A UV sterilizer is not a standard aquarium light. It cannot be used as a replacement for regular lighting. Long-term exposure to UV rays is harmful to aquatic animals and humans. The light is intended for use in a sump, or to sterilize by means where tank inhabitants are not exposed (example: removing the fish, placing the light in the tank, then covering the tank until the UV rays kill the algae and bacteria). The light produced by a company called Roxin. The 11 watt model is approximately 13" long. It has a lightweight construction and aesthetically pleasing blue transparent end caps (although you shouldn't be eyeballing it, for obvious reasons). The cord is of moderate length and features an in-line on/off switch. The quality of the light is like a gentle fluorescent bulb. I could tell instantly it was different than a standard light when I flipped it on and the UVs hit my eyes; definitely heed all warnings about exposure, this is the real deal. This light will be used in a tank with a green algae problem. I will update this review in a few days with pictures once I see the results. I expect, however, that it will work fine. I'm curious about encapsulating the light in drilled out PVC pipe, then mounting it under the HOB's outflow. I have many ideas about how to make this work in a tank without a sump.

Edit: The seller immediately reached out and has sent me the tracking number for the replacement. Awesome seller. Changing my review to 4 stars and if the item checks out I will update to 5 stars. I think it's defective. It doesn't stay on steady. It looks like a fluorescent bulb that is about to go out. Sort of a ripple lighting effect. It's not clearing up my pond. I have it in the waterfall weir so it should be in constant contact with new water. Should have seen an improvement by now. Not happy. Will contact seller and depending on how they handle it, my review may change. UPDATE 5/10/18 Came in yesterday and I installed it right away. This morning I can start to see that it's working. I'm so happy. SELLER JackSupermall

The UV light arrived packaged well with Styrofoam surrounding the light bulb so it wouldn't get damaged during shipping. The box comes with the light, two suction cup attachments, and directions. The UV light comes with a handy on off switch making it easy to turn on and off. The tank I am using it on is a 29 gallon with guppies and ramshorn snails in it. I initially grew algae in this tank on purpose, we'll see how well this light works on controlling decreasing the algae growth by getting rid of the microorganisms the algae feeds on. I do not currently have a stump and I haven't had time to go to Home Depot to get PCV pipe, so I'm going to try the DIY cut box method over my filter that two other people mentioned doing in their reviews. I cut a slit in the box that the UV light came in, just big enough to shine the light into the top of my filter with the filter lid off(this is not going to be the most effective way and I highly recommend either having a stump to put the light in or getting the PCV pipe). I'm going to run the UV light for 4 hours a day. I will update this review a few days after I've tried it to let you know how it's functioning. Notes: -Most important DO NOT directly expose your fish or your eyes to this light when it is on, this light can blind you and your fish and can kill your fish if directly exposed to it. There are several places in the written directions with warnings of this and even a sticker on the box that warns of this. -This is NOT meant to be a constant light in your aquarium. -This is only day 1 of use I will try to update as I use the UV light -I'm including a picture of the aquarium before the UV light -UV Light will work best if it is last in the filtration of the aquarium -The box includes 3 charts: The effect of UV Germicidal Lamp killing familiar bacteria, Mini Ultraviolet Sterilization Lamp, and Germicidal Lamp Sterilization Graph(I uploaded pictures of these charts)

The tank was getting overtaken by algae. After emptying the green water and replacing with filtered water, the algae was back again within 2 weeks. An army of nerite snails won't fix the problem. They can only keep the surfaces clean, but not the water. Our tank is now crystal clear with the UV light. I installed the UV light when the water was green. It doesn't clear up the algae and bacteria over night, but improvement can be seen after a few days. Then before long, it is completely cleared. The length of the UV light isn't a problem for my 15-gallon tank because of the design of my tank. I have my UV light next to my heater, filter and pump which are sectioned off by a black plastic wall (compartment) from the rest of the tank. My fish aren't exposed to the UV light.

First I have to say, I am OCD when it comes to my tanks. If they dont look or run perfect constantly, it drives me insane. One thing I hate is when you do a water change, or a vaccuming and cleaning of a tank, and it makes the beneficial bacteria explode into a bloom causing algea blooms or other water problems, making your water look cloudy or foggy. Sometimes it takes days or even a week or more to clear up, and by that time your doing water changes again, causing the problem to start all over again. So after talking to a few other aquarium hobbyists they suggested a UV light. I ordered this one because it was the first one that popped up on the search. I ordered the 7watt light just to try it out. I am glad I did. The package arrived and the product box was inside and it was a rather sturdy box. Inside was a foam sleeve that was protecting the UV light from damage during shippong and storage. The light itself isnt brittle feeling or cheap feeling. The glass looks thick and the light itself is rather well made in my opinion. I have ordered stuff before and it looks like it was made in someones garage and put on here. This was not the case with this light. The light comes with 2 snuggly fitting suction cups that attatch to the light. The power cord is not thin and is attached so that it shouldnt break from normal use, it also has a decent cord length. There is a rocker button, switch box, closer to the plug end so you do not have to keep unplugging and plugging the light in. Now for the actual use of the light. With these UV lights you MUST KEEP IT FROM DIRECT CONTACT WITH THE FISH it is harmful tonthe fish if they do and may end up killing them. You must put it in a filter, sump or somewhere the fish cannot get to it. There are even ways of putting them in the direct water line, just do a search and you'll see videos and other ways of hiding it. You should only use this 2 to 3 hours at a time, and only every 2 to 3 days or twice a week max. DO NOT RUN IT CONSTANTLY, if you do you may kill your beneficial bacteria in the tank and thats not good thing, because your tank may crash, causing everything to die. This is not a main tank light. I decided to put this UV light in my sump that filters 3x 20 gallon tanks. So roughly 80 gallons of water including the sump. The pictures show the results. The first one shows where I put the light and how cloudy the water was. The second one shows the results of using it twice. I was very pleased how fast it worked, and how crystal clear the water was. I will be using it on my 55 gallon next, just rotating it in and out of my 11 tanks as it is needed. This was one of the better purchases for my tanks that I will be using consistently, as the tanks need it. The overall quality and operation of this UV light was way better then what I expected. Definitely by this one if your lookig for a UV light or a way to make your aquarium water look even clearer.

