Love it.
I've had my share of aggravation with printers and multi-function machines -- the latest was a Canon Maxify printer that printed beautifully when directly wired, but refused to be recognized by my wifi network no matter what I did. This Brother unit practically installed itself. Every device I own recognized it immediately on the wifi network before I had even finished the installation process. Printing and copying are great. (Haven't tried the fax yet.) My one complaint is the extortionate price of ink, but that's a reality these days -- I totally get that all of these printer companies practically give you the printer because what they're really selling is ink. Brother does have an automatic ink replacement program that cuts the price a little bit (not nearly enough). I'm hoping for more substantial price reductions as more knockoff ink cartridges come on the market (at least 2 are available already). But the unit itself is great -- best I've used in quite awhile.

Perfect For Home Office
There have been many complaints regarding the Brother MFC-J985 in this review section. However, this section is for reviewing the Brother MFC-J995DW, a much improved printer. The only concern I have is about using the NFC feature for printing from my mobile phone. It's not necessary. When I get to the print screen on my phone I have the option of pressing a button to print. There's no need to hold the phone up against the NFC point on the front of the printer. I have tested the rest of the features on this printer and each has worked perfectly. I highly recommend it for home office use.

Better than expected. Built solid.
I bought this to replace 2 HP Printers than was using HP Ink service. This printer should pay for itself in less than 6 months. It claims a year of ink but even if it lasts only 6 months we'll still come out ahead. The printer connected easily to our network. I was able to print from all of our iOS devices out of the box. No drivers to install. Windows PCs I had to download a 500+megabyte file on each one of them. That was kind of a pain but now that it is set up, I really like it. Much faster than the HPs and having an ink monitor on each PC is nice. The rear single sheet feeder is a little touchy with our labels. It likes to misfeed and give us an error about a third of the time but that is minor. You just readjust and press OK. Love the automatic 2-sided printing and the auto sheet feeder for copying. Feels pretty solid. Much heavier than our HP printers. Looks more professional. I'd definitely buy it again.

Worth all the hours I spent searching for a new printer, good on ink, and problem-free
So my printer died and I wanted something that didn't eat up ink like the old one. (Printer ink being the most expensive liquid on the planet, literally). So I started looking at some of these printers that came with ink already in them, or ink packages. Then I would read the reviews. All of them had one star-ratings over 20%. Complaints of hours with tech support to connect to wi-fi, to printing problems, to hardward problems, over and over horror stories. Then I saw the one-star ratings on this printer, also high, but which seemed to be more oriented to being bad right out of the box and then easily being replaced. Have had this printer now for two months. Was easy to setup and connect to wifi, around 40 minutes after opening the box. No printing or feed problems whatsoever. It will be a very long time before I need to purchase more ink. And it was reasonably priced.

Great printer. Small footprint
I have bought Brother multi-function machines for years. In my experience they have very few problems and when they do have one, their technical support has been outstanding. There is no time limit on their telephone support which is almost unheard of. I continue to buy Brother machines because of my experience with their support and the fact that Brother machines are comparable in features to their competitors. So far, this machine has worked well. It is a little louder than my older machine but that is not an issue in my home office. It has all of the features I need in a much smaller size than my previous machines. I have read some people that complain about Brother customer service. I have NEVER had a problem with Brother's customer service and I can't imagine how or why anyone else would.

Well pleased, excellent print quality and easy set-up
Was drawn to Brother printers because I have owned two previously so I began product search at Amazon for Brother printers. As usual, there is way too much to pick from and making a selection is time consuming but HEY! making a selection from your own home without having to visit stores and having a plethora of product reviews to guide you is a blessing (although somewhat mixed). I was a little concerned that any new printer in this age would be more difficult to get going since they all say "wireless" which is a function I don't need and maybe would require some additional software to locate and load to get it going. Far from it!... I knew at purchase that it had USB hook-up capability and it could hardly have been easier. As I went about getting the printer operating I merely opened up my laptop (with WIN 10) and plugged in the USB cable to printer and laptop while plugging in the printer to 110V. While scanning the quick start directions to load the ink and paper I noted the flag on the laptop for "new device" and by the time I had the completed the paper and ink load it was ready to print and become my "default" printer. No other interface with the laptop was required to run the test page. Very pleased with the print quality - sharp and clear and the printing speed was very impressive. Noise level is quite moderate (less than my previous Brother model) and I like the clarity of the small display panel and it's ability to tilt out for easy viewing. The ink cartridges are large and easy to load and look forward to not having much issue with ink maintainance. Little bit of incongruity there with the claims of ink lasting for a year or longer and then on the Brother ink packages is clearly typed that the ink should be used up in 6 months - really, shelf life? I don't make many copies so we shall see but I think this time I will spring for "factory" ink when I need a refill. My last machine and it's predecessor both failed due to problems with the print heads and I always used non-factory brand cartridges - false economy? However the last machine was serviceable for 9 years; we'll see on this new one. Overall impression? - highly favorable and I am well pleased. I will report if I have problems but thus far no issues.

