, and a grand uncle. We want to scan these photos along with all our pre-digital photo prints. We have thousands of photo prints to scan. Printer setup was very easy. It was ready to go within 30 minutes of unboxing. I scanned a few batches of 4x6 and 5x7 photos. These scanned very quickly at about one photo/second. I decided I wanted higher resolution scans and switched from 300 to 600 dpi. Scans took about 3 seconds each. This is still many times faster than I could scan on a flat bed scanner. Scan results are very good. I turned on all of the enhancement and restoration settings. In some cases, the results were excellent. In others, the scanner and software made unacceptable changes. I set the option to save an original copy plus the enhanced copy. This gave opportunity to chooses which to keep. The software suggests cleaning the scanner and provides instructions and a video to help with the process. The manual suggests cleaning after scanning 500 photos. I plan to clean rollers and scanner glass after each use. This will help prevent lines and streaks in scanned images. It should also prevent sticky build-up on rollers that might cause jams. The scanner user guide also recommends wiping off photos before scanning which is a good idea regardless of the scanner used. So far, I love this scanner and highly recommend it or the newer FF-680.

Fantastic product, makes a daunting task seem manageable.
I ordered this photo scanner to digitize the enormous pile of family pictures that we need to preserve. 1400 frames in, I'm quite satisfied with the hardware and software. My only slight reservation is that on the 300 dpi resolution, it moves the photos through it so quickly I'm afraid it might damage them. As hard drive space is cheap, I'm now scanning everything in 600 DPI anyway, and while slower, the scanner still moves the pictures through far faster than I can organize them. My family is astonished at how fast I'm able to work through the material, and I suspect I will be using this for many years in the future. While this is refurbished, I see no indication that it's anything other than new. Highly recommended, if you're looking for a way to get a fantastic photo scanner and save a few dollars this is definitely the way to do it.

Why didn't I buy this sooner!!!!
Over two years I scanned about a thousand pictures using a flatbed. This scanner did the same (maybe better) in under two weeks! I wish this would have been available earlier! Photos come out enhanced and with good resolution. The only thing is doesn't do (the accompanying software) is to geo tag the photos (it does ad a timestamp you provide). Also keeps everything organized. The only downside I've experienced is the unit doesn't like to get hot. It has a fan that kicks on, but if you leave it running all day (like I've done) towards the end of the day it starts having trouble resulting in stretched or smooshed scans. Letting it cool off has always corrected the problem. Probably wasn't designed to run for 8 hours straight. Totally worth the price for what it does.

It's the Berries
Getting the refurbished product saved over $150 just for starts. Except for being in a plain box rather than a fancily decorated one, I really can't tell that it isn't new. Was well packed with all the instructions and power supply & cords that would come with a new product. I've only been using it for a few hours, so I will revise this posting should any defects appear. In the few hours since turning it on, I scanned nearly 200 photos in a matter of minutes and am delighted with the results. I have over 20,000 photos to do & can now spend my time editing rather than plodding along one by one on my flat-bed scanner. Still have to print out the user guide and try some of the other features. So far I'm delighted with this equipment. A few days after receiving the scanner and running over 1000 pictures through it, I've had reinforced what my mother kept telling me. . .that cleanliness is next to Godliness. Running straight out of the box, I found streaky vertical lines on every scan. Figured out that some dust or dirt was stuck on the scanning head and was blocking the light, causing the streaks. Cleaning the heads with a paper towel dampened with a squirt of windex solved that problem. I re-ran the streaked photos, and voila, no more streaks. There is also an anti-streak setting which I checked off on the settings menu. I'm wary of using windex all the time, so found a little air blower works quite well --- do a search on "world's smallest blower". I started using that prior to each load of photos, and it works quite well without the danger of scratching or messing up the glass scanner head. Yes, I found it's possible to run most polaroids by loading them sideways so the thin picture is grabbed by the rollers and not the thicker ends.Best to put the lever on the left up to the thicker setting for this. Remember to put it back down before running regular pix, or you will begin to feed a few at a time and get jams.' Update after using for a few weeks and 8000+ photos: I'm finding that dust on the scan head the biggest headache - after dusting with each batch, I discovered that I had less problems using the scan head in the cover than the one on the body of the machine. Using the standard default FastFoto software and setting it to scan both sides, I began loading the pictures face up instead of face down, and virtually eliminated my dust streaking problem. It scans perfectly and will then scan the back only if there is writing on it. In my case, dust seems to settle only on the machine mounted scan head and not the one in the cover. Another discovery --- if you have feeding problems roll the pictures so the middle is a bit convex and makes good contact with the back of the feeder. The feeder picks up from the middle of the picture, so if it is curled toward you instead of the back of the feeder, then the rollers will not pick it up properly and will cause a misfeed. Since I've been curling pictures away from me, I've had no more misfeeds.

Better than using a scanning service
While the initial unit Amazon sent was faulty (see original review below), the replacement is fantastic. I can now scan thick stacks of photos without issue, scans appear dust free, photos are scratch free, and the scan quality and auto enhancements (like color correction, brightness, etc) are excellent. If you have a ton of photos to scan, this is the device for you. Some usage tips: - if Device jams, perhaps the photos are sticking to each other. For me, this happened with static electricity. Try separating and cleaning the photos - worst case, scan individually. - make sure the image faces down when scanning ORIGINAL REVIEW (Before replacement) Scans 1 or 2 photos (all 4x6) before jamming and scratching the photos. Scans paper just fine. Tried small batches, large batches, cleaning photos, rollers, scan glass, rebooting, vertical, horizontal, front, back, and more. Spoke with Amazon and then Epson who confirmed this is a hardware issue. I've submitted for an exact replacement in hopes that not all of these refurbished units are defective. I'll know more after I receive the replacement. The good: Software auto-enhancement is pretty neat - the photos I was able to scan were brighter and color corrected. When/if working, this machine should save me a lot of time.

Pay attention to instructions and you will be well satisfied.
I bought this photo scanner a little over a month ago. I am always skeptical of refurbished equipment but I have had good luck with Epson in the past so I decided to take a chance. I could not be more happy. The unit arrived in a plain box complete, looking brand new. If this is a refurbished unit, you could fool me because it looked brand new with everything intact. I had read many of the reviews especially the negative ones, I like to think I learned from their mistakes when it comes to cleaning. Since I have had the unit I have scanned 3500 photos. Carefully cleaning according to the instructions every and prior to each use. The scans have been excellent, fast, and problem free. When the unit does not complete the scan it was usually an unusual size photo, or a photo from the photo album that has sticky substance on the back following removal. Dust is clearly the enemy in this project. Very Satisfied and recommend highly. Love the two sided scan feature. Pay attention to cleaning for optimal results.
