And they do use it to come inside to cool off and then go back outside again

I bought this for my bunnies...their cage is outside on the balcony...but I also wanted them to have the choice of coming inside if it gets too hot for them outside (I live in CA). And they do use it to come inside to cool off and then go back outside again. They come inside and go outside several times a day and this petdoor has made it easy for me to let them decide when they want to do so! =)

Quality door with security lock

The door is the best quality you'll get for the money. I bought one at Home Depot and it was nowhere near this one. Similar price too. I hate that it takes up so much of the entry way. So our door opening was 30" wide. But, with the pet door, we have about 17 1/2". So, it does narrow quite a bit. If you plan on bringing chairs out to the patio, or if there are larger people in your family...this may not be the best option. The doorway narrows quite a bit. In my installation, the door sits in the track. I secured it using 4 supplied screws that went through the existing track on the slider patio. The existing door lock had to be removed so the door would sit flush against the left side of the wall. The lock on the existing door doesn't work with the pet door, so they supply a lock you can install. It's a small lock, but it's better than nothing. I put a few pieces of wood behind the door as extra security. The weather stripping supplied was sufficient. The trick was getting the existing door and pet door FLUSH before mounting it to the frame. The supplied lock is THIN and doesn't have much play. If it's crooked, it's not going to be easy to lock. So, take your time squaring up the pet door and existing slider. Then, when you're sure the lock will be good, you can secure the door to the patio door frame. I'm happy with it, and after buying several, this one beats out all others. Heavy duty, insulated, quality materials.

Happy with this door

Very happy with this door - it snapped right in - my Home is about 30 years old so I think my glass slider was not totally flush but a small adjustment at the top of my slider, which doubled as a security lock, and the weather stripping took care of the problem. Installation recommended I add some screws, I think for security, but as the door exits to an enclosed patio with its own locked exterior door I did not do that . Altogether I am very happy with this door. Attached pictures of the installation, the door, and the security lock/shim that I used. I ordered the medium door for my 11lb cat mostly because I needed bronze and they didn't make small and bronze, but I think it's the perfect size. It took him less than five minutes to figure it out, with the aid of some treats ! If I ever decide to move it will be super simple to remove.

Not sure why others have said this product doesn't fit their sliding door frame but it got mine. I have a 78" frame from top to bottom and with that said it fits fabulous and was easy to install. The door has some cardboard pieces holding it in place at the springs for shipping reasons. (Keep that in mind for when you receive it bc otherwise it may appear to not fit). We bought the medium bc we have 2 mini schnauzers and a chiweenie and they all fit through the door with room to spare.

A Little Tricky to Install, but Makes Life with Dogs Much Easier

I was a little overwhelmed when the box arrives. In order to install this door you need to have a familiarity with an electric drill. A second pair of of hand is also very helpful. The basic installation is pretty straightforward: position the door in the opening, make sure the door is level and straight, and then using the included hardware mount the brackets to the dog door. The kit includes weather stripping a door weep. It took us a little trial and error to get the door to line up correctly with the sliding glass door, so we had to buy some more weather stripping. So if you're not very handy (like me), you'll want reinforcements for this project. It can be difficult to line the door up, make the holes in the right places for the locking pin, etc. But when you're done, the door is fantastic! The door works beautifully with the decor, it is relatively air-tight, and most importantly it makes life with for my Basset Hound a little easier. First, the door itself works well with house. The trim matches perfectly and the glass above the doggy door looks beautiful. I like that the locking pin keeps the sliding glass door secure. The window lets in the light that we loved from the sliding door. The glass door is still functional for the family when we want to use the back yard. We can even still use the screen door if we want fresh air in the house. When the wind is blowing hard and gusting, the door includes a plastic panel that allows you to lock the doggy door (which also keeps the wind out). Getting the door to line up correctly is critical and relatively hard to do. If you can see daylight between the sliding door and the doggy door insert, try to adjust your sliding door, the doggy door, or the weather stripping. After several attempts we did get a very good seal. Finally, and most importantly, this was a critical addition for our hound. I work full time. Sometimes, I am able to get someone to come to the house to let him out, but sometimes I can't. I had always felt a little guilty leaving him in the house all day. But now he's getting older and sometimes has to take Prednisone. The prednisone does wonders for his skin condition, but it makes him have to go to the bathroom every five minutes! It wasn't fair to him to be trapped inside (and the weather here doesn't allow him to be outside...plus he would be unhappy with being banished). So I was shopping on Amazon and found this door. It has made life easier for both me and my Basset. He can go lay in the sun on nice afternoons while I'm at work and go to the bathroom as often as he wants. I can work without trying to duck out early because of the dog. One final note; I got the "Large" door which is perfect for Basset hounds. My brother's corgis also love it. My friend's boxer has to duck a little to get through, but it hasn't slowed him down.

Must buy for any pet owners.

This is really the best option out there if you need a dog door and dont want to destroy your house. Installation is really straight forward and i never even looked at the instructions. Only downside is i wish it was double Payned window instead of single but thats not enough reason to remove a star. Also our chihuahua learned instantly but our maltese took a week to figure it out. Lol

Try it! We should have bought years ago!

We took a shot on this one for our older golden retriever. The only drawback was the training of the dog to use it. In reality, it took only a few days to get him fully autonomous. I think he had figured it out much earlier, but pretended not to do he could keep receiving the treats. He also wouldn't do it on his own for a couple days. He would go to the door and wait to go in our out until we told him. The only negative is the sizing on the larger end. Our dog is about 90 lbs and the door is a bit of a tight fit. For him to get through without banging or dragging the sides, he needs to go very slow. I mean, it works, but even I see if we had gone with the XL door, that unit is only TALLER. I wish they made a size that was just a bit wider. Use the measuring guide and you should be ok. My dog is actually about exactly at or maybe a half inch wider than the width of the L door and it works...but not without a little bit of tightness (which also makes the door get a bit hairy as it works like a brush in his fur when he squeezes through) All in all, we love it. -one caveat: it defintiley cuts down the interaction with your dog. We finally got it because kids are in high school now and with sports and school and activities, we are never sure who is going to be home when. This solved that problem for sure! BUT, on a busy day, the dog coming over and getting your attention to go outside, or barking at the door and coming in happy to see you...that kind of goes away. Now that the dog and the children are all independent, you realize if they don't need something from you, they pretty much ignore you. It does take a way a little bit of relationship time. On the other hand, since this door has gone in and the kids have their drivers license, I get a lot more done around the house. (And by that, I mean, I don't do anything around the house.)

Great Addition to Patio

Perfect for 7 y/o lab. Rather than install lock provided, using a piece of scrap wood to block the track. Purchased additional weatherstripping. But pretty solid overall.

Worth the $

Fits perfect, my husky loves it and makes my life so much easier. No flies or letting the hot air in. Easy install. Was confused at first but the video on their website makes everything super clear if you have any doubts. I did not drill anything, just leaving as is since I plan on taking it out each time I am gone for a while since its that easy to remove and put back.
