Plastic but lightweight and lived through $90 worth of trimming trees at my house ! IMPORTANT NOTE: If you need to replace the chain on this saw, be sure to get the CORRECT REPLACEMENT CHAIN, which (according to email direct from Oregon chain tech support) is the Oregon S33 for the earthwise cvps41008 pole saw (not R34 sold here on amazon). The correct chain has 33 links, not 34. pitch is .325. I doubt the rest of the saw will live through the need to replace the chain, and many people recommend replacing both the bar and the chain together as a set, and if you do that here is the correct number: CS90083 8 in. Replacement Chainsaw Bar and Chain Set. But, so far, I love this little saw, and it is fun to use.

First the bad news .... the instructions that come with this are junk. I feel like I'm somewhat handy but I still got the chain on backwards. It says that " The 8-Inch Oregon Bar is adjustable to 3 cutting angles which allows you to cut high sections of the tree from various positions" .... it does not adjust. Also, the assembled pole saw is a little heavier than you would think .... I'm 66 and it isn't easy holding this above your head for very long. I found it easiest if I lifted it straight up and then lowered it onto a branch. Now the good news .... this baby cut through "2-3" branches like butter. This is a real value at $85 w/free shipping. I know my neighbor will be knocking on my door soon. I wish I had bought this earlier.

I received this saw a few days after ordering. As some reviews have said: the instructions are almost worthless. The pictures are too dark to be helpful, and the explanations leave you scratching your head. Nonetheless, assembly is not impossible. I'm terrible with tools, but I was able to put this thing together successfully with the chain cutting teeth oriented in the correct direction. After assembly, I was filled with apprehension -expecting the thing to explode in my hands, I cringed and powered up. It whirled smoothly. Joy! Satisfied with my accomplishment, I took off trimming my trees and reducing the fallen limbs to smaller segments. Yard work was very pleasing that day. Now, I can't wait till pruning time comes around. Things are going to be a lot easier. Now I got to learn how to prune properly so I can progress from a butcher to an artist! By the way, the kit does not come with the necessary chain lubricating oil. Luckily for me, I had some on hand. So, remember to buy some oil if you don't have any.

Did my winter pruning for two maple trees and six fruit trees. Easy peezy with this thing. I'm fifty nine years young with a back injury. No problem. I switched back and forth from pole to hand held on each tree and it was so easy I fell in love with this little saw. Pros: High quality construction bar and chain are what you would find on a full size chain saw (minus size, of course) Powerful (it never bogged down) Adding bar oil was easy (despite other reviews...just use a syringe) Cons: none so far

I bought this one because it comes off the pole. I have only used it a couple of times as a mini chain saw, but WOW its a wonder indeed. It rips right through those palms and small trees & has saved me a ton of $$ in not having to hire someone. It has already paid for itself. I am a small 58 year old woman so this was perfect for me. The pole is too long for me, but that's what grown sons are for :) Love it.

Got this item on friday 9/26/14 was easy to assemble and was up and runing in 20 minutes. After 30 minutes the adjustment screw for chain tightening had fallen out, so I went to hardware store and got a new 5mm screw. When I reassembled the saw I crushed the last 1/8 inch of threads on new screw so it would not vibrate out, ran saw for about 5 hours over next 2 days. This saw worked better than expected, it needs oil every 20 to 30 minutes but that is no problem. I would highly recommend this product. Randy

I've used it for about 40 hours now, and I would estimate it has saved me about 80 hours of work by extending my reach. I thought the saw blade would get dull rather rapidly as it's small and being on the end of a long pole sometimes it hits the dirt, but I'm still using the original blade after trimming 6 large trees, and removing about 1/4 acre of scrub brush. Great design you can extend the pole easily for things that are far away, move it in closer for medium length cutting and remove it from the pole completely for a regular chain saw. I didn't realize how versatile such a short saw blade could be. It is rather heavy, but as a 67 year old out of shape person I could work for 4 hours straight without any overwhelming fatigue just by cutting at different lengths. I have a rotary cuff problem I'm using physical therapy to treat, and using the saw did not aggravate it at all.

This thing works great! I have a couple of Palm trees that got too tall too fast and trimming was becoming an issue... problem solved. It was packaged well, went together easily (I have had gas chain saws so I am familiar with bar and chain placement). Don't forget to put oil in the bar oil chamber. It is kind of unwieldy when cutting way above my head, but I can handle it much easier from the ground, than reaching with my sawzall while standing tip toe on a ladder. It is my "go to" trimmer now. I use it all around my yard. A very good value..especially if you need to trim a lot of limbs or fronds.

I'd never touched a chainsaw in my life before, but was able to figure out the assembly OK despite the useless instruction manual. The trickiest part was figuring out which direction the chain goes, but there's a diagram subtly embossed in the plastic that tells you the orientation of a typical cutting link. There's also a nearby diagram that tells you the chain turns clockwise. In short: remove the cover (using allen wrench), wrap the chain around the bar, place the bar and chain in the slot, loosen the tension screw (with other end of wrench) so you can wrap the chain around the sprocket, tighten the screw, replace the cover. Once assembled, the pole saw worked great! I love that it easily converts to a handheld. Though the saw is light, once you put it at the end of a 9' pole it is challenging to control; I would not want a heavier or longer item.

Took it out and used it today to trim some branches around the house. Boy was this an improvement from my battery powered pole saw. Last time with the battery powered one it took hours to trim the branches and trimmed the same number of branches in less than 30 minutes. AND I was able to quickly convert the pole saw to a chainsaw and cut the trimmed branches down for moving in minutes. It only takes seconds to switch the system (but you do have to disconnect both ends from the pole to create the chainsaw) The ONLY flaw is that the pole/chain release at the trigger side is on top, with the safety latch on the side - if these were reversed you won't have accidental disconnects BUT I do see where that is safer for the safety latch. I think my muscle memory was thinking about the battery saw which has the safety latch on top. But otherwise I can't find anything to complain about. Don't forget the chain oil.