Do Not Use This Light In Your Main Display! This UV light is strong and will harm if not kill your fish in your main display. So many reviewers on here don't understand that it's not just a blue light, it's a sterilizer from the light you can not see. As soon as I made sure it was not cracked (pretty good shipping box) I turned it on to test outside of my reef tank and can smell a strong ozone smells witch reaffirmed to me that this thing is no joke. It will sanitize the air around it well too. Will use this for about 4-5 days and put it away until I have algae or bacteria bloom again. Will update on longevity in the future.

I got this light with zero expectation. I have a 40-gallon tank with high waste fish (blood parrot, tire track eel, and 2 rope fish) and feed them fresh food such as tilapia and shrimp. My water always good but sometimes after feeding time, it's a little cloudy. I use the box of this light and cut a slit that is big enough for the bulb to shine through my hang in back filter. This way I could run it safely a few hours a day without harming my fish! After using it for about 2 days, I noticed my water is def clearer! Nothing dramatic but I noticed it and so does my son. I tried to capture it in the picture but might not show the difference much. Picture of my tank on the top is before and the bottom one is after using the light. I also attached the picture of how I use it on my HOB filter. I'll wrap the box soon to make it look nicer 😬. I highly recommend it!

Had to turn it off after two days because it worked too well!! I used it on my hang-on-back filter and followed another buyer’s modification by cutting a slit on the box it came with and placing it on top of the uncovered filter. This is a 54 gallon heavily planted and heavily stocked tank running on a canister filter and sponge intakes. The tank is under my covered patio outdoors and only receive natural sunlight. Algae is one of my biggest problems to tackle with the outdoor fish tanks. After receiving this UV aquarium light, I used it for at least 48 hours straight and the tank hasn’t accumulated new algae (because it grows fast on the walls so I scrub often) and the ones on the gravel and plants are turning white because they’re dying back! I turned it off for now because I need the algae for new fish coming in this week. DO NOT EXPOSE THE LIGHT TO FISH OR THEY WILL DIE. Says so in the directions. These are best placed in sump tanks or large filters. It does say submersible, but I haven’t tried that yet. I will if/when I build my sump. This thing does what it says. I’m glad to have read the reviews and the directions!

uV Sterilizer worked as it was intended. Looking at some of these reviews, they either don’t know how to use one, didn’t read the included instructions or a combination of both. You do not use it as a hood light for your aquarium, you do not place it directly in the aquarium, and you don’t run it 24 hours a day, 7 days a week all year long. You’re supposed to build and enclosure or use in a sump tank system for a couple of hours every few days as needed. Direct UV exposure to fish will fill them, running it constantly will kill off all bacteria in your tank, and it’s not good for human eyes either. Proper usage will give positive results. My aquarium is usually pretty clear and taken care of properly to maintain a healthy environment for the fish that I keep. However, when I seen the cost of this product, I decided to order it. The day I placed the order, I began over feeding the fish slightly, leaving the 6500K plant light running extended periods, and skipped two water changes just to cloud the water with free floating algae. Then once the UV Sterilizer arrived, I made a trip to the local hardware store to purchase some PVC tubing, PVC fittings, some PVC cement and a small fountain pump. Assembled the parts as needed to house the UV bulb assembly, attached a hose from the fountain pump to the PVC housing I had made and ran it for three hours. The results were great. Water cleared up and the fish were swimming around being more active than they were previously. Without a doubt, the product does what it’s supposed to do when used correctly. I’ll be picking up a few more of these to use in my fish room once it’s set up again as a weekly preventative maintenance procedure to reduce free floating algae and various bacteria that can cause infections to fish. It helps guard against infections such as ich, various worms, etc. The use of a UV Sterilizer is a much better option than the use of various chemicals that are available on the market. I’m including two photos, one before UV treatment and one after. It’s obvious which photo is before and after. *edited to correct spelling error*

In about a day this sterilizer cleared up the green/white haze that had been a problem in my 29 gal. for months. I do water changes often but have not been able to get really clear water until now. I installed it in the last chamber of my built-in sump which my explain why it cleared things up so fast. All water flows by it at close range. The first pict is "before" and the second is an "after" taken one day later. I'm very happy with this sterilizer and think that is well worth it's inexpensive price. Update: I've been running the sterilizer off and on for about 2 weeks now and it's made a huge difference in clarity. Floating algae and cloudiness is completely gone now.