Works great!
I bought this printer because my other one was having issues along with refusing to recognize non-OEM ink cartridges. So far it's been great and I really like that it has duplex printing. Color photos on photo paper look great, though I mostly use it for black & white printing. It prints quickly for my needs, usually I only print 1-7 pages at a time. My girlfriend uses the printer for photos and other colorful prints and is far happier with this printer than our previous two (HP and Epson) due to how long the ink lasts and quality. The only complaint I really have is that the paper tray is smaller than I'd like, but it's not a severe issue. In the future I'll definitely buy printers from Brother as I've had bad experiences with other brands.

Good for a home office
We've had it for a few days, and I'm impressed with the print quality. We got it to replace an Epson Workforce printer that "bricked" on us with an error code that couldn't be cleared. It seems like this machine is higher quality and will be more reliable, even though it has a smaller footprint than our previous printer. I really like the approach to ink that this printer uses. Per the machine, the ink in the box has a capacity to print 2300 pages of black text and 1200 multi-color pages. If that's true, the ink should last us well over a year based on our usage. I researched the ink tank printers from the competitors, but I like this approach better, and Brother's ink is reasonably priced. The printer is also quieter than our previous printer. So far, so good--we really like it. **UPDATE** I think that this may be the best printer I've owned. It's quiet, efficient, reliable. Great print quality. Scanning, copying have been great. I'm working mostly with text, but color printing also has been very good. It seems efficent with ink.

Right Size Right Features
If you are looking for a printer in this price range, get this through your head, there is NO perfect printer. Every printer you will look at will have alot of decent reviews and a ton of bad reviews. Yes, the printer companies make money off of the ink and the technology they give you actually is worth more than you pay for it. Your first thought is to try to find a printer that can accept third party ink. Good luck... Maybe this printer can I dont know. The size of this printer is perfect. It does duplex printing and scanning, reasonable on ink, and I personally love the simple early 2000's looks over the new inventive apple like designs. It is a space saving design in a package that does everything. You dont get massive print trays but you do get a printer that just works great. Over the next months if that changes I will update.

Excellent Printer
Pros: Cheap to operate for an inkjet. I have printed 175 pages so far and only used about 10% of the ink. I like the tank method over the bottle method. Fast, Quiet, and very smooth operation. Many different ways to hook it up: WPS, WPS with PIN, SSID/Password (the method I used), Ethernet, or USB (yes it can be a share printer too, if you do not want it on your network). Brother iPrint and iScan; either on your computer and/or your iPhone. Wonderful, if you get documents that need to be printed now, and your computers are off, just tap on your iPhone anywhere in the house and you have them instantly – Love It! Of course, If on a computer, you can print directly from your programs (Word, Excel, Outlook, etc.) Poster Print, yes it is cool to get giant documents printed out from Word or Excel; but what is really nice is being able to print out giant maps via 4K Jpegs. I can now get giant detailed maps that are razor sharp. This could possibly be better than sliced bread. Print Quality, the sharpness is about 97% of a Laser Printer. Color printing, either plain paper or photo is excellent. Black ink on documents is excellent, deep rich and dark; just a tad better than the laser. By-Pass Feed print for envelopes or photo paper works great, of course you can use the tray for that too. Scanning works very good, and if you need to adjust the quality of the scans you can do that too. This is not my primary scanner, I use a Fujitsu ScanSnap for that. The Brother Scanner can address scanning books, etc. that a ScanSnap cannot do. Cons or Caveats: Windows 10 Install: Turning off (temporally) the Windows 10 Firewall (Private Network) is a requirement if you are installing from the CD. Otherwise it may fail to install OR may not install correctly. If you install over the internet you may also have to turn off your Internet Gateway Firewall to the Net, if installing directly from Brother? Brother telephone support or email support is useless. If you are having problems form day one, then call Amazon directly and “they can” get you connected with Brother support that may resolve your problem. The Brother “ControlCenter4” is for the most part a completely useless program and is seriously out of date. For example: If you attempt to print photos there is a very limited “trimming” capability. It is virtually impossible to complete genuine cropping and/or aspect ratio framing. The standard and free Windows 10 Photo program addresses that problem very easily. Then use the Brother iPrint to print out your photos (at photo quality setting) and it works perfectly. If you have attempted several “installs” and it did not work correctly because you failed to “turn off” the firewall(s), then the Brother uninstall utility that came on the CD may not do its job. You will also have to use Windows Control Panel to uninstall the remaining applicable software assigned to this printer. Next, you will then have to go to Control Panel (again) for your “Printer Listings” and “Remove Device(s)” for all items associated to this printer. You do not have to remove the printer from your Network (it can still be listed as a Network device-with your WiFi is still connected to it). Many Spectrum WiFi Routers do not support WPS or WPS with PIN correctly, that is why I used SSID/Password which has worked perfectly from day one as a Networked Printer. You would use the “WiFi Wizard” on the printers touch screen to do this, very simple. The “Wizard” also presented about 20 WiFi’s in my neighborhood, about 8 more than my iPhone! There is also a Uninstall Utility program from Brother via download for this Printer; However, this printer is NOT listed from the drop down list in that program. Maybe someday Brother will update that program for “this” printer? 4.75 stars - It is good printer IMO. How will it be in 10 years?
