Everything in my kitchen is very much a reflection of who I am. I love to cook and I have always seen my kitchen tools as an extension of my style and creativity. So when Dalstrong came out with their new Shadow Black Series, I was totally intrigued. This knife is totally different from the knives in their Shogun, Gladiator and Phantom lines - all lines of which I own and love for their own individual unique quailities. The first thing that you will notice about this Shadow Black Series chef knife compared to Dalstrong’s other knives is the black, non-reflective titanium-nitride coating on the blade. Not only does it give the blade a sleek, upscale and unique (not to mention bada$$) look, but the coating helps protect against blade corrosion, adds strength to the blade itself and enhances the non-stick properties of the knife. Since a chef knife is generally designed to be an all-purpose, multitasking knife created for those who have to chop, mince and dice frequently, these are all important considerations and qualities. The edge of the blade itself, is incredibly sharp, and it allows me to transition easily from dicing and chopping vegetables to cutting through muscle proteins such as beef and chicken with clean slices. Another major and significant difference you will notice is the design of the handle for this knife, which is, in my opinion, what makes this knife so totally unique. The handle geometry, unlike other knives, is not long flat and smooth. It has the most intuitive shaped angles molded into the fiber-resin that give it the most natural feel in your hand. Instead of you hand molding to the flat edges of a regular handle this handle is actually designed to mold around your palm, giving you a firm grasp regardless of the grip style you use. I have small hands, and this knife felt like it was custom designed for me. My husband, whose hands are much larger than mine, also prefers this knife due to the comfort of the handle in his grasp. The handle also has a slight texture of the giving it a nice anti-slip capability. Another thing I like about this handle, unlike traditional wooden handles is that it is nearly impervious to heat, cold and moisture. Like other Dalstrong knives, this knife is designed with full tang and has excellent heft and balance. If you are planning to give this as a gift, you will love the magnetic close sleek black presentation box that this knife comes in. Every bit of attention has been given to make this knife feel like the prize possession of your kitchen. So happy that I gave this beauty a try!

I was not sure about this design when I saw it... I am not a fan of "gimmick" knives that are only there for their shock value.. That is NOT the case of the Shadow Black Series. The blades live up to everything you come to expect from Dalstrong - razor sharp, perfect balance and taper, edge retention even under heavy, professional kitchen use; The grip. That is where this line of knives stands apart. It is almost dangerous how comfortable these handles are to use. I am not kidding when I say I was close to forgetting I even had a knife in my hand. Same pinch grip I always use, just in a design that is simply unmatched where comfort is concerned. And I learned that the black is not just for looks (which I am really starting to love BTW) - but it is a titanium-nitride coating. This prevents corrosion, actually adds to the strength of the blade and adds addition non-stick to the blade as well. So, yeah, I have seen black "just to be black" knives before, and they looked cool - but here you get that look but in a design that has many other benefits as well.

I have a few different Dalstrong knives and am really liking the shadow black series. Its an affordable but high quality knife that feels good in my hand and holds a very sharp edge. Its easy to use and easy to maintain

Let me start by saying that I ordered the shadow black series chef’s knife when it first came out and I liked it so much that I decided to get more of them when they came out. This is a heck of a steak knife. I don’t have any complaints and I know this is the nicest set of steak knives I’ve ever used. Especially if you’ve got a very modern looking dining area, this would probably be the perfect addition to your dinnerware set. I had a couple small quality complaints with some of my new knives but after contacting customer support they told me they are working on fixing the problem and they made things right with me without any trouble. They also told me the problems are due to this being a brand-new product and with some new vendors involved there are some bugs to work out of the system.

I was unsure if I even wanted this knife before I ordered it, while it looked neat, i was worried that it was going to feel cheap and that I would hate the coating, but I got it anyways just to see. The first surprise when I first picked it up was how solid it felt, it’s not a coated knife like you would find at a big box store that has too thin of a blade and too light of a handle, its actually so good. My normal daily drivers are my phantom chef and 3 different shogun chef knives (all Dalstrong knives) ... but now that I have this knife, I will probably all but stop using at least 2 of my others. So, let’s talk about why I like it so much. First off, can we just take a moment to appreciate how unique and modern it looks? I'm sure it's not for everyone but I personally love it. But this knife is far from being all about looks, if you have any other Dalstrong knives already, you can expect this one to be just as good. It's sharp, it’s a nice weight, it’s really easy to clean, and none of your friends have anything that looks like it. The coating on the blade is really nice and slick, and the handle is way more comfortable than it looks, especially if you use a pinch grip. Part of why I'm even writing this review is because I have already seen some negative reviews, and I just don't think that's fair to anybody thinking about buying one. All of the negative reviews that I have seen are about the knife not being sharp out of the box, that was not my experience with this knife or any other Dalstrong knife I have ever bought, but even if it was... if you own knives (especially nice knives like this) chances are that you're either be able to sharpen them yourself or able to take them to somebody else to have them sharpened. Either way, I've never understood the "dull out of box so it must be bad" type of complaint. Anyways, to wrap up, no disrespect to the people upset about not getting a sharp knife in the mail, but I would encourage you to reach out to customer support before hating on the knife, it's a brand-new line so there's bound to be a lemon or two, but customer support will take care of you. It's a fantastic knife and I plan on giving a couple as Christmas presents this year.

This knife has a great feel in my hand which I love. It's very easy to manage and the handle is contoured to be easy to hold. The blade is very sharp and I have had no issues at all cutting most everything. The included instructions for how to care for the knife are very helpful and will help me keep this knife in great condition for many years. I'm already looking at which other knives from this manufacturer I should purchase. Definitely would recommend!

Let me start by saying that I ordered the shadow black series chef’s knife when it first came out and I liked it so much that I decided to get more of them when they came out. This knife is a solid piece, if you like how it looks, I would recommend buying it. It’s more comfortable than it might look and its very sharp. Even though this is such a modern looking knife (I haven’t seen anything like it before), it still works exactly how I would expect any other good, quality, santoku to work. I had a couple small quality complaints with some of my new knives but after contacting customer support they told me they are working on fixing the problem and they made things right with me without any trouble. What an absolute awesome knife all around. Dalstrong always has impressed with quality and this time is no different. The balance as usual is spot on, the blade shape and sharpness are perfect, and the overall design (it’s pretty radical, I almost didn’t want this because the “crazy” design) is actually really great. It fits well in my hand, is easy to grip, and feels solid when I’m using it. Another great Dalstrong knife that is sure to please.

Update: changed to 5 stars Well Dalstrong, your customer support has won me over with a Next Day replacement. This knife was razor sharp and a much better representation of the brand. + 1 Star for the Customer Service. + Star for the quality of the replacement Original: I have been using Dalstrong in my kitchen for the past 3yrs and own several of their product line. I have purchased several the past 6m in particular. I received an email from their VIP team informing me of a new launch, and I jumped to Amazon for a look and purchase at what seemed to be neat piece. I received Friday and got to use it over the weekend. I was disappointed. Pros: great design language, great grip Cos: not nearly sharp enough out of the box. Quite dull. Quality Control? As mentioned, I have been purchasing several of Dalstrong's lineup and I have noticed with my recent purchases that I no longer have been receiving "razor sharp" offering out of the box. In fact, over the months they have been arriving more and more dull. I've always been able to salvage rather quickly with a whetstone but it has made me begin to question their quality control. Perhaps with their rising popularity and increased demand, Quality Control may be slipping With this latest disappointment, I might have to start looking elsewhere. Dalstrong, you make beautiful knives, but please take a look at ensuring your product arrives sharp. First (and 14th) impressions matter.
